We can just head to the park Friday morning and they will let us know when our room is ready? Is that correct?

In theory that's how it should work...in reality some people report having issues..
 
Probably, for us its been about 50/50 when using online check in! In 5/6 stays this year we have done exactly the same thing prior to arrival, online check-in, preferences, credit card etc. and about half the time we have to physically check in. I have asked the CM if they knew the reason and none so far have been able to tell me why it works one trip and not the next. So I just do online check in and xx my fingers :)
 
They might let you know. It’s not an absolute. We’ve gotten a text once and it was after we were there and I stopped at the front desk just in case. 10 minutes after walking away from checking in and a nice convo with the cm, got the text.
 

FYI, Disney recently added a feature to the MDE app on your phone that will ‘potentially’ show your room number when it is ready that day. The last few trips I have been in the “no text or e-mail” camp, but it did show up on the app. It’s under the “My Plans” part. YMMV on this feature too, but it’s been pretty solid for me so far.
 
We went last week, went to parks and a few hrs later got a text with our room number. Worked with no problems for us.

We've been the opposite.
We have gotten out text with our room number 90% of the time but have never had our room number show up on the app till the next day, even if I signed out and back in, refreshed the app, etc. Some trips the app never showed our room number. Strangest thing. Never worried about it but curious none the less

We've only had to physically go to the check in counter when we have arrived earlier than check in (like 10:00 AM), just to let them know we were there whenever a room was ready. I'd say your chances are pretty good for getting a text. The worst is when you get a text and you're still at work because you're flying in that night!

This is us too, I think once the room number worked (I actually think it was our first stay after the update) never since. Text seems to work fine for us most of the time.
 
To follow up, about 3 the room number showed up in MDE, shortly thereafter I received a text saying the room wasn't quite ready, then immediately received another one saying it was. Go figure.
