Snoring question???

Both of us were referred to a sleep specialist for sleep studies to check for sleep apnea, a dangerous condition. A change of sleep position was enough to virtually eliminate the snoring of one of us, and the CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine (which works by blowing air up the nose and opening the breathing passages) eliminated the sleep apnea (and snoring) of the other. It also provides restful sleep and lowers the chance of several nasty outcomes.

I was going to suggest this, you beat me to it!

CPAP!!!!! I am a sleep tech and see this every night!! Most sprays and strips dont work (unless it is allergy related). CPAP and change in sleeping position are the only sure thing to get ride of snoring! The mouth guards 90% of the time dont work. Some times it lessens the volume of the snore but does not help with the apnea very much! Apnea can lead to some very nasty outcome! over all reduction in the quality of your life, Memory loss, depression, Sleepy driving, Strokes, heart attacks, high blood pressure, even death!! Most people that I see are coming to me because of that loud annoying snore that their family cant stand but most of the time that snore is like a nightly alarm going off basically telling you you are not breathing. I see some patients that i am shocked that the apnea hasnt killed them yet. It can get VERY severe!! Have all of your snoring loved ones go in for a sleep study!! it can save their lives and make them more enjoyable for you!! Awake and asleep!!

PS in no way am I saying ALL snorers have apnea BUT if you have apnea your gonna snore!

Yep-the only thing that worked for us was for my husband to go to a sleepp specialist. The CPAP machine may have saved his life-not because of the apnea, but because I was going to kill him if he didn't do something!

He tried everything (strips, sprays, position change) and nothing worked. The CPAP worked a miracle.

What is involved in arranging this and is this something covered by your insurance?

There's a Cpap machine kiosk in my mall... I wonder how much they go for... I had a sleep study years ago and I don't have apnea, but I snore 9 nites out of 10... Would a Cpap machine help if I DONT have apnea?

Interesting :)

Most likely you'll need to see your GP and have him/her order it. Mine was covered by insurance but that is something you will have to check on with your own insurance.

Breathe Right Snore Relief throat spray. Seems to work for us. DH snores very loud when he's overtired from either the vacation drive or a "long" day in the parks. He says it doesn't taste the greatest but me and my 2 DD's say, "Too Bad!" (DD uses earplugs as well!)

I wondered if this stuff worked. I'm putting it on my shopping list! Oh, do you mind my asking how long a spray bottle lasts. We will be in Disney for 10 days so I wanna make sure I have enough to last the entire trip.

Honestly it depends on WHY the person is snoring. Even though he is thin my husband has excess skin on the back of the throat which causes him to snore terribly. None of the over the counter products work nor would they because for him it has to do with too much tissue in his throat. I hate traveling with him because of the snoring issues. At home when he snores I put him in another room. :) The only solution is for him to have surgery and he refuses to have the surgery.

Used to keep my wife awake at night and opted for a sleep study. I now use a CPAP machine at night. Took some getting used to, but I don't have to worry about my wife smothering me deep in the middle of the night. :)

Actually, that's not true either. About 25% of men and 50% of women who have apnea don't snore.

It took me 17 years to get diagnosed because my doctors kept telling me that if I didn't snore, I didn't have apnea. Been on CPAP for 3.5 years now and it's WONDERFUL.

Yes your insurence should cover it. Just talk to your PCP about the issues and they should have a sleep lab they refer their patients to. good luck!

Yes it can be used to get rid of snoring even if you dont have apnea. You would however need to have someone titrate the pressure or you might be able to pick a random setting to get rid of the snoring and see if it works.

You may may snore that only a snore mic with pick up one which only picks up by vibrations. I cant say for sure that you dont snore because I have never had you in my lab you could be a rare exception but I have been doing this for 5 yrs and I have never had a person have apnea and not snore so those figures are waaay off.

Not long ago there was a thread about this very thing and several people suggested and praised PureSleep mouthguards. I thought it was worth trying so got one (both my husband and I snore, but he wasn't willing to try one). It was miraculous! My snoring stopped the first night...or at least that is what I'm told. Also, I wasn't sleepy at 2 pm the next afternoon. I've had it for about 3 weeks and now DH wants one so we ordered another.

I was glad to see on here someone mentioned about making your own. I'm going to try that when this one wears out, because they are about $70. If I can make them out of athletic mouthguards that would be great.

BTW, we had tried the strips, sprays, etc. and nothing worked before this.

We just have a little bottle we bought at Walmart and it has lasted a long time. One bottle will definately last throughout your entire trip. It has helped us make it through the nights. I can't say DH "doesn't" snore at all but it has lessened the "volume" so that we can all sleep peacefully. Hope it works for you.

The plural of anecdote is not data.

My data comes from PubMed.

Ok, this is a sore subject in my household.

I am a VERY light sleeper...I admit it! BUT...DH is a VERY loud snorer. We have the Pure Sleep mouthguard and it only *lessens* his snoring. Earplugs don't work for me...they don't block out that huge rattling snore!

Oh, and everyone swears you cannot snore if you sleep on your side. MY DH SNORES ON HIS SIDE! I swear! (BTW, he is overweight, but only by maybe 20 lbs.)

We just returned from WDW and on this trip I did what I have done on many previous trips. Are you ready for this????

I take the comforter and a pillow and I sleep on the floor in the bathroom!

Can you believe that? I am a light sleeper, but I sleep WAY better on a hard tile floor than in the same room as DH.

Sad, huh?
