Snakes?????

Ive personally NEVER seen a snake at the Fort. Common sense would say that in such a large, forest like area...there HAS to be some around, but its apparent that Disney keeps them in check.

I have seen gators...but again...its Florida, they are SUPPOSED to be there!! But, Disney is very good about keeping their guests safe...dont sweat it...live a little. Wildlife is worthy life.

We don't have any snakes here at all. I've never seen a snake outside of a zoo of some sorts. Definitely no alligators.

Yes, the snakes are there. VERY few of them are dangerous. And, they're not just at the Fort.

But remember, sunburn is a much bigger risk than wildlife. Just watch where you're walking and, as Pete says, stay out of the lakes. You'll be fine.

Not meaning to be rude or crude,, but we have lived in and been to bout 1/2 of the US states, and I have seen snakes in most of them. Snakes are just kind of a part of life,,, snakes really don't wanna have anymore to do with you than you do with them.

But I'm tell'n you,,its them dang beer drinking otters thats the problem!

Otters are fine as long as you don't steal their beer. The biggest,most deadly snakes in the US aren't even in a state thogh Frank - they're in DC.

They are joking with you a bit, but the snake pictures Kahuna put up are real. It is a Florida water snake and will not hurt you, nor is it venomous. Most of the snakes that are at the Fort will leave you alone if you leave them alone. You cannot be in Florida without reptiles, I'm sorry.

Not to scare you but my daughter saw a snake wrapped around the handlebars of someone's bicycle that was parked while they went into the trading post. She informed the CM and they took care of it. Don't know what kind it was though.

Yeah we live in very close proximity to some of those DC snakes- they are definitely venomous, unusually aggressive, and slimy as all get out !!!

Not to scare you but my daughter saw a snake wrapped around the handlebars of someone's bicycle that was parked while they went into the trading post. She informed the CM and they took care of it. Don't know what kind it was though.

That was Curly, the handlebar snake. Here we thought he had run off with an otter, something about a wild party with free pizza and soda the local raccoons were throwing.

We saw the biggest snake I have ever seen on the sidewalk but it was at POR not Ft wilderness.

Turned out to be a water moccasin (sp?). You don't even want to know how freaked I was. I despise snakes. I am one who washeld hostage by a piddly little garter snake on my driveway. I went to get the mail and spotted him on my way back up the driveway. I screamed and wouldn't walk up until the neighbor came home andlet me know the damn thing was DEAD. Yup, I was even afraid of a dead snake.

They find me, though. I run into them all over the place. Fortunately they are usually the harmless kind. The one at POR, now tat was another story. The pest people were there within a minute or two and got him out of there. Oh, I still shudder just thinking about it

One time we were at the gift shop at CBR, and I swear, they had a whole box of snakes , IN THE GIFT SHOP !!

A water moccasin aka cottonmouth, is IMHO, the nastiest snake in Florida. Unlike a rattlesnake that uses the rattle to tell you to stay away, those stinking moccasins are aggresive, fat, ugly. creepy, slithering suckers. And those are their good points.
Having said that, being a native Floridian, I have only encounter 2 moccasins and 2 rattlesnakes. MOST people get bit trying to pick a snake up or kill it or move it or mess with it. I don't like snakes either, but they are a part of Florida.
CM's will quickly eliminate the problem, as you pointed out.
I knew POR was wild and this confirms it. I'm staying over at the Fort.

Over the years we have seen many snakes (including one who held my SIL hostage on the bench in front of the comfort station) and gators. Last spring we saw a fairly large (compared to the others we have seen) gator happily swimming behind the Meadows. It is Florida so even those of us from Michigan expect to see them. If we run into gators or snakes, we just give them lots of room like we do at home (ok, not many gators here in MI). Its kinda fun to see who can spot what when we are there.

Campster...you are so right about moc's being agressive and downright mean.....Ive been in small flatboats (we call them pirogues here)and have had them actually climb into the boat from the water!! Dang thing had ZERO FEAR....and apparently ZERO SENSE, because we beat that thing with an oar till we were afraid we were going to beat a hole into the boat!! We have never had a gator try to get in a boat with us...and have been in the same water as several gators at times...although they have swam to the boat, but it seemed like it was usually more out of curiosity.

Graciejane...was that your sister-in-law I met on the bench? I came to get ice from the machine one year and there was a lady standing on the bench for about 15 minutes and wouldn't come off until she KNEW the snake was gone. I told her it was headed the other direction, so she should be fine. Somebody walked her back to her campsite to protect her though. I thought it was quite hilarious at the time. The funny thing is the snake had come from the direction of her campsite and it didn't bother her because she didn't know. Like they said, leave them alone and they'll usually leave you alone.

They are nasty!!! Many years ago, we were driving home and passed a bag of garbage on the side of the road. It was a road frequented by may folks who rode horses. In the bag was a large, fat, ugly moccasin. My brother told my dad to stop and he would kill it as if someone on horseback came up on that, it might end in disaster. He got the bumper jack out and swung at the snake's head. He missed the head and just caught the body. The freaky snake came up at him, mouth wide open, ready for a knock down drag out fight. I saw then why they are called cottonmouths. My brother didn't miss the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th time. Geez, foul creatures.

If I see any snakes, I just give them a WIDE path.

You too? OMG! I was in a paddleboat with my uncle (who is only a couple years my senior) and we had one try to crawl in the boat with us. Granted, we were not where a paddle boat was supposed to be....but back to the snake...no fear...didn't want us near us. I am guessing it was a female because it came flying off the bank and I bet she was protecting her nest. I thought at the time my uncle was a fool for bringin a bat and an oar on a paddleboat, I changed my mind real quick.

Not to scare the OP, but most water snakes will go away from you. The fort can do what they can, but you are camping in the semi-wilderness and all.
