Sorry guys, I just have to vent this.

We've got Randy booked, Kevin Knox booked etc. No problem. Disney are due for a call at the end of this year to book our date. No problem. Called Disney this week and booked our accommodation. No problem.

The problem is getting the holiday from work, even though they verbally agreed it. Found out today it's going to be a problem because I will be off for three weeks, back in work for 4 days and then an enforced public holiday on the Friday for Christmas Day and then the Monday for Boxing Day.

That takes me to two days over the allowed maximum in one month.

Why agree it verbally and then when I put the formal request in tell me it's a problem? My Manager (who is coming to the wedding) said it was no problem when we discussed it, she even knew I'd got people booked.

We can't get married before because it is Thanksgiving week and the week after will take us to the Christmas week.

So, there we go. No wedding. Can you imagine how p*ssed I am??

What happens if you go over the maximum in one month - do you get fired? Or can you take the days unpaid? I don't know how it works in the UK, but at every US job I've ever had, I have been able to take off any day I wanted as long as I didn't expect to be paid for it (paid vacation is a different story).

Is there any chance this situation could change over the course of the coming year? Or that you would be getting a different job?

How incredibly frustrating for you - I hope there is a way around this!

Thanks hun. The way I feel at the moment I could quite easily tell them to shove it where the sun doesn't shine so there could be a new job very soon!! :rotfl:

I am allowed to take 15 working days straight with out CEO consent and I wanted to take 17 (2 days to get everything ready and fly and 15 days holiday) which wasn't a problem - all agreed verbally by my Manager. What has caused the problem now is that it would be 17 working days, 4 days back at work and then another 2 days public holiday. They have said it's too much time over the month.

I have the number of days needed it's just the time of year with the public holidays. I get 25 days paid leave (5 weeks) plus the public holidays.

I'm going to talk to my Manager tomorrow and see exactly what we can do. If I have to give up the first 2 days and fly on the weekend then we can do that, but it still has the problem of the 4 days back at work and then off again.

What has really annoyed me is that it was agreed verbally, that I have been there for 4.5 years and never asked for anything and had hardly any time off ill. And I mean, it's not like it's just a holiday. IT'S OUR BL**DY WEDDING!!

Grrrrr!!

*takes a deep breath and tries not to cry* :sad1:

That is really sucky...

I take it your manager is a friend if they're going to be at the wedding? Maybe it just so happens that you're going to be sick, *wink wink* :lmao:

Surely there is something that can be arranged. It's just too stupid....

I think this will all work out :). People just love weddings and the fact your boss is invited and going that distance tells me you are a good employee and friend :). You know the old saying --DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF-- This to will work out fine :). My only thought is I envy you ---- 2 Weeks in the world :).

Happy Planning
Patty

I'm not helpful, but I just wanted to offer some support. I'm sorry you have to deal with this when it was already verbally approved!

Awww, don't cry. I hope it works out for you. This is an important event in your life - you'd think they'd have some compassion to bend the rules a little for you!

I'm sorry to hear you're in this situation Beep - do you work for a big company or someone local? It seems crazy they count Christmas Day and the day in lieu of Boxing Day towards your limit when you have no choice over it and the majority of the people in the country will not be working those days either :confused3

Thanks for the support. I work for a medium-sized company in the conveyancing industry and the time of year I picked is a quiet time for us anyway so I really don't understand what is going on.

My Manager was a good friend but has become very distant due to changes in responsibility in the company. When I said we were getting married in Orlando she said 'Oh, I've never been to Florida before. I can't wait!' so she sort of invited herself!

I've got to call her this morning so we'll see what happens.

I hope you get it sorted out. That seems so stupid to me that they are saying its too many days off in a month when you'd be off for Christmas anyway.

Alex,

What a nightmare!!

Have you spoken to your Manager yet this morning?

I really hope you can sort something out! x

Hope the phone call goes well today! I'm sure they'll find some way to work it out for you. It's not like you want time off to knit! :grouphug:

Keeping my fingers crossed for you and sending LOADS of pixiedust: and :goodvibes your way. I am SURE it can be worked out.

Hi hun,

I just wanted to help out a little, i had a similar problem with my employer when i headed out to get married, i even had to consult the union about it, (i no longer work there!!!) but by law any employer HAS TO grant any reasonable time off for your wedding, and as long as you give them double the time off that you require they HAVE to accomodate that. EG you want 3 weeks off you only have to give 6 weeks notice.

I hope you manage to get this sorted even if you take a couple of days unpaid. You need anything else give me a shout.

Toni x

Thanks everyone for your comments and support. Toni, that is interesting info - I didn't know that.

I spoke to her today and the problem (are you ready for this one?!) is that when I come back to work it is historically a quiet time for our company and they feel that I won't be productive. What they mean is that I will have done all my work before I go away and then have two weeks over the Christmas-time with nothing to do.

I work from home and we generally spend that time preparing for the coming year as no-one really wants training or a visit from us that close to Christmas and New Year. The company sees it as me having 3 weeks away and then 2 weeks 'taking it easy' as I will have done my prep before I go so effectively I am out of working action for 5 weeks.

They asked if we can change the timing to a week before or a week after which of course we can't do due to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

My manager also got the date of the wedding wrong and thought my time off was over Christmas which is why she verbally authorised it. How the hell she got it wrong I will never know as she is invited!

How ridiculous is that little lot?!

She is going to our CEO again tomorrow to explain that we can't move the dates due to cost etc and see how we get on then. It's company productivity vs a very disgruntled employee which she is fully aware of.

Oh, the other little gem is that they have stopped the maximum number of days in one block from 15 to 10 working days but our contract still says 15 and they haven't announced it yet. She said it would be granted in 'exceptional circumstances as long as it fitted witht the business needs.' Exceptional circumstances - what like a wedding perhaps????

Watch this space...

Let us know how kyou get on Alex, I hate it when companies behave like this, they should appreciate their hard working employees and not even have to think twice about a one off special event such as this
