Which is easier, snowboarding or skiing?

My DD 14 wants to go this week. She has no experience with either.

Thanks

DS10 (who is not what you would call "athletic") would say "SNOWBOARDING".

We went this weekend - I was amazed at the amount of teenage girls in the classes! Guess the Olympics showed them it's a girl's sport too. A lot of them were boarding pretty good by mid-morning!

If she's ever skateboarded, the answer is clearly Snowboarding. It's a lot easier and you don't have to worry about keeping your feet perfectly parallel!

Wow, I totally disagree. I think skiing is way easier. Youre gonna fall a lot your first time and its really awkward to get up with a snowboard, its harder to get on and off the lifts and tow ropes, and usually you have to buckle and unbuckle strap on them, while with skis you can step them on and off. However,if she starts with snowboard, most places will let her trade it in for skis if it doesnt work for her and not charge extra.

We just dealt with the same issue. DD (18) was competing at the Western National 4-H Roundup in Denver in January, and one of their day trips was a choice of skiing or snowboarding at Breckenridge.

Those with experience advised her that skiing was easier, but she really wanted to snowboard. While she did turn out to be the only girl in her class (except for the instructor who was also female), she had a wonderful time and was really glad she didn't go with the rest of her team (who all skied). I think she made it to level 3 (I think that's right), and she can't wait to go again sometime.

Have a great time!

DD & DS have done both and they both agree that skiing is much easier. DD is now a snowboarder and she loves it, but she said skiing was easier to learn.

Skiing is easier but IMHO snowboarding is cooler!!! My youngest daughter skis my oldest kids snowboard. They all have fun. I sit in the ski lodge and wait for them while my husband takes them down the slopes.

I totally agree with everything you just said!!!! I have done both although I am mostly a skier and have been for over 20 years.
When it came to learning snowboarding I spent more time on my butt than I ever have skiing. Now having said that...seem the learning curve was a bit quicker on the snowboarding though.

But seeing that the olympics have been on and your DD is 14, I'm sure the coolness factor is going to be with the snowboarding.
Oh and one more thing...I see more female snowboarders get hit on than female skiers...lol

I'd have her snowboard, and then she can learn to surf too, although the foot placement is different.

If your daughter skateboards, she will like snowboarding. If not, she may be more successful at skiing.
DSs 11 & 12 tried both for the first time this winter. First trip out they tried snowboarding - Dad thought they find it more exciting. DS12 is atheletic & a quick study. DS11 is less of a risk taker. Anyway they both took a lesson & succeeded at snowboarding but it didn't seem natural to either of them by the end of the day. A couple of weeks later DH took them back to the slopes and showed them how to turn and stop on skis. In no time they looked like old pros. We went back last week and they both choose to ski. It really made my week to see the confidence that skiing gave my youngest - he didn't hesitate to ride the lifts and come downhill by himself - even when DH and his brother were in the lodge. My oldest went on a weekend Ski/boarding trip with scouts and choose to ski all weekend. By Sunday the 11 & 12 year olds were in the terrian park :cool2:  - all on skis, none on boards.

See my siggie below! Actually, sorry to say that it's a slam to the snowboarders!

Seriously, though ... snowboarders have been the bane of my existence this year. I just cannot seem to coexist peacefully w/them on the slopes! I've had 2 snowboarders cut across the backs of my skis b/c they weren't watching where they were going and/or were out of control. My neighbor's little girl (age 8), a skier, was standing at the bottom of the hill, close to the lift line and got plowed over by a snowboarder and wound up w/a separated shoulder. Snowboarder came up from behind the child and just plowed her down. Worst part? The kid took off. No "I'm sorry" or "Are you ok" or "Do you need help?". Niiiiiice.

So many snowboarders in this area are out-of-control kids who have managed to teach themselves. They don't edge, make turns, pay attention, etc. They just bomb down the hill and can barely stop themselves. Many resorts here (inc. mine) have had several injuries due to snowboarders not being able to control their speed or being able to stop.

BTW -- why must you snowboarders stop in the middle of the hills to sit and chat?! Can't you do it at the bottom or on the chairlift?!

PS -- Make sure your child wears a helmet, regardless of whether she chooses skiing or snowboarding!!!!!!!! Very, very important!!!!!!!!

Yep most of them(not all) have attitudes that suck. Some child was injured right past a jump. Ski patrol asked me to block off the jump so they could put the child on a strecher. Well I figured by standing at the front of the jump and sticking my ski's in the ground that snowboarders would try a diff jump. Wrong!!!! They went around me or came at the jump from the side. You could clearly see that there was someone injured on the other side but they just kept hitting the jump and turning away from the accident at the last minute. When I tried to tell them to go around I got..Yeah Right...and the usual..Blank Blank you Blank! Fortunately more ski patrol showed up and finally blocked off the hill, threatening to start ripping off their lift tags.

True....true and true!!!!
I too have had problems with snowboarders doing the same thing. I had one go flying past me then cut right in front of me and fall. It was all I could do to ski and keep from putting my ski through his skull.

Ohhhh that is sooo true. I remember one time there one jump I liked to go over and these kids all stopped in front of it sat down and chatted in front of it. Making all others go around them. WTH?

I ski and snowboard. But if she has good balance on her toes and heels she should be good with snowboarding. If her balance is more in the arches of her foot-go for skiing.

Either way, niether is impossible and can be learned. Even if it takes time.

Yes. Make sure she wears a helmet. Last week I taught a girl that went down once without a helmet and ended up with a broken nose.(She also didnt have an instructor). And HELMETS ARE COOL THESE DAYS. ;)

^^Hey. Don't be hatin' snowboarders. :cool2: We all ain't like that. It sounds liek you ran into the :smokin: ones. :cool2:
