We went to Sam's on Friday and he bought an Olympus E-410 with a 14-42mm lens and a 40-150 mm lens. So far he has just been kind of putzing around with it in the house.

We leave for WDW in 17 days. I'm not sure how much he will actually learn by the time we get there, but I hope he can get some good shots.

Anybody else have a camera like this? Any hints? He has been wanting a dSLR for months and I am hoping he won't lose interest in it now that he has it!

A dSLR takes some time getting used to, if you are used to pocket cameras.

However, a great feature for beginners is featured on most of them: The Automatic Programme. Set it there, and you will most likely get at least as good photos as with a compact camera.

The 14-42 mm lens is good for the overall shots (wide angle). And the 40-150 mm is good for more usual photo shoots. On a trip I would probably only bring the 40-150 mm.

A little tip: when changing lenses keep the camera pointing down, that way less dust will find it's way into the camera house.

Hope it helps!

I have the 510 with those lenses, basically the same camera just a bit larger and with image stabilization. A quick tip.. if he is going to be shooting JPGs, my opinion is the best image quality is found with the noise filter set to low, or some others would say turn it completely off and set sharpness to -2.

Not sure what other tips to give besides read the manual, learn as much about exposure as possible, and practice practice practice :) Any other questions, feel free to ask away.

Remember that Olympus DSLRs use the 4/3rds format which is a 2x crop factor, so the 14-42 lens is 28-84 equivalent in 35mm terms. Slightly wide at the short end but it's really just a standard zoom, and the 40-150 is a medium telephoto zoom. I used the 14-42 much more @ WDW than the 40-150 besides Animal Kingdom of course.

Thanks! I will have him read your replies.:)

I am still just on "point and shoot". I am feeling very proud of myself for moving beyond disposable cameras.;) I have a little Canon something-or-other that suits me fine. DS will inherit DH's Nikon Coolpix.

DH has been practicing a bit with the new camera, and he watched the instructional DVD last night. With all of the things to take pics of at WDW this time of year I am sure he will get LOTS of practice in a couple of weeks. Hopefully he will be pleased with the results and want to continue, or at least be inspired to keep learning so the pics from our next trip will be better than whatever he gets this time around!:rotfl2:

We're at AKL for this trip but we spend most of our time in the parks. Not sure how many animals he will photograph because we'll only be at AK for one morning, and most of the time we'll be at the Lodge it will be dark.
