So all this talk about the "Give a Day" promotion

I ask this in all honestly:

How many would do some of these things if there was no material reward?

I know I would. I do volunteer - not what you'd call regularly, but part of that is because I didn't really realize just how many opportunities there are in my community. Now that I've done the GAD thing, I've found a lot more things I can do in my own community and I plan on.

I know at least 2 other families who never would have done anyhting in the first place had it not been for the GAD promotion, and now plan on continuing.

We did Boy Scouts scouting for food which we do every year anyway. We also volunteer with 4-H, local animal shelter, schools and church, so getting the day was just a nice little bonus for us.

DD and I are making blankets for project Linus and I never even thought to do it for GAD. She also raises money for the Hooved Animal Humane Society and Save A Pet and works on the community service club at school. She is almost 10 yo and I have been engraining service since she was tiny.

As a girl scout leader to 3 troops and a service unit manager for 3 towns I do my than my share of volunteering that actually costs me money. The Disney give a day promo is perk. We are making 15 pillow cases so that is costing me also.

Before GAD, I did donate to the local food bank. But after GAD, I know now that they have a couple different programs such as backpacks for underprivledged kids. The volunteers fill back packs at the food bank, then the kids can have food on the weekends. DD11 and I havent volunteered yet, we will in a few weeks.

And to be honest, there are a lot of things I didn't know existed, volunteer wise in the area until GAD. So, even after we do our day of service, Dd and I are planning on regularly doing Project Linus and see what other volunteer things dd and I could do together.

I have been sewing for www.conkerrcancer.com for a couple years now. I was surprised to see that one of the chapters was part of GAD.

I volunteer 2 days a week with a horseback riding program for special needs kids, and I've been doing this for almost 7 years now. So, with or without GAD, I'd still be volunteering. It's hard for us to participate in the program because all of our volunteers have to have training before they can volunteer with the kids, so it's eliminated a lot of people that were hoping to show up for a few hours and be on their way and get a free Disney ticket.

I volunteer on a regular basis. I probably wouldn't do what I'm doing, but I still would volunteer w/my sons school, sports etc.

The things I can do w/my son are very limited, we are making build a bears that will be given to DCF in MA for when kids visit their parents. We are paying 12.99 each to make the bear.

I'm planning on doing some blankets for a GAD project and the donating the tix. We have no plans to go this year, but I think making the blankets will be a fun family project, and it's win-win with donating the tickets. I wouldn't have found Project Linus without the GAD web site!

As for donating time, I have done Habitat for Humanity, among others, previously through our church. So yes, I do it whether there is a "carrot" or not.

I already do. I'm in Disney VoluntEars and when I do my day of service, I'm donating my ticket.

I do hope, though, that this program has opened people's eyes to the joy of giving. I seriously KNOW that I get joy out of it.

I sit on two not for profit boards, I volunteer for three different organizations (different events) and donate a significant amount of money over the course of the year. We haven't decided if we'll take part in the Give a Day program, we don't need incentives to volunteer.

Hiya! Me too. I am the head coach for our county's special olympic equestrian team. We have practice 2 days a week and I also volunteer several additional days during the month to fund raise for the team. While I probably qualify for GAD, and we are going to WDW this fall, it never occurred to me to try to get the free tix.

On behalf of all the riding programs like mine...THANK YOU, for all of your hard work and dedication to the riders and horses!!

I did a day @ Habitat for Humanity this past Friday, but completely forgot about the promotion. Don't even know if it qualifies.

I think there are those that volunteer anyway and if there is a reward, super...but more importanly, if the reward spurs on a new interest in volunteering for some, then that's even better!

I have been making blankets for Project Linus for years. This year I am involved in makeing pillowcases for Conkerrcancer. I have been involved with Boy Scoutrs for a number of years at a local level and now at the district level. I also do volunteer work with my church. I am involved with the local high school's costumes for their annual musical.

I am not planning to go to DW this year.

I think for people that are doing this for a first time, it's giving them a major opprotunity to actually see what there is out there. And with the Hands on Network, they're making it really easy for signing up and participating.

I'm sure there will be lots of people that are solely doing this for the tickets, and another large share that will continue. And well there's the ones that have done it for a long time before and will continue for a long time afterwards.

Have to say it saddens me to read about the people who are taking advantage of this program (not really performing as they should) just to get the free Disney tickets.. Can't remember if it was on the CB, BB, or Themes and Parks Board - but I guess some people are really taking "advantage"..

Come to think of it, it's pretty sad that the only way to get a family to volunteer or do community work is to bribe them with free Disney tickets..

I agree with you C.Ann. If you're going to do good, do good. Don't do it so you can get something free out of it, unless you were going to do it anyway. I am sure there are lots of people that volunteer without rewards, and just added GAD on as an extra project. I think that's great. But the people that just do the bare minimum and complain that the program doesn't help them enough, they're wrong. I might get flamed for that, but I don't care.
