We bought him on Valentines day 2001. We went to the pet shop to buy his mothers bird some new toys and decided to nip upstairs to look at the birds and found him.
He was all alone in the front corner of a cage full of birds, i asked the attendant about him as he was the only bird in the whole cage with his pearl markings, all the other ones were ordinary grey cockateils, so just really making conversation, she said he was being picked on by all the other birds as he did not belong to a pair and as he has to sit at the front of the cage he is subject to people putting thier hands in trying to touch him, so he is a bit moody, thats why he hasn't sold in 6 months.
At that point a grey cockateil came over and took a nip out of him! that was it, we had not intended on buying him, but i was not going to leave him there so he came home with us.
When we first brought him home, he did nothing but sit on his perch and silently look at us, it took about a year for that to change. Now we have a bird who thinks he is human and we do spoil him rotten! He will eat a small portion of what ever we are eating for dinner on his own plate, but mostly he decides what ever we are eating is much better then what he has, so he helps himself to everything. he LOVES peas, pasta, brown bread, baked beans, apples, and mashed potato!
Even though he walks all over us.. literally, he is still terrribly hand shy and my hand is covered with my sleeve before he will allow me to touch him and will give a playful nip if I try and touch him without the sleeve, if this is ignored he will give you a bite to remember!
All in all he is a complete unexpected joy and an absolute terror all at the same time. I named him pixel when i was making some Kisekae dolls for a friend in photoshop for her web site, when he all of a sudden started to merrily walk up and down the keyboard changing all the cel codes! terror!
