So tell me about an external version for breech baby

OP - this was my thought exactly when they told me by babies were breech. I am definitely not a medical professional, but know that c-sections carry risks that all surgeries carry. So, I was willing to try the version to get the babies to turn. I say babies because I actually have had 3 successful versions! (Those babies just liked being head up!):confused3 Two of them were actually planned about one week before my due date, the other was a surprise - we went in to be induced at 41 weeks and they discovered she had flipped! :scared1: Anyway, for me, the actual procedure wasn't really "painful", but involved a lot of pressure. I guess by the third I was so used to the procedure, it didn't really bother me at all. I remember the hardest part was laying for that long on my back. I think with the first, I got lightheaded and they gave me an oxygen mask and let me turn on my side for a while, then they went ahead a completed the procedure. They monitor the baby very closely and I'm sure were prepared for an emergency delivery had anything gone wrong. I just wanted to give you a little reassurance that the procedure can work. Good luck to you! Please let us know what happens.:cloud9:

Thanks for the encouragement. I know the success rate is low but its nice to hear of it working for someone.

They did let me know that they will keep me for a few hours after to monitor the baby and myself for any problems. We're going to the hospital with our stuff just in case we end up having the baby tomorrow.

Like I said they don't deliver breech and I wouldn't want to try. Too many possible complications. So if the version doesn't work then c-section it will be. And the only reason they would do it tomorrow is if there were complications or I went into labor. Otherwise they won't do it until I'm 39 weeks. But like I said I don't think I'll make it another week and a half and neither did my OB.

My DD was born at 28 weeks and flipped breech the day I needed the C-Section (cheeky little cutie). They tried to flip her manually and I kneeled on all fours for about 2 hours waiting for the OR to clear but still, my DD wouldn't budge. Sooo i had the C-Section anyway. I was so worried because of all of those darn books I had read but turns out, it was no big deal, in fact my baby girl was born without stress of any kind (stress on her anyway). I've had 2 kids with one each way. For what it's worth there is no easy way to get a baby into the world. Both styles come with their own set of pros and cons and both are more likely to end well than with trouble. In the end just trust that whatever way presents itself will be the best way for your baby :goodvibes

FYI, I had no preference at all

OP, I only have 2 stories and they are baby turned all by themselves in time stories! Just wanted to tell you, the baby still may turn! The first one is my own son, 15 years ago, 36 weeks 5 days apptmt and he was breech and I was 100% effaced and 3 cm dilated. The doctor talked about version, but at 37 weeks 1 day, my water broke and he was head down all by himself!:goodvibes
Also, my niece turned at 39 weeks, my sil went in for her planned c-section because of her being breech (and mommy's high blood pressure) and she was sent home because the baby turned! She went into labor and delivered a few days later! Wishing you the best of luck and a healthy baby any way it comes!

Well we went in yesterday for the version and it didn't work. It was quite painful but I don't regret trying. They monitored us for a little over an hour after and everything was fine. I only let the Dr. try twice. Once in each direction and when he didn't seem to want to budge I said I'd had enough. I don't think he was going anywhere and I didn't want to put any extra stress on him or myself.

They scheduled me for a c-section on the 7th unless I go into labor sooner. He may still turn on his own. He had room last week to do it once he could very well do it again. If he doesn't then we'll proceed with the c-section. Either way I'm taking home a beautiful baby and all I want is for him to be safe and healthy.

They did give me the medicine yesterday to stop the contractions because I was having quite a few and I'm just waiting now for them to pick back up. She said they should by today or tonight. I've had a few but not as many as before. I'm hoping it didn't stall things out altogether. I'd really like to go before the 7th. But again, whatever happens happens. He will come in his own good time.

Thanks for all the support!

Just read all the responses. OP, sounds like you may end up with a c-section. My daughter was born on June 7th by c-section!

I did try a version with her. It was horribly painful. Two large male doctors did mine and it didn't work. I am short and she was frank breech and over 8 pounds and my first. She was so wedged in there they had to really pull on her to get her out!

With my second, didn't even consider a version. He was transverse. So another c-section for me.

I always say that it's better for planning. You can get your nails done, have your leg shaved, etc. and then you go to your appointment to retrieve the baby.

Best of luck with your delivery no matter how it happens.

Had the same thing happen at 38 weeks with my last I was so upset because my first two were regular birth and the prospect of being sectioned for a third held NO appeal The doctor was not a fan of inversion and basically said said you next week for a section In an effort to not have this happen, I made a few phone calls (no internet really this was 1991) and I called the local mid-wife She suggested that I try doing a pelvic tilt several time a day Basic idea is to prop up the hip and rear to high angle The baby's head will be pushed up in the rib area making it incomfortable for the baby and thus the baby turns around Well first day I did it, third try at bedtime about 10 minutes went by, and then there was like this huge movement and sure enough I turned to dh and said omg like at my stomach she is tuning around sure enough I thought she has turned because I could feel her head push into the canal Called the dr ealy morning and told him He was, no way that baby turned but come on right now to the hospital and I will do a quick ultrasound sure enough he was shocked when she did indeed turn he checked to make sure the cord had not gotten tangled or was caught up anywhere and once I got the OK I was off fo another fun 16 days of being pregnant

Thanks. And I totally agree.

You know, I'm really not a mean person, but I do get soooo annoyed at people who spout off some ridiculous malarky as if it were true.

My fear is that someone will actually listen to the stuff Bumbershoot says and do something they will regret. :sad2:

I'm really glad that you continue to try to set the record straight, even at the risk of coming off "mean". As the wife and mother of Type I diabetics, I have the same fears every time bumbershoot posts about curing her husband's Type I with diet and cinnamon--please, please don't let anyone listen to that nonsense. I have tried to engage in direct discussion with her about her statements, but she doesn't ever respond when she's called on it. We're not allowed to talk about religion and politics here anymore, but dangerous medical "advice" can be dispensed freely.

kt_mom, good luck with your delivery--you've done everything you can and you have it right--the only thing that matters is a healthy mom and baby.

kt mom, I've been reading along and I'm very happy you tried the version and that you didn't let it go on too long. As Deb in Iowa said (and I believe she's an MD so she knows what she's talking about), there could be complications from prolonged external version manipulations. Now you know it wasn't for you, and you can relax and look forward to holding your precious baby in your arms soon.

I didn't want a c-section, either, but my son was a 9 lb occipital transverse lie (body straight down, but head tilted way to the side) and after the midwifes tried to help him turn his head, they had the good sense to call in the OB who delivered my baby by c-section. I was grateful. Thank God we have doctors who can do c-sections and save our lives and our babies lives!:thumbsup2

I can't wait to see your post about your new arrival!

I know you didn't want a c-section, but it's honestly a breeze. I quite enjoyed my last one and look forward to the next! Of course we didn't have the whole rushing to the hospital excitement, and watching the baby come out would have been amazing, but there was also no stress of birth canal complications or labor pain. No pain at all really. Epidural+Toradol= :thumbsup2

Most important is that you'll have a healthy baby (who is obviously stubborn - now you know :rotfl: ).

I would opt for the C-section, my first DS was breech and they turned him, yes it was painfull and it was a long labor due to the fact my labor started on Wed evening and my DS was not born until 10:38 Friday morning , this was 40yrs ago and they did not do ultra sounds so no one realized he was breech until I had been in labor for sometime.
I was fortunate that my DS was a small baby 6lb 11oz but the birth caused me to hemorage, they had to pack me and I was in the hospital for 5 days, my DS ended up in an incubator and had to stay in the hospital 6 days, I never was able to hold or feed him my entire stay do to having to remain on bed rest due to the hemorage.
When I had my second DS my worst fear was he too might be turned wrong, the Dr assured me they would do the C-secton no more turning they had stopped using that method due to too many lawsuits.
On a side note my 2nd DS the cord was wrapped around his neck not once but twice I hate to think if he had been turned the wrong way what might have happened if they tried to turn him as they did my first.
Definately the C-section.

I also question this OB because he wants to take the baby out before the baby has decided it's time. DH was born at 44 weeks (normally, because in '72 things were more sane than now) and he was under 9 pounds. Can you IMAGINE if someone had taken him out 5 weeks before he was ready???? Makes me ill to think about.

!!!!

ROFLMAO- do you REALLY believe that he was born at 44 weeks and was less than 9 pounds?? I think perhaps his mama was covering something up and just telling people he was born at 44 weeks!

My DS was born at near 44 weeks, due Dec21 not born until Jan 9th and was only 6lb 11oz for what it is worth :lmao:

For what it's worth, he would have been 42 5/7 or almost 43 weeks.....

!

I had a c-section and it really was not bad at all. I think I was walking around better than those that had natural births. I was out of the hospital on Sunday and Monday I was shopping in the mall for clothes for my baby (needed preemie clothes!).
