It is a good thing they responded so quickly. It could have been a domestic situation that you just covered for. It is glad to see them checking it out.

One time I tripped over the phone cord and accidentally hit the 911 button but didn't know it. When I put the phone back up where it goes and hung the phone 911 was calling me back. I was so many shades of red.

Not all police departments do. Mine didn't send anyone to the house when my 1.5 year old called 9-1-1 last month. I posted a thread about it on here because I was so mortified when the sheriff's department called me.

Niece had somehow gotten ahold of his police radio and had pushed the "Officer Down" button!!

Oh my goodness, you definitely win the award!!! "Officer Down" is a whole different level of emergency than an interrupted 9-1-1 call. I bet every officer en route had never been so relieved to get a false alarm!

I was subbing for the school secretary one day and I got a call from 911 saying that someone placed a 911 call from inside the school. I am thinking ok, there has to be at least 50 phones in the building-how in the HECK am I supposed to know where the call came from. The school principal was at a meeting off site so I was "in charge" . The operator said to check around and call her back. I went from room to room to see if anything was up. Finally figured out that the room where they were holding the book sale was responsible. They thought they had to dial 9 to get out of the building and were calling an 800 number on a phone where the "1" button sticks. They were trying to figure out why it was taking so long for their call to connect . I am surprised that they didn't send a cop car at least-but my guess is they figured it was a school and maybe a prank .

I think I've got everyone beat!Years ago,we woke up to firemen bursting into our bedroom.We lived on the second floor and they had to come up over the balcony to get in.Reason?Preset 911 button that the CAT had pressed!Took a while to get our hearts started again!Needless to say,that phone went away.

Oh boy lots of 911 stories. Add me to the list. When DS14 was 3 he was sent to his room for something or other. Well, instead of going to his room he went to ours and dialed 911 but hung up without saying anything. We got the phone call saying someone had just called 911 and we determined DS did it and told them everything was alright. An officer came out anyway to make sure and when we told DS that he was only to dial 911 if someone was very sick or hurt, his response was "you hurt my feelings". I'm sure the officer got a kick out of that one.

I used to nanny for two 18 months olds, and one day after the mom came home, one of them got hold of the phone and dialed 911 and then laid it down. I guess they sent out the police since they couldn't call back. Funny thing was, both the mom and I were 9 months pregnant, so when they got there, we had a hard time convincing them that we were okay. We didn't even know why they were there and never figured out which kid made the call, LOL

Over the weekend we were still scratching our heads at the "big response" of the police department to DS's accidental 911 call. Today, I know the reason -

Our incident happened Friday night. Apparently, on Wednesday night, on a street around the corner from us, there was an armed home invasion!!

Three armed men with ski masks kicked in the back door of the home, corralled the woman who was home in her bedroom, and ransacked the house. They are not disclosing what, if anything, was taken. She managed to call 911 while they were still in the home, although they had fled by the time the police arrived.

No wonder they sent three officers in unmarked cars to our house - they were probably thinking, oh crap, here we go again!

We have lived in this town for 8 years, and the only other even slightly similar crime I can recall was when a family returned from vacation to find someone had broken into their garage while they were away. Now I'm kind of freaked out, although I keep telling myself that the MO seems fairly specific, and that they targeted that home for some reason (I hope!).

I can't even imagine what was going through the head of the cop on my doorstep while he waited for me to open the door!

Wow!!!! Scary about the home invasion! But I'd be glad about the police's quick response. My nephews did that once (they were about 6 & 8 years old at the time), and let's just say that my sister-in-law was quite emphatic as to what would happen if they ever did it again.

A different "take" on a 911 call. DH was home one evening I was working. The front doorbell rang so he opens the door to find an off duty policeman on our front porch holding a guy in a headlock. He says to DH "Call 911 and tell them an officer needs back up right away". So DH did. He said about 3 minutes later about 12 police cars come screaming onto my street. I didn't think my town even HAD 12 police cars. Anyhow, turns out that the off duty policeman was driving down my street following a car that was driving erratically so he pulled the guy over. The guy was drunk, started giving the cop a hassle, apparently they wrestled and rolled around on my front lawn for a minute or two until the policeman got him under control with the headlock and was able to get to my doorbell. And apparently my DH is stone deaf & also blind because he heard none of this even though he was sitting in the livingroom which is in the front of the house and this was all happening right under the huge bay window right there.

So we are probably known as the "blind and deaf people" in our town's police department.

As a police officer I can imagine what is going through the officers mind. Everything from a prank to the real thing. The followup phone call may have reassured them a bit, but still need to check it out.

The call remains attached to the address and phone. If it happens again the dispatch will relate if there are any prior incidents at 911 for the home. Everything from emergency EMS call to false 911. Lets the officer know if it is a home that may have domestic history, etc.

I am so alarmed about the home invasion and hope there are precautions you can take. There have been some in our area. Once a teen boy was at home ill from school and was shot. So tragic.

Keep your doors locked, and maybe buy some of those surveillance cameras from Harbor frieght for $5 that are fakes to place outside as a deterent. I think they take mail orders if there is not one near by. Get up at least motion detector lights too, front and rear.

We have had a couple 911 call problems too. The phone numbers in our area start with 910 and our 1 button was sticking!! OMG!! They called back immediately both times. It was definately time to get a new phone!

Our phone called 911 while we were on vacation. Apparently, some cordless phones, if left off the charger, will call 911 when the battery is dying. 911 tried to call us back, but we didn't answer since we weren't home. The police came out. Thank goodness, our neighbor saw what was happening and told them we were on vacation. She had a key and the officers asked her to let them in.

We always check to make sure all phones are on the chargers now before we leave the house for extended periods of time.

I once had 4 policemen arrive at my door with their guns drawn. I opened the door and they yanked me outside they kept saying " are you allright are you allright? Who else is in the house with you?" My Dh happened to be on the road at the time and I was scared to death that they were bringing bad news (the gun thing should have sent a clue but it didnt register at the time) I closed the door behind me before DD could hear whatever they had to say.

She kept trying to open it while I was talking with them so I was a little confused. once I finally figured out that they didnt bring bad news I invited them in. They said no that they were following up on numerous 911 calls from my house in quick succession. I knew it didnt come from any of us. My kids had just gotten home from their Grandmas and I knew I hadnt done it.

They asked if I had a fax in the home and I said yes, and they all put their guns away. Said that sometimes the fax will auto call 911 if something is wrong (weird???). I said "Well the qwest guy just left" and they drew their guns again and said "Where is he??" I said " He just left. He was here for 4 hours trying to fix their line. He was legit I checked his badge and everything" They finally relaxed and made sure again that we were all ok. Said to lock the doors just in case. gee thanks.

Mine's not quite as funny as some here, but we were eventually able to laugh about it...
It was back in October of this year, a few days before Halloween. DPartner had just bought a fog machine for Halloween special effects, and wanted to try it out. So she preceeded to read the directions and got it set up...However, she failed to read the part of the directions where it stated that the machine was to be used only in a well ventilated area, and that the machine could activate some home smoke detectors.
Well, guess what. There were no windows open in our house, so you can imagine what happened when the fog hit the ultra-sensitive smoke detector that's connected to our monitored Brinks Home Security system!! First, the ear drum shattering alram that could be heard from a mile away...we put in our code and waited for the call from Brinks. When we got the call, we explained what happened and the person said she would cancel the fire department call that automatically goes in when an alarm is tripped. We opened all of the windows and turned on the fans. But as you may or may not know, fog machine fog does not dissipate the same way smoke does. It lingers. And so the alarm kept tripping over and over and over again! Finally, the Brinks lady said she would place it on override for 30 minutes to let the fog clear...Then, the lights and the sirens came.
Two large fire trucks, one ambulance, and two rather large, axe wielding firemen on our front lawn later, and we got it all cleared up. It was rather embarrassing though. *SIGH*

Mine isn't about a kid, but I do have a funny 911 story, from back when I was in grad school.

Anyone who has ever lived in Tulsa can tell you that the streets are laid out on a grid, and the N-S streets are numbered. This would all be very simple if the designer had not gone one step too far in the older part of town, and doubled up on the numbers. For each number, there is a "Street" and a "Place". I lived on East 5th Street. The apartment was on the first floor of an old converted bungalow, there was another apt. in the back and one upstairs, but the front door opened into my place off a large porch.

So, it's finals week, and I'm in my apt. studying at 1 am with headphones on, trying to keep myself awake. I kind of dimly hear some kind of pounding noise, and decide to mosey on up front into the kitchen to look out the front door and see what might be causing it. I pulled back the curtain just in time to see 8 firefighters with a battering ram prepare to make a run at my front door. Naturally, I opened the door! The thing was, the room was very short because the house had been chopped up, and the wall to the kitchen was only about 7 feet back from the door. The firefighters in full gear just kept right on going and hit the wall, then all fell in a pile at my feet when they bounced.

I'm standing there in my PJ's with my coffee and my book with my headphones dangling around my neck, and they start grilling me about the fire. Um, no, no fire here. "Let me make a call, ma'am." He calls, and the dispatcher tells him that the fire is on East 5th Place. Oops. So they all scramble up off my floor and run for the truck. The fun part was that as they drove off, two of them tipped their hats to me!

I was left hoping that the folks on the next block hadn't suffered any major losses while we reenacted a Keystone Kops routine.

I too had the toddler call 911 and they sent the police over. (I hadn't know DS had had the phone. We walked over the neighbors for something {afterwards, I had DS with me}. Not only did the police go to my house, they went to the neighbors when I didn't answer. {I guess better than breaking down my door first!})

Funnier though, my mom accidentally called 911 from work recently. (Outside line requires a 9, then she dialed a long distance number... apparently she doubled them up somehow 9 9 1 1...) Police came over, tracked down her extension (hospital complex over several buildings).

My mom was mortified (my dad is a 911 operator to boot- she hears all the false alarm stories!) Her boss walked in, starts making comments about who is your wink wink friend. Apparently HE thought it was some sort of singing telegram guy. ??? I guess the whole thing was just a comedy of errors.

I live in a small town and worked as a paramedic here for many years, so naturally, I knew all the dispatchers. My son, who was 18 months old at the time, picked up the phone, while I was in the bathroom one day and dialed 911, and was talking to the dispatcher. He asked him "Will you come pay with me?" (meaning play) I heard him talking and asked him who he was talking to. Of course I got the "Nobody Mommy" routine. My phone rings, and I see it is the 911 center calling back, I answer, thinking I am getting called due to no trucks available or something, and no, it is the dispatcher asking me what am I doing letting my son call him. Of course I knew nothing about it. He said he was trying to get him to give the phone to me, and all my son was doing was asking him to pay with him. He did tell him mommy was in the potty though.

Just had to chime in w/ our 911 incident.

About 4 yrs ago. DH was getting ready to leave for dds night football game. DH is a police officer and was in injury leave at the time. The door bell rang. I walked to the front door- then out onto the enclosed porch to open the door. As I was walking out I noticed the cruiser-- I said to DH-- The PD is here. I answered the dr and the Police officer wanted to know if everything is okay. I also notice 3 more cruisers and about 6 officers. I said yeah why??? DH walks (or should I say hobbles) out on the porch. They start asking if we were fighting/yelling at each other. We both look at each other and say no. A neighbor had called in a domestic. I asked him if he wanted to come in and check everything. I muttered 'man 2nd time running in w/ the police today" The officer is what do u mean. I told him I set our retail warehouse alarm off today and the police responded. We told them we were not arguing. I had just got done doing a nubulizer trtment w/ dd2 and she was not happy about it. He asked if we were yelling at her. I said no she was yelling at us!!
He came in and looked around-- didn't ? the kids. Another officer disappeared outside and came back and said all was good. I guess once they figured out we were okay they left.

Now this was in Late October== all windows closed. It had to be the wacky 1st floor next door neighbor. I was quite taken back by the response to the call but then remembered that a wk prior we had a state trooper kill his girlfriend that was a police officer in the next town and then commit suicide. The murder and suicide took place in our town. I imagine the neighbor that called stated DH was a Police officer so it upped their responders. Dh stated good thing that he hadn't left for the game bc they would have tracked him down to make sure he was okay. Our older boys were also fighting earlier then the time they arrived so we think it was dd screaming and crying that made the neighbor call. And to top it off I thought the neighbor had a vision bc later that night while sleeping DH punched me in the side of my head while he was sleeping! He dreams lots of police work.

DH has been a police officer for almost 30 years and I dispatched for 8 years when we first met. We do have our fair share of stories. This one took the cake bc it happened to us. Every so often when the kids are fighting - one of them would say -- we should stop bf the police come!

My husband is a 911 Dispatcher. He is actually on duty right now. You would be amazed at the number of 911 calls they get from kids.

You would also be amazed at some of the calls from adults!! For example...a Mother called to ask my husband to talk to her 5 year old and tell him that he had to eat his vegetables! Completely true story! Even worse, after my DH went through the "This is an emergency line" spiel and disconnected the call, she called back two more times! They had to send a PD unit there to get her to stop. That only worked when they told her they would arrest her if she called again!

I give Dispatchers a ton of credit! They have more patience then I could ever have!!
