Just returned from a three day weekend cruise on Carnival. It was a quick girlfriend escape and I really didn't have high expectations....good thing.

My friends finally told me to SHUT UP....seemed all I kept saying was, "Well, on DISNEY they ........"

One of my girlfriends got hurt on the trip....fell down some stairs and cut her leg quite badly (21 stitches)....the medical treatment was fine, but the Carnival treatment was deplorable. We had been drinking (DUH>>>>>>the FUN ship) and so certainly it was our fault. I'll give them that the fall probably wouldn't have occurred if we hadn't been drinking....but I'm thinking you shouldn't CUT yourself on stairs...never could figure out what caused the cut though. Their response was to suspend her charging priviledges so she couldn't drink anymore....or buy a soda, or a picture, or a t shirt......

Anyway.....even if my next cruise ISN'T Disney it certainly WON'T be Carnival!!

It's difficult not to compare, I know. DCL does a much better job of conducting their cruise line.

Their response seems very inappropriate to me also. Stairs aren't supposed to have sharp edges and cause cuts. And that was pretty silly to cut off her charging privileges.

Do your friends STILL tell you to shut up about DCL?

On the 7/27 Magic cruise a teen hit his head playing "capture the flag" and needed 5 stitches. They gave him the stiches then handed him a plush Stitch doll, and said "Here is your 6th stitch". :)

WAY TO GO DCL !!:D :D :D
That is the Disney MAGIC in action!

When DH and I were on our Honeymoon on the Magic in 1998 I fell down the whole flight of stairs on the side of Lumiere's. The DCL rep came out right away and asked if I was ok - and I was at that time more nervous and shaken up then in pain, but the next day I felt it. They didn't do anything - just asked me if I was okay and then walked away!! I was surprised they didn't do anything, but then again I really wasn't expecting anything - maybe because I am an adult they felt the didn't need to "compensate" me. I don't drink so that was not even an issue!!

I also had my camera and a purse with me and they tumbled down the stairs with me as well!! DH had the video camera so at least that didn't go too.

Since you said you were OK, they probably figured you were OK. But I bet if you had gone to the infirmary then or the next day you would have been looked over from stem to stern.

I also do not suspect that an adult would get a STITCH doll or other toy for an injury. I don't think it is a matter of "compensation". A lot of doctors have treats for kids like suckers or a plastic charm or ball or balloon after they go through something tough like stitches. Adults don't get those and if they did offer them, we might feel uncomfortable accepting it.

How are you now?

Actually, Disney had the "perfect" response to your accident, as far as corporate liability goes. They responded immediately, expressed concern, asked your condition, and when you informed them that you were ok, they promptly left, reducing any further embarassment (from a huge scene, paramedics, photographs etc.). That's what I used to teach my employees when I was Director of Security for a property management company.

Additionally, this response minimizes liability claims. If the company makes a big deal, taking pictures, taking statements, this often places more emphasis on the incident in the mind of the person than was originally there. It's kinda "Wow, if they think it's this important, maybe I had better talk to someone." Then, a lawyer gets involved, and now it's a lawsuit. That's what this approach is trying to avoid (definately not saying you would sue. But slip and falls are a major source of lawsuits in America)

I'm glad you're ok. I'm sure you were sore a couple of days. I know the last time I had a "FDGB" (Fall Down Go BOOM) I was sore for three days! I hope it didn't minimize any of your fun!

When we were on the Magic last October my DD5 got her upper arm pinched in an opening elevator door. Thank goodness that the floor where it opened there was a CM on a phone. I was yelling for someone to help and he dropped the phone and ran over to lend his assistance. As someone else said, we were both real shaken and I said no to going to the infirmary. We went back to our room and in about 5 minutes room service showed up with ice for her arm (I didn't call them); someone from the infirmary called our room and asked how she was; later that night the CM called and left a message for her saying he was glad she was ok. And the best part was that the next day, the CM delivered two stuffed animals, cards for the arcade and a personal note to our room. I wouldn't ever want someone to get hurt but the CM went so far out of his way to be sure she was alright. That customer service went a long way with me. Everyone stay safe!

JLSE50: I am fine now and am eagerly looking forward to our DCL vacation coming up soon!!

I agree with you about the compensation and I didn't expect anything and did not pursue it any further than telling them I was okay. A lot of people mention pixie dust that DCL sends their way for whatever reason and I think it would have been a nice gesture if they did send something or just call me and ask me how I was doing the next day, but like I said I didn't expect anything so I was not let down.

LISA: Glad you are OK and that the incident did not dampen your enthusiasm for another trip.

We too took our honeymoon on the MAGIC--in 1999--30 years after the wedding! :D It was the honeymoon we could not afford when we were college students. We have since gone on the 7 day Eastern Caribbean and are booked for the Western Caribbean this October.

Maybe the Pixie Dust dosage depends on the CM involved and the age of the person injured. There is probably a certain amount of concern and attention that they are taught to give and some go beyond that. Those are the ones who are doing "what Walt would do" and deserve our compliments on the comment card or a letter later on. Even the bare minimum Disney attention is far and away above what we encounter in other places.

Have a super cruise.

Thanks Jan for your concern and I hope you enjoy your Western cruise in October - it is coming up really soon!!

LISA: I hope you also have a good cruise--how soon do you get to go? MAGIC? Western or Eastern? WONDER? three day? four day?

I am off to work so will check the thread when I get home this afternoon.

Have a good day,
