So disappointed in Miley Cyrus...

The problem is not what's "showing" (or not showing); it's the seductiveness of the entire image. She's wrapped in a bedsheet with a sultry look on her face for cryin' out loud. While it may be a beautiful, artistic photo, it simply is not appropriate for a 15yo girl.
Have you seen the pictures from the set? She is wearing long black pants outside, with a blanket wrapped 2-3 times around her body and covers everything below her collarbone.

Her look is not sultry at all. And if you go onto modern teen forums where her fans are they dont say that either. They say she looks like a "little vampire", "corps" "a ghost" or "that thing from The Lord of the Rings". Maybe older adults find this sexy or something because 15-18 year old guys dont and the girls described her in the responses above as well.

I think adults need to keep their opinions to themselves sometimes because honestly the adults care so much more about this over the fans, young and old. She said sorry to the parents and that will bite her in the butt with her older fan base, who will be her only fan base in 2-3 years. Her saying sorry was a bad choice now that she basically lied in her response to the photos, since photos of her on set showed a diffrent non-whorish Miley that all these adults are tryng to make her out to be.

Exactly.

My soon to be 15 yo DD said "she looks dead. She looks auful. What was she thinking." Nothing about seductiveness or the bare back. And that was all. She loves Miley & Hannah but a kid 'loving' something doesn't mean she's going to emulate that person. It's just the fad du jour and while Miley/Hannah has had more than her 15 minutes it's still just Hollywood 'stuff'.

I don't get it. She's fully clothed and fully covered IMHO--there are dresses with less back to them. She is pictured in a grown up magazine and not a child's mag. Why do people feel it is a celebs job to be a role model to their children? Without the hoopla I wouldn't have even see the photo since I am not a reader of Vanity Fair and my tween wouldn't be reading it either. How many 8-14 year olds read Vanity Fair?

The pictures from the set are irrelevant. They don't change the final image that is being published in the magazine and plastered all over the internet.

It is suggestive. The girl is wrapped in what appears to be a bedsheet with tousled hair, dark red lips and a soulful expression on her face. Photographs like this are meant to tell a story, and this photo's story is one that shouldn't be told about a girl so young. And honestly, I'd be more concerned about "older adults" finding my 15yo "sexy" than her peers. That's part of the reason it is so inappropriate.

Well it's hardly uncommon for children who are misbehaving to think that adults should stay out of it, but I strongly disagree. I think her apology was a good decision. I hope it was sincere and that this isn't just a calculated move intended to give her a more mature image, but the cynic in me suspects the latter. On the other hand, the fact that the photos from the set show such a different picture suggests that maybe this was a mistake. Part of what I find objectionable about this is what appears to be the post-processing done on the photo. While I think it was an error in judgment for a 15yo to be photographed wrapped in a bedsheet, I could still understand Miley and her parents being somewhat surprised by the final product.

My 8yo doesn't surf the internet unsupervised either, but she still heard about Vanessa Hudgens' little photo shoot. It's not that I think any celebrity is obligated to be a role model to my children, but I keep a pretty tight rein on the media content to which they are exposed, and if Miley Cyrus wants to go down this road, she may no longer be approved content in this house.

As for how much skin she exposed, that is not the issue. It's the suggestiveness of the image that I find objectionable. I certainly wouldn't allow my 15yo to be photographed in such a manner.

Well said.

Thank you, fitzperry. You have articulated my concerns much better than I can. It's the age of the person (15) that disturbs me--whether it's Miley Cyrus or Jane Doe. It's a highly suggestive pose that frankly isn't appropriate for ANY 15 year old.

As for the many comments people have made about "I've seen worse...look at the way teenagers dress, etc..."--I find that offensive as well. (And BTW, I wonder where they get all their fashion ideas and standards for what is "appropriate"?) As long as moms and dads find it o.k.--and often actually ENDORSE it, obviously the bar for good taste and appropriate modesty will continue to be lowered.

Just this morning, my 15-year old tried to leave the house looking a little inappropriate and my wife confronted her. My daughter may not like it and ultimately go behind our back (i.e. just change back to less appropriate attire once she reaches school), but at least she knows that we don't approve of it. We also talk to her about WHY we don't like it--the message it sends, the trouble it can invite, etc. She can reject 100 percent of our beliefs on this subject, but that's not going to stop us from expressing our concerns as parents. Dismiss us as "out of touch, redneck parents" if you like--and I'm sure most of you will--but we're not ready to join the "anything/everything goes as long as it makes you happy" movement.

I must say there is a real overreaction to this

you are not the first to pass this way, nor shall you be the last.....
It just occurred to me where this comes from. I feel like I'm back in Epcot's Norway again. Thanks!

Oh, I actually liked the pic. I mean I agree, it's not like a sears portrait that will proudly be displayed on your mantel or sent out to the grandparents, but I have say if Annie Leibovitz wanted to take my picture I would jump all over that. :thumbsup2 She's an amazing photographer!

Beautifully said!! My friend has a bumper sticker that says 'modest is hottest' which I like. This pic of Miley, for a hollywood girl, isn't bad, but Hollywood's standards are so far below mainstream, or what I like to think of mainstream:), America. As parents we need to set the standards not Hollywood, right?:) It's just like the little bit of controversy with the High School Musical girl last summer and the 'naughty' pics she sent her boyfriend. It happens and we as parents have to be able to openly discuss with our kids our own standards and what we fully expect out of them.

Kids need to rebel against authority. It's a normal part of growing up and asserting one's independence. But a corollary to that is that they need standards to rebel against. Unfortunately those standards keep getting lower and lower and it takes progressively more to get the shock value that the rebellious kid is seeking. Call me out of touch too, but those standards are not getting lowered in my house either.

As a parent would I personally allow to have my 15 year old photographed that way.. uh no. However, after looking at the pics and the others that are "just so awful" I haven't seen anything that I would really raise such a fuss over. I feel the whole thing is being blown way out of proportion. You can't see anything and I bet she is wearing something under that sheet. She is a 15 year old girl.. I know I did lots of stupid things at 15 and I bet lots of other girls did too..SO what she kissed her friend on the cheek..whoopie. I am amazed they haven't moved on to someone far more interesting because she seems like a normal girl to me. I know she is a role model but even so i dont think she has done anything so wrong as to lose her hannah montana show.

Miley rocks! She isn't exposed in her picture, she's covered just as much as she would be in a swimsuit! What's the big deal!? She's a role model so she's not allowed to pose a certain way!? Remember, "Nobody's Perfect!" :)

I just think it's funny that suddenly Disney doesn't like Annie Leibovitz--are they gonna do any more of her "celebs dressed up as Disney characters" photos? Personally I was shocked that Cinderella and Snow White have cleavage.

If the family had just stood by their decision on the photos and insisted that they are artistic and tasteful, there would have been much less controversy. By distancing themselves from what was produced and placing blame on everyone but themselves, they have fanned the very flames that are now burning them. Silly.

Nothing this child star does is not completely planned far in advance. They know that Miley is growing up. She has to be marketed to a new audience to keep the millions flowing in. They are just positioning here for the future earnings.

And by the way, many, many (if not most) 15 year olds are having sex already....

I agree 110%

All I have to say is that these are typical photos that Anne Leibowitz takes... Everyone LOVED her photos from last year when she dolled up Hollywood actors and actresses as Disney animated characters... Like Scarlet Johannson as Cinderella...

Her pics are done in this way... Not saying tasteful or not... But there is justa general 'oversexing' of america's kids right now... Just yesterday I saw a girl, probably no older than 15 wearing a t shirt that said 'Nice piece of a**' I thought, 'Your parents would be shocked.'
