So Much For Surge Protectors

I have my PC on a surge protector. I paid over $100 for it. I have DD's PC on a surge protector. I only paid about $40 for hers. I also have a special surge protector on my house installed by the electric company. I paid $50 for it. So, you might understand why I'd like to pull out my hair.

We apparently had some type of power surge. We were not home at the time. We get home and I turn on my PC only to find my monitor had gone out. It was a very nice flat screen 17 inch monitor that I've had for a little over a year (warranty was for one year). So, I go in to DD's PC and find that her PC won't come on. It won't do anything. I tried everything. It is getting power, but it is dead.

Fortunately, DD's monitor works. So, we now have one dead CPU and one dead monitor. I contacted the power company and their surge protection only covers things such as the air conditioner, refrigerator and washer/dryer. It does not cover any thing like televisions or PCs. Just great!

Did you have the phone on the surge protector? We keep our phone line that is attached to our computer on the surge protector.

I'm sorry! I would be so mad.

The most I have had go is a modem, and that is not that expensive to replace. I will admit I am pretty neurotic about unplugging my computer when not using it now though.

My surge protector comes with a lifetime guarantee that they'll fix or replace whatever their device doesn't adequately protect.

Do you have dial up or a cable modem? If it is dial up, the surge may have come through your phone line and bypassed the surge protector.

So does mine. I had a monitor go out due to electricity. I had to send the surge protector back to the company for them to inspect it. It was the protectors fault. The company replaced our monitor very quickly.

So does mine... check that too!

Also, the CPU could be as simple as a power supply being fried. I know a friend or two of mine had that happen during power surges. That's an easy $20 fix too :)

I hope you can get it all fixed soon!

Mine also. Peg, I would say that a higher priced one like the one you have would be similar as it is not just a glorified multi-socket extension cord with a on/off button. Even Kendall's. Not sure about a whole house one for 50 bucks though. Check the warranty of that model. If you don;t have the warranty, check it on the manufacturer's website.

The $10 surge protector that I got from Walmart has a lifetime guarantee. You didn't happen to save the packages from your surge protectors?

Also remember that some Battery backups are really just that and not surge protectors at all.

Thank, everyone. I'll did out my warranties and check out what type of guarantees I have. I'll also take Kendall's CPU in to be checked out.

I had both on cable modems, so I'm sure it was a surge through the electrical system.

I'm sure, in the long run, I'll get the items replaced. It just a hassle. Oh well, just one more of life's little speed bumps!
