So, how do you get your spouse to say YES!

I just texted my husband at work asking if I could buy my BLT I want/need because I originally figured we needed around 300 total, but due to a contract being taken in ROFR I only ended up with 180 AKV points.. with the thoughts of adding on at another resort etc. etc.... but actually doing the add on is harder of course, now hes like oh we have enough.... and prices have gone up etc.

So, I sometimes just text him crazy things out of the blue hoping for a sure! why not! We shall see!!

Still waiting on a reply.....

LOL.. KIM

I would show him how prices are set to rise next month. It not only shows that he can get a good deal right now, but that he can also treat this as a bit of a real estate investment (that is by no means certain). It's a win-win if you sell it right.

LOL I have posted many sagas on here about getting my DH to come around. We are in ROFR for a VGF contract and due to personal life issues we are out of 2018 points for BLT already (the contract we closed on in May!). So I just told DH we might need more BLT points. He just snorted. It may be too soon as we haven't even passed ROFR on the VGF contract, LOL. I really hope it passes because the resales on the market now are looking like good deals and new listings will probably be priced a bit higher now.

Also I come back early and often - I just put things out there "for discussion; you don't need to say yes or no now, just something to think about ..."

Well, my text did not get me anywhere!! He says I want to vacation more than anyone he knows etc etc... he does have a point.. we are trying to plan a trip to Costa rica this summer... and doing disney spring break etc... but... my point is we can always rent them when we don't need them. But, I do have a motorhome up for sale, it would help my cause if it would sell..... we just can't use it enough to justify having it.. love it but its wasting.. one day though...I will keep trying.. darn those prices are getting too high...

I will try that, I usually do and it works, but it will take me some time... thats how I got the first one.. I am just so mad.. I should have waited and bought a bigger contract.. when I lost my 300 points to rofr... I started rethinking things and I still like this idea, but I needed to get my points while he was in agreement..... ugh.

I am trying!! Thanks for the advice.... I was trying to tell him we could always rent them etc.... if we didn't need them for that year.

In the end that still might be for the best - big contracts are harder to unload if/when you decide to sell. And you never know, you may decide you like a different resort better.

I know .. I really want bay lake.. but I may never be able to talk him into spending that kind of money... going consider ssr...... a little more. I have to sell that motorhome then I will have more bargain power!

With the upcoming price increases, Bay Lake is actually starting to look like it is making a run for the cheapest resort of all based on its remaining use years and MFs. You will look frugal if you compare the costs of it to what VGF will be costing over the same time period.

The other thing is - you haven't taken a DVC vacation since buying your first contract, right? If so, I might wait until you take your DVC vacation. We went on rented points (planned before we bought DVC; it was actually supposed to be a DVC scouting trip) in August, and after that trip DH was totally on board for getting more points! Then we just had to dicker for a few months about which resort.

Two suggestions, but I am probably just repeating what you already know, or have read elsewhere

  1. Compare to what else you plan to do with the money
  2. Draw up your intended/desired disney vacation schedule accounting for age of kids etc

The motor home is a good comparison point. The initial purchase portion of a DVC contract is essentially purchasing a depreciating asset, just like a motor home. The difference is there is a fixed supply and a growing demand for DVC contracts, and Disney effectively utilizes price control with its ROFR mechanism. So the value you put into a DVC contract depreciates much slower than a vehicle, and may even gain value, depending on when you sell. If you intend to utilize it for a limited time frame (say 5-10 years) it’s highly likely you recover a very high percentage of the value in your initial purchase, whereas a vehicle (unless it’s collectible / exotic), will hold significantly less value. On the other hand, if you find yourself using it for a very long period of time (close to expiration) then you know you have already made the right purchase and extracted significant value out of it. There is also a very real missed opportunity cost, if you are considering investing instead. However if the purchase is compared to another depreciating asset that factor is zero. It’s also important to consider that this isn’t all or nothing. A family might have younger aged kids and plan to go to Disney frequently during that period of life until they get older, and then sell off a chunk contracts, retaining a few for occaisonal travel.

The bigger problem is by far the commitment to paying recurring dues, but those can be negated (and then some) by renting, and all the rental sites claim that they are in demand for points.

You can then compare a projection of these factors on your desired vacation plan to a projection without.

DVC isn't necessarily a depreciating asset, it will be eventually, but you could plan to sell after 10 years or so and get your money back. Depending on the econmy at the time of course.

The contracts we bough in 2016 are already worth more than what we paid for them.

My husband would tell you to send your husband my way - he will realize he has it easy with your vacation desires. I promised mine 2018 was the year I would skip Disney because we are doing a cruise and a few other small vacations. I "accidentally" also
booked three Disney vacations.
Two weekends ago I casually mentioned to my husband the minimum add on may go up to 50 points. He told me to call our guide right away. "Ok, if you insist!" By Tuesdaythe points were in our account
On that note, I've been considering a motor home. I've already spent so much for 2018 vacations, he won't notice if I throw that into the budget. Do you live in CT by any chance?

I went on the DVC tour by myself-DH was so disinterested. However, when I came back with a huge smile on my face, he was smart enough to say "Sounds like a great idea-let's buy!" Maybe you shouldn't have texted him, but asked him in person, where he could see that smile. As they say-"Happy wife, happy life!"

great point.... first trip march! Maybe that will help him change his toon. Plus I want to go to alunai and that takes a few years points etc. Even just 100 more would give me 280... that would help a lot.

You need to let him experience a 1 or 2 BR and then experience a studio. Then casually mention that from now on, you will be in studios to make the points stretch farther.
funny! Yeah, that was my justification for wanting 300 points! So we can stay in 1 bed room or 2 bed rooms!!

I wish... but I usually get my way, just takes me some time.... and selling the motorhome will help too....

Lol, that is hilarious! No, I am in Texas! with the MH you really need to be able to use it quite a bit for it to be worth having, maitenance, storage cost etc. I love it.... but we just don't use it as much as I wish..... Well, I will keep plugging at it...
