So my phone rings at 3:30 am and.........

this is what the call sounded like


Caller: is this mrFDNY?

Me: Who the heck is this?

Caller: hi this is captain so and so from manhattan:

Me: (heart racing,thinking this could only be bad news from the FDNY at 3:30 am, One of my guys is hurt bad or dead is what I'm thinking and since manhattan has the best burn center i figure its the capt calling me to inform me to come there cause one of my guys requested i come)

Me Again: What's wrong capt??????

Caller: nothing really,just got off the phone with brooklyn boro command and they gave me your number,Just about my whole fire house is out sick or injury or vacation. I'm looking for a couple of good guys to come fill in at manhattan today for the overtime to cover us.

Me: very impressed,that my name was given as a good guy and someone they could count on.What time do you need me and how many guys you need i know of a couple of guys that i can give a call too.they are always looking for over time.

Caller: i need at least 6 guys around 9 or 10 am.

Me: You do know its 3:30 in the am,thats in 5 to 6 hrs away, right?

Caller:Yes, did i call you too early??

Me:Too early???you could have called at 7 am and i would have still been able to make it there at 9 am with time to spare,I live 12 miles from manhattan in brooklyn.

Caller: good so you'll come to us today?

Me; NO,now that i"m awake I know i will just about be falling back to sleep around 8 am(ok what i really said was yes count me in!!!)I love working manhattan,since i don't get to work there all that often.

But, i mean why in the world would you call someone 6 or 7 hrs early to come in?Why not call me at 6 or 7 am and ask why 3:30 am?I know at least one guy from my fire house that would have cursed him out and slammed the phone on him for calling so darn early.
I text page 3 of my guys to see if the brooklyn crew felt like ripping up manhattan today.2 of them are in,as for the third i think hes at a bar and had a couple too many to work at all,as i sent him "Do you want overtime tour in manhattan at 9 am with me and john and billy might be comming too?"

I think he was at a bar all night and feels sick,but i don't really know for sure.

He really should have waited til five IMHO.... But, I'm sure he wanted to catch you before you went out for the day at 3:30am

Nah, I wouldn't be mad at him. Sure, getting a phone call like that at 03:30 is a pain, but he has slots he needs to fill. What if you had said, "Sorry, already have other plans." He'd have to work his way down the list and who knows how late that would be until he found the guys he needs. Otherwise what's he going to do -- wait until 7am to call and find out your busy and then really panic?

Have a good day in Manhattan. What station are you from in Brooklyn? My DH hung out a couple times somewhere in Canarsie. I'll have to ask him which company. Actually for his birthday one year I called the guys in Canarsie and got DH in there for the weekend and surprised DH with the trip. It was lots of fun!
