A girlfriend of mine went to WDW in Jan and came home so sick that she had almost conviced herself she had a deadly disease. It turned out to be just a bug she picked up at WDW.

I've just returned home from Disney and the same thing has happened to me. I'm sicker than I have been in years. I've got a sore throat, headache, body aches and chills. What's strange is that the kids and dh haven't been affected at all.

DH and I were talking about how common this probably is... how many of you have returned from Disney sick? Just curious...........

My kids have come back and gotten the sniffles, but I always just assumed that it was caused by the change in climate.

I have never considered picking anything up from WDW. I am sure it happens, it has just never occured to me to consider it. :confused3

I came back very sick last year after my WDW/DCL/WDW trip. I was miserable and did not enjoy the last part of my trip. I had to call my doctor and get a prescription called in for an antibiotic.

couple days after this last trip I came down with tonsilitis, then bronchitis.

I've never been ill after visiting WDW, but I did catch a TERRIBLE (!!!!) cold/flu after visiting DLP!!!! I feel your pain....

We got wretchedly sick Marathon weekend. But we brought that nasty thing with us unknowingly.

Some of my teammates got ill--some did not. Some of my family picked it up and some did not.

You just never know.

This is a first for me. I just got back a few days ago and I have a very sore throat, cough and am losing my voice. I told DH I don't like the souvenier I brought back this time. :sad2:

Hmmm. I think it has been about 4 times now in the past 5 years I've either gotten sick, or returned home sick. Lets see:
Oct 1999 : Stomach ailment. Returned home a few days later covered with Chicken Pox. Out of commission for three weeks.
Aug 2002 : Home for two days with sore throat and nasty cough
May 2003 : Sick for 5 days of my trip + 2 weeks at home. Nasty, nasty non-stop cough. Afraid I wouldn't be admitted back home due to symptoms and Sars scare in Toronto.
Feb 2005 : Home for two days then developed extremely sore throat/vomitting.

It seems that every trip I go on I see tons of people with the likes of what I call Kennel Cough. Kind of a dry non stop cough. This past January I saw people coughing without covering their mouths or turning away from the crowd. One jerk coughed in my face. Lots of unsanitary people. Saw a woman leave a used diaper on a bench outside of Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary. And you wonder why people get stomach ailments. Yuck.

I used to always come home from Florida sick, always though I picked up something.

It took me years to figure out it was the combination of flying and allergies. I have allergies to mold spores. By the 3 day of my trips I would start to become light headed, then sniffles, ear pressure, sore throat , cough and headachy. I now start taking claritin a few days before the trip and during my stay. I do not have problems anymore.

Another safety tip keep hand wipes with you at all times. I'm constantly washing and wiping my hands. My DH thinks I have a germ issue, No Issue! My last 2 trips I've come home healthy.

You may not even know you have a allergy problem, changes in climate, temperatures and surroundings can trigger rapid changes in your body.

I'm curious out of everyone who gets sick coming home from WDW how many of you flew? I'm wondering because we have never gotten sick at WDW but we drive. My MIL who flew in to meet us there last year got sick with a cold, but not us. I wonder if it has more to do with flying than it does with WDW in general.
Just a thought.....

I read the other day that Orlando hospitals have seen a 300% increase in flu cases lately.

I drove.

I had a co-worker once who always came home sick from business trips. Diagnosis: Allergic to Roach Droppings. (all together now: Ewwwwwwwwwwww!). She couldn't figure out where she encountered them--and Doc said "you'd be surprised at what gets on those planes".

She had to have allergy testing for this diagnosis. Once diagnosed she didn't come home sick again.

As far as Fla--remember, we are seeing visitors from all over the country and world when you come to Orlando.

If you get sick, EVERY time, try getting allergy tested to rule out weird allergies like roach poop.

Before we enter Florida, I'm all stuffed up from sinus problems, etc. As soon as we hit the Floriday line, I can breathe again. The closer to WDW we get, the better I can breathe. It's so nice.:goodvibes But, as soon as we head home and we get around Warner Robbins, GA or so, I start getting sinus problems again and feel horrible by the time we get home.

This happens every time we go to WDW. WDW is medicinal for me.;)

I know alot of people that get sick after their trips. I think it's a combo of a number of things. First the plane, how many people have been on that plane and have trhey been sick...I'm sure a few have been. Second, I don't know about you, but when I'm at Disney, I'm up late, get up early and don't eat the way I do at home. So, of course you might pick up a bug quicker. Look at all the people around you...how many are coughing and sneezing? They touch things, you touch things. All adds up to coming home sick.

I came home from a WDW trip and the next day was flat on my back for two weeks with Influenza. My doctor wanted to hospitalize me! We know it came from WDW--I had been no place else for the previous 11 days.

Other than that, nothing more than a minor cold.

When my son was going on vacation in Peru last year, I had to bring him to the pediatrician for some vaccinations & advice for travel abroad. We also had a WDW trip in the works. The doctor told us that there was probably a higher chance that he would get ill from the germs in WDW than the ones in Peru. He explained that the germs in Peru are just "different" germs than we are immune to in New England, and someone coming from Peru is just as likely to get ill due to this. He then told us that since people visit WDW from all over the world and bring their germs along, it is very likely that you will get exposed to something your body isn't used to an get sick. Sounds lovely. :)

We just got back on May 2nd. I got really sick but that was my fault, 2nd degree burns and blisters on my feet, but ds 15 got really sick. The night we got home he said he didnt feel right, well by the next day he was really sick. He has asthma and he took all his meds the whole trip, never had an attack etc. Well he ended up having bronchitis and borderline pneumonia. The dr. had to give him 2 antibiotics, since the lst one wasnt working and he needed a powerful one the dr. said. I have no doubt he got the bug at disney. We also sat in the back of the plane and lots of people kept coming to use the bathroom so that might have had something to do with it too but we were right in front of him and none of the others in the family got sick.

I read a study once that whenever you go 500 miles outside of your "home" radius, you are way more susceptible to picking up illness than normal. Apparently, all the "bugs" outside your home base or foreign to you and you have no built-up immunity to them. This is why lots of people get sick and the illnesses tend to be doozies!!

Good Lord! Someone get this girl some meds so she can write a trip report for cripes sake!!!!!!

Seriously.

:teeth:
