So, how do you get your spouse to say YES!

With the upcoming price increases, Bay Lake is actually starting to look like it is making a run for the cheapest resort of all based on its remaining use years and MFs. You will look frugal if you compare the costs of it to what VGF will be costing over the same time period.
interesting thought.. I really do want BLT.... even if I have to settle for less points, I think the value to rent if need be or stay at Christmas is worth it....

Two suggestions, but I am probably just repeating what you already know, or have read elsewhere

  1. Compare to what else you plan to do with the money
  2. Draw up your intended/desired disney vacation schedule accounting for age of kids etc

The motor home is a good comparison point. The initial purchase portion of a DVC contract is essentially purchasing a depreciating asset, just like a motor home. The difference is there is a fixed supply and a growing demand for DVC contracts, and Disney effectively utilizes price control with its ROFR mechanism. So the value you put into a DVC contract depreciates much slower than a vehicle, and may even gain value, depending on when you sell. If you intend to utilize it for a limited time frame (say 5-10 years) it’s highly likely you recover a very high percentage of the value in your initial purchase, whereas a vehicle (unless it’s collectible / exotic), will hold significantly less value. On the other hand, if you find yourself using it for a very long period of time (close to expiration) then you know you have already made the right purchase and extracted significant value out of it. There is also a very real missed opportunity cost, if you are considering investing instead. However if the purchase is compared to another depreciating asset that factor is zero. It’s also important to consider that this isn’t all or nothing. A family might have younger aged kids and plan to go to Disney frequently during that period of life until they get older, and then sell off a chunk contracts, retaining a few for occaisonal travel.

The bigger problem is by far the commitment to paying recurring dues, but those can be negated (and then some) by renting, and all the rental sites claim that they are in demand for points.

You can then compare a projection of these factors on your desired vacation plan to a projection without.

Great points! Motor home for sure depreciating faster! We plan to keep as our son is 9 and many more trips planned to disney, aulani, disney land, HH etc. I just don't see how we can go wrong...

But, if something changes and my son is Done with disney, its good to know we can sell... but for some reason I think he will love having this to share with his family at least for a little while....

Thanks for your advice!!

so, I have an update.. I got home from work today and he says... well, if you can get that Motor home sold I will consider it!! So... I updated the ad and lowered price a bit... I think spring may be a better time... so we shall see....

I would love to go to disney for either Thanksgiving 2018 and Christmas 2018 but already have allocated points for a christmas or spring break 2019 -2020... so I would either pay cash for 2nd 2018, buy more points or not go!

I'm a huge disney nut as well -- but one thing I would ask you is what is your plan for the BLT points? Unless you're planning on going to BLT in the hard to get times -- you're probably better off buying SSR points and using those to switch to BLT at 7 months.

I just nagged my husband to death until he said yes. Also, I made many spreadsheets and told him about my theories which supported my need to buy more back in the spring/early summer (mainly that VGF was going to go up and be harder to get through ROFR in the very near future). Our VGF and BLT points are mainly used by us, but they’re great properties if you want to rent out your points some years when you want to travel elsewhere. It’s a bit of a pain, honestly, but not so much that it cancels out the $$$ you make from renting. I’ve already rented a few times when we wanted to go somewhere else or we used one property instead of the other. Like you, we live too far away to make it a multiple time a year thing, so we will go once a year on average. However, we’re planning on taking a Disney break after our trip in early 2019 because of all of the Star Wars stuff opening up until the hysteria dies down at least a little bit. After our early 2019 trip, we probably won’t be back for 12-24 months. We will have been to WDW 3x, DL 2x and on a Disney cruise for 6 total Disney excursions in 4 years after we take the 2019 trip. That’s a little much for my DH. He doesn’t realize that I snuck an extra trip in there when we bought more points, so Shhh! :ssst:

I hear ya.. well, we really like to go thanksgiving and I can see us going christmas time too.... so I figure I have to own blt if I really want to stay close to the magic.. Spring break is another time. My dh hates going in summer, so hot! So that is last resort

We snuck a trip in (Thanksgiving 2018) and are now out of 2018 points and borrowing well into 2019!! If you want to do the holidays at BLT in 2018, now would be the time to look for an owner who is renting points, and assume you are staying lake view. All the standard rooms (at all sizes) are booked already.

OH, I am not planning BLT for next year, but in general that is why I feel I need to own there vs. buying ssr.... or else i would...

This morning I approached my DH about a small POLY add on. This morning his reply was is this a need or want :) By this afternoon he listened to some of my logic behind th e purchase and now is willing to go on the wait list....:)

So I just got my husband to agree to buy the VGF contract that I wanted. I was really hoping to snag a lower price but i don't think that its going to happen with all the prices going up, and since I offered full price we got it. Hopefully I am done now. His birthday at the Poly bungalows really convinced both of us that we needed more points, the whole family LOVED it.

I was totally surprised that he agreed so quickly. He was like well we loved staying at the VGF, we had managed to get a night in October, and its our daughters favorite resort. So now we have a contract for each of the kids later. And when I put the offter in I think my phone rang about 2 minutes after so guess it was meant to be.

Congrats! That's pretty much how our discussion went too. It's also our daughter's favorite. Now in nail-biting ROFR.
