Snowed in, tell me

I live in Ohio and we are snowed in with only about 6-8 inches and I have a friend from upstate NY who thinks it is ridiculous that things come to a standstill in such little snow around here.

I know that places like Ontario and Michigan and Denver handle snow like that overnight and it is no big deal but that is because it happens often. Snow like this in Ohio and DC, VA and MD are not common and it would be a foolish budget item to keep the resources on hand to handle it overnight.

We get a big snow maybe once or twice a year (and that is 6 - 8 inches) so it isn't a big deal if we shut down for a day or two. But in places where it happens all the time - shutting down your city that often would be really bad.

So give us a break - we are actually being budget minded by not keeping unneccessary resources on hand.

We are all recovering from being sick at our house so I see a lot of games and movies today!

We live in Gloucester County (South Jersey) and we too are buried! Not sure how much snow we have. Our plans obviously got cancelled and now we will attend a birthday party we couldn't make before the snow. Luckily, it's right next door so no traveling!!!

We're in Gloucester County too & shoveling away. :dance3:
Our DD's fourth birthday party was supposed to be today, but we rescheduled.
We're watching Cinderella right now. We'll be baking & playing today.

we are in Northern Virginia. Today is a PJ day, kids and DH are playing PS games and maybe some Wii. I am doing laundry, playing on the internet and planning to read a book in front of a roaring fire. If it every stops snowing will go sledding etc. No shoveling until later today!

We are snowed in too, here in the PA, DE, NJ tri-state area. It's still coming down. Yesterday I stocked up on the hot chocolate and movies. We'll be cooking some chili and corn bread later.

We'll need something warm after shoveling what is close to 18' of snow. So glad I'm not working today.:yay:

As soon as I shovel out the car around noon I am headed to ski slopes...Son 5 will try snow boarding for the 1st time...

In Ohio here too. Couldn't get the back door open this morning to let the dog out. Had to go outside and shovel my way around to the door. I'm supposed to go pick-up my brother and his gf and my new nephew from the hospital to come home today. I won't be able to get out of my drive though until my DH comes home and blows it out. We have a wrecker company here in NW Ohio and he's been out all night working. Around 7am he was wenching out all of our townships plows which were all stuck on the same road after trying to help get each other out.

We're in the DC area, and have about 23" so far. We're still in a band to heavy snow for a while, so who knows what our total will be.

I'm not a snow person, but my kids sure are. I just went out with them to take some pictures of the kids trying to shovel. It was quite a hoot to watch our dogs try to make their way out this morning.

So, I will spend my day e-mailing out our pictures and touching base with those who are concerned about how we're doing (my family in FL has already called to tease us).

Other than that, I have ingredients to make cookies and hot chocolate. I think we'll stream some movies and cuddle up by the fire.

Since the kids are all outside, I'm enjoying having adult t.v. on. Nothing exciting...just watching the blizzard 2010 coverage which is on all day.

I've got tons I should do today, but I love to just cancel plans and hang out with the family on snow days:goodvibes

Thank goodness we still have electricity! I'm hearing about a lot of areas who have lost it.

Enjoy the snow!

I'm in PA, tri state area. Not happy about the snow! I'm waiting for it to stop then i'm going to try to dig my car out. My kids stay with their father Saturday night through to Sunday so if I can get out I will! I would like to go see Dear John tonight. For now though i'm online and cleaning the house.

I left VA yesterday at noon and drove to PA through D.C. and Baltimore. Got here about 5 p.m. and now I'm figuring out the best way to get back home tomorrow afternoon. I have several different routes planned out. I dug my SUV out this morning to go to Sheetz and fill up with gas and get breakfast. Other than that my only plan is to take a nap while my bf is working until this afternoon! :)

VA here snowed yesterday and topped off with freezing rain/sleet and back to snow today.
Yesterday we baked cookies, buffale chicken ranch dip and taco soup. DH also made a breakfast casserole for breakfast this morning.
Today it will be rice krispie treats (in mickey shape and chocolate covered I hope) and hot chocolate with our cookies from yesterday.
We will definitely diet this spring!

Maybe a movie later and always disboards!
I love true snow days - days where no one has to or can go anywhere and the fridge is full!

Honestly? I'm laughing at all of the people and their 2 whole feet of snow! We live on the south shore of Lake Ontario and you don't know snow, until you've had a lake effect snow storm!

Hi. I'm right outside of Philadelphia and we are approaching 20" of snow with two or three more hours of snowfall predicted. The difference between here and other areas is that the municipal services are not prepared for this level of snow (this will be the second or third biggest snowfall EVER in Philadelphia and, since we had a big snow fall in December, we are already at the most snow in one winter EVER). We just don't have the trucks or equipment and the city is seriously running out of money to remove snow. I have a big driveway that we can't shovel so we are snowed in until the plow guy gets here, probably sometime on Sunday.

Anyway, I've been awake and working since early this AM but my kids just woke up. We are going to have a leisurely breakfast while we watch the snow fall. We will probably bake today and watch a movie or two. My older kid will want to play in the snow, but since our temperatures are in the 20s, that probably won't last long. I hear it isn't good packing snow anyway.

I hope everyone in the Delaware, Maryland, Jersey, Philadelphia area has a safe, cozy day.

Seriously, this is not a personal attack, but we are so used to the snow up here, it is kind of funny to watch everyone freak out!

Snow storms are uncommon in many parts of the US and the cities are simply ill equipped to handle snow. We live in Philly and I heard our snow budget for the year was used for the snow storm before Christmas, now this one is supposed to be bigger. They are saying this will be the largest snow fall on record for the area and I can assure you they don't even touch the city streets. In a few days they will be a sheet of ice 2" thick if they don't take care of it (which they won't). We live in the city and the ice, coupled with cars parked on either side of the street, plus very narrow streets to begin with and it is a little frightening.

Today, we are sitting tight and hibernating. I have made soft pretzels, pizza dough, pumpkin challah and I have promised the kids we will make flubber and home made play doh. I like days like these where i have to be no where and can just hang out with the family.

Have fun everyone!

Yeah, I was listening to the AM news radio station yesterday and they said that this snow storm will cut into VA's maintenance budget as they've already spent their snow removal budget for the year. That means what little repairs they do to the roads already will be even less this year. We just don't have the trucks or equipment and budget, like many other states that are getting this snow, to handle it.

Stopped snowing here with a foot, but the drifts are 3 foot in some areas. At least our power is back on (only lost it for 4 hours this time, we played card games by flashlight) and everyone is safely home so all is good. One of my labs went out and totally walked over the area we shoveled out for them and jumped all over the drifts....now she's limping with her back leg so hopefully she just sprained a muscle and will be okay after some rest.

Not lived up to the hype?! Are you serious?! I live in Howard County and we have 30inches. We are doing nothing today but relaxing. I doubt the kids will be back to school before Wednesday :(

I live in Howard County too and my guess is that the kids will be off all week. In Feb 2003, we came back from our DCL vacation on Saturday night and it snowed 20+ inches that weekend. The kids were off school all week. I predict the same this time. Especially since the kids were off Mon-Wed before Christmas when the roads were cleared by Mon PM. :confused3

We are in Baltimore, MD. Right now we have 24 inches and still going. They expect between 20 - 30 inches. I'm guessing no school for Monday, LOL. We are spending the day cleaning, dinner is already in the crock pot. DH is going to shovel out the cars soon. Just a lazy day.

We've got a pretty good snow going on. It's about 6 inches, so we aren't really "snowed in"....but I've decided we don't have anywhere we need to be. :cool1:

DD9 is reading, DS5 is playing with his cars, I'm on the Disboards and DH is working. For the weekend, we have the following plans:

Clean and laundry
Plan Disney vacation
Work on scrapbooks
Play outside
Make valentine boxes for school
Play Wii
Roast marshmallows in the fireplace before camping out in the basement with a movie and every blanket in the house.

I was released from the hospital less than two weeks ago for bad pneumonia and hubby was very sick at same time. He isn't feeling any better and has to shovel us out. Feel so bad that I can't help , but I'm keeping kids away so he can do his thing uninterrupted!! Done all my chores and we're being lazy here too!! I work in a supermarket and THANK GOD I was off Thurs, Fri, and Sat. I'm sure it was mobbed!!!

Also here in Baltimore, at 24". It's seriously not the snow that worries me...that's just fine. It's the threat of loss of power and knowing if we lose it, it's going to be out for days. My dad is in Western MD, I am sure he's looking at the 30" easily, which worries me more b/c of his age (trying to clear the snow.) As others said, we usually don't see much snow at all. I complain annually about how little use my kids get out of their boots & snowpants....nevermore! As a kid in the mountains of Western MD, this was pretty normal weather, but as an adult waiting patiently for a good stretch of weather so the crew can replace her roof, I've had enough.

I am heading out for my turn to shovel. DH is working on our basement remodel. The kids are hanging out, will go out soon. Probably a little RockBand and cocktails later, preferably with neighbors who can walk.

Voorhees NJ checking in!

And it's still snowing - DH opened his early birthday present as he loves 'shoveling snow!' under protest (a toro 221 powerclear which wasn't inexpensive) - but it only went about 3 ft. and stopped working (the snow was 12 +) - the snow here is heavy - but are we doing something wrong? Now it seems we have about 18 -20" - Any ideas? Not doing much here otherwise - just staying in and watching the tv :happytv:

Thanks!
