And let's not forget the pouch of powdered spaghetti sauce. That is what I grew up with.

Yikes, I never even knew this existed!

In the pasta isle at the story. $1.64 versus $3.18 for a Jar of Newman's Own or $4.97 for a jar of Rago. Of course, Great Value Spaghetti Sauce in a jar is only $1.50. And Great Value makes a pouch of sauce too, not sure what it sells for.
My mom grew up in the depression so this is what she used. Just like we ate pizza make from a kit, mix up the dough, open up the can of sauce, spread on the cheese, stick in the oven.

Isn't that just the spices to go into sauce? You would need other ingredients (e.g. tomato sauce, puree, etc.) so it's hard to compare cost with a jar of sauce.

Yes, I think you are right. When I make my own, I use 28 ounce cans of tomatoes ($1), a squirt of paste from the tube, an onion, a few cloves of garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper and herbs, total cost is probably uber $1.50.

Could be. No idea, I've been "out of my parent's house" for 36 years so I don't remember.

I remember a different spice packet for spaghetti sauce from decades ago: Spatini. They even had TV commercial for it.

I think it's only available these days in food service size packages, and it's distributed by Lawry's.

My mother used Spatini to make homemade sauce. Can of crushed tomatoes, can of diced tomatoes, sauteed garlic, and the Spatini spice packet.

LOL. My wife makes an amazing spaghetti sauce from scratch, but we have discovered those Newman's Own jarred sauces are pretty amazing too.

OMG, Newman's??? I did try those for a while. But if you like a good Homemade sauce, and want the convenience of a jar, have you two tried Rao's.
VERY good marinara!!!!
Cost more, but you might not ever go back.

I'll see if any of the stores here carry it. It is not a brand I recognize.
I did go to their website, I see they are based in New York City. Reminds me of the old Pace salsa commercials making fun of their competition who made their salsa in New York City.

I buy Rao's when it's on sale. I refuse to pay $8 a jar.

Can you please elaborate on how/why Rao’s reminds you of Pace marketing? I think most people associate salsa in the US with the Southwest, but the Northeast has a high population of Italian immigrants—therefore making NYC probably one of the places you’d expect to produce the best mass-produced sauces. The region certainly has the best Italian restaurants in the country. I just don’t see the connection...

It’s been a dream of mine to eat at the original Rao’s in NYC. I often stay at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas, which has its own Rao’s, but I know it’s not the same, so I can’t bring myself to eat there!

I think Italy not New York when I think Italian food.

The Southwest is to Mexico what the NYC area is to Italy. This area has SO many Italian restaurants, really great ones, too. Its the number one thing folks miss when they move out of the area (unless they moved to Boston).
