We are gong to buy into DVC, hopefully by the end of May to get the perks that are going on right now. Right now I currently have a point rental booking through a DVC member for june 15-20th for a studio at SSR. If we end up becoming DVC members ourselves by the end of May, is there a way the member that I rented from can transfer the points to our membership and I could possibly upgrade our room if a larger size is available? Or would this cause us to lose our current reservation? Anyone ever heard of this?

Also, lets say we buy in in May. That would make our UY be May 1 or June 1? If I don't use the points for the remainder of this calendar year I would have to bank them by Dec 31? After I bank them, will I still have access to them for the remainder of my current UY or would I have to wait until the next? I think these questions are the only things confusing me

I've never heard of anything like that being done, but that's not to say it couldn't be. The problem is that you WOULD have to cancel one reservation to make another. Well, maybe not though. If you are planning to upgrade from a studio to a 2 bedroom, you could book a 1 bedroom and have it linked to your existing ressie that you rented, making a 2 bedroom. Of course, that assumes there is something available too. That way you wouldn't have to cancel the studio portion, but could add the 1 bedroom portion.

Actually, each "unit" has a use year assigned to it, so the use year you get when you are a new purchaser is going to be the assigned use year for the "unit" they are currently selling.

The member you rented from will have to cancel the reservation. Depending on their use year and the status of the point (must be current year points to transfer), they may or may not be able to transfer the points to you. And you may or may not be able to use them for a reservation in June. There are waitlists for some resorts and some room types for June already.

Plus if they cancel the reservation (which is what they will have to do) less than 31 days before the start of the reservation, these points become holding points. I'm not sure holding points can be transferred. And they have to be used during the current UY and can't be used to book any reservation greater than 60 days out.

However, if you plan on going from a studio to a larger villa, they might be able to cancel the reservation, book the larger sized villa with as many points as they can and then you use your points to book the remaining days. But you may leave them in the lurch depending on the current status of their points.
