I am not sure where to post this, but I am going to have to cancel my free dining trip for POR on Sep.8-12! My DH has been feeling pretty bad lately, and very run down. We thought it was due to him traveling so much with his job lately. Well. he went to the Dr., and his high blood pressure is not being helped by the medication, plus, he has diabetes! And it's pretty bad. His blood sugar was over 300. Well, the Dr. put him on 4 new prescription medicines, plus a baby asprin daily. He started all this on Tues. and is now feeling a little better, but it will be awhile before he is alot better. Plus, they put him on a diet (which he needed), but I can't take him to WDW and tempt him with all that food. It just wouldn't be right. And we have AP's to DL in Ca., so we can go there again and the trip will be ALOT cheaper, even cheaper than free dining since we can get free rooms too (since he travels alot, he gets alot of hotel points and FF miles). He is feeling pretty down about all this, his mom has diabetes, and his sister had it and actually died due to diabetic complications. I am worried about him, but I know that if he can stay on the diet, and not miss pills, he will be ok. It will just be a hard road for him and I want to try to make it as easy as I can, hence cancelling the free dining pkg. Maybe by next year he will have all this under control and we can try then if it is offered. Well, sorry if this was the wrong place to put this! And please, if anyone knows much about a "diabetic diet", I am looking for as much info as I can get, especially about eating out, since he lives in a hotel room from Mon-Fri. every week!!! TIA!!!:)

Bad news is cancel your WDW trip.
Best news is your DH has you around to support him! :thumbsup2
It would be very depressing to have to cancel that trip. But you have a great attitude about it. :flower3:

I can understand how you feel, but I think you're being very supportive and caring, and that will go far toward helping your DH.

My sister recently got diagnosed with diabetes, but she has a lot of other health issues, too, so her diet is very controlled. I'm sure if you do a search on Google or on medical sites, you can find some good ideas for helping him stick to his diet. There are many more restaurants with diabetic-friendly menus these days. I wish you the best!

First of all (and I mean this in a kind way:) ) don't think about what he can't have think about what he can. I have been a diabetic for 39 years, in addition I can not eat wheat. I found myself in the trap of looking at what I couldn't eat and then suddenly I decided it was time to look at what I could eat. I don't follow a diabetic diet because I am on an insulin pump, but be aware that he will burn up plenty of blood sugar by just walking. If he has a meter, tell him to test his blood. I can't believe how many type 2 diabetics are not told to test. They did it to my mother in law, they just gave her pills. It turned out she was getting too much of her pill and blood sugar dropped. Having a meter will allow him to see just how much the food is making his blood sugar rise or drop and if he may need a little extra food to cover his activity. Type 2 diabetics blood sugar can drop just as much as Type 1. Tell him to be brave, once he gets his sugars straight he will feel like a whole new person. You can call and mention on your ADR's that you need a diabetic diet. You would be surprised to find out how wonderful they are with special diets. Don't give up, your husband can do this and so can you.:thumbsup2

Wow! Your DH is very lucky to have you as his wife. You have a fantastic attitude!! Next year he will feel so much better and it will make your vacation that much more enjoyable.

Did your DH's Dr. give him info on hospital diet programs for diabetics? They have educational classes that they offer that explain to the diabetic (and the spouse- if they want to attend) what to eat, how to monitor blood glucose levels etc. Your insurance should pay for these programs too! Excercise is a great way to get your blood glucose readings down. While 300 is definetly high, he should be able to get it into a good range pretty quick!

Good luck with all this. It can be overwhelming in the beginning, but it's like anything else, once you become familiar with it, it's not so hard.

Next year will probably be much better. I have a friend who is a childhood diabetic and in 2001, her and her husband traveled to WDW with us. She did fine; I think once you get used to the diet, it won't be that difficult. I feel bad for you as I know you were looking forward to the trip but your husband's health is more important. Best of luck to you and him!! You will be in my prayers.

Sorry you had to cancel, but next year when your dh is feeling more up to it your family will enjoy it much more!
Sounds like your dh has a very supportive wife!:cheer2:

It is sad to have to cancel, but I don't think he can be ready by Sep. 8th. He is physically worn ot by the diabetes, htn, and all the stress of his job, plus travelling too. I would rather wait and go when he can have a fun time too. He suffered a heat stroke several years ago, and because of that, he cannot take heat alot. I thought that we would be ok, since alot of the focus of this trip would be the great TS places we would be trying (usually we only eat at 1 TS our entire trip), and we would be spending alot of time in the restaurants. But, now we cannot do that.By next year he should be used to the :diet" and have all his meds lined up and his sugar level should be equalized. I really think it would be better for him if we wait.
Thanks for the advice about the classes. I don't think we have them at our local hospital, I have worked there for 17 years, and have never heard of any, but we are a fairly small community, so I am going to check in the larger city that is about 50 miles from us!!!! Thanks again!!!

My wife is a diabetes educator. I saw your post and had to register to give you some info. If you cannot find a class you can purchase a book/dvd combo called "Diabetes mythes, misconceptions, and big fat lies" It is an overview of the class. You can also ask your doctor to refer you to a "dietician for medical nutrition therapy". That is how the perscription must read she tells me. Also free information available here at The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).

If we can do anything else for you feel free to send me an email. Good luck and test frequently. It's the best way to know how he is doing.

scanmom...hoping your DH will be feeling better soon:) You are awesome1

also, lovely to read some supportive and thoughtful posts in a thread!! There are some great folks here:)

mb1976- thanks so much, I am going to get that book/dvd right away! I think with him having to travel so much that a book would be a great way for him/us to learn all we need to know. And I will ask his Dr. about getting a nutritionist on board! another problem right now is that DH has been going to a Dr. office with about 30 DR.'s. Everytime he goes he ends up seeing a different Dr. This last time is the 1st time a DR. has followed thru. In fact, he did all the testing about 6 weeks ago, and we never heard anything, so now when he went back, they told him about all this. The Dr. he saw this time told him that he should have been called last time, since the tests were indicative then of diabetes, and he had htn then as well. The Dr. this time was actually pretty honest and told DH that he needed to see someone in another office, that this one was letting him fall through the cracks, and he needs to be with pa Dr. that he can see every time..not a different one each visit. So, I am going to make him an appt. at my Dr. -the one me and both my DD's use. I love him, and he is very easy to get into. Plus if he is on vacation or something(rare), there are only 3 other Dr.'s in the group, and they are all great too! So now, before we can see the nutritionist etc, DH has to go see the NEW Dr. --that is why the book will come in handy- I want to get started
ASAP in getting DH as healthy as can be! Thanks for all the help... and if anyone has anymore, I welcome it!!! And yes, I have said before, all the people here are super, and you can ALWAYS get help at the DIS, wheather it is about WDW, or anything else!!!! There is not a greater group of people anywhere!!!! And-mb1976, welcome to the boards, I hope you find as much pleasure here as I have!!!!! :grouphug:
