I have a book called Florida's Fabulous Reptiles and Amphibians, and they list the other two poisonous snakes as the Timber Rattlesnake, and the Southern Copperhead. I am actually rather fascinated with snakes, but not too close, please!

Snakes and swampland, they go hand in hand. I'm sure the snake was more afraid of you, and your daughter. I'm sorry you had a scare. Me, I would have tried to pick it up once I realised it wasn't a venomous one. I love snakes.

Though I certainly would've been startled to unwittingly put my hand on one, I'd rather deal with a snake than a big ol' spider! (Or even a little ol' spider, come to that!)

At Poly we saw a huge alligator. It was always there it seemed. Does everyone realize that this is outside in FLORIDA. By the way I agree about the other things it could have been. Much more scarry. Sorry that you were afraid though.

Checking my trusty book ........ the timber rattlesnake (also called the canebrake Rattler) range is the extreme most northern central counties of Florida. The Southern Copperhead's range is the panhandle, mostly in Liberty, Gadsden, Jackson, and Calhoun Counties. I love this book - I bring it on every trip to Florida, since you never know what wildlife you may meet!

but not all snakes in FL are native my cousin was bitten on the beach by a viper that had come over(they figure in a banana shipment) and escaped he almost died.

I live in the middle of the city, and have seen quite a few snakes in my apartment complex, most are not venomous, but I will admit, I would be quite startled too if I put my arm on one on a bench!

That happened recently to a friend of mine and it was on TV. Apparently even an aligator appreciates a nice cool, clean pool *wink*

I have heard tell that there are alligators over at DRC in Tampa because they're in a swampy area. I'd love to see one of em wearing a Mickey ears hat.

Cool photos, Ophie! Aubriee's description made me think of a milk snake. As for the yellowish/brown snake with black stripes, is that black stripes around the body or running lenghtwise down the body (like a garter or ribbon snake)? Most snakes are harmless and just think what the rodent population would be like if snakes weren't around...

ITA, Dalgal, think of how the MK and other parks would be ankle deep in rodents without those snakes..... all that food dropped everyday is manna from heaven to rodents!

The stripes ran lenghtwise down the snake. Believe me, We live in Louisiana so a snake is not an unusual sight, it was just the surprise of it crawling up on the back of our bench in such a busy place. The other reason I decided to post is because of my sweet little two and one half year old Grandson, Brier. He recently saw a television show about snakes and is very interested in them. Our entire family is constantly telling him if he sees a snake Not to touch it but to run to Mama or Daddy because water mocasons are very common snakes in our area and they are dangerous. I'm not trying to give snakes a bad rep, only warn people that they might run into them in a place they might not expect.

Aww c'mon... snakes can be great. I'd much rather have a snake than mice or rats. Would prolly be startling though to just see it randomly. Hope you weren't scarred for life.

LOL...I was sitting waiting on a wall outside of TT in EPCOT for DH & Cherubs to come off. Of course it kept getting stuck so I waited around dusk for about 25 minutes! I am sitting dazed and people watching, across from me sitting on another wall is 4 older seniors chatting. Out from a bush next to them comes this lovely gray rat. He sits up and sniffs, I am almost dying cause they do not see it and keep chatting, it scampers down over the wall and across the path over to near me and scurries up into those bushes. I near laughed my butt off the ladies screamed and the men paled. I love rats-have had 2 of the little critters, tame of course, so it did not bother me! Now a snake that is a different story. I would have been freaked out for days and not sat on a bench again!

It may have been a ribbon or garter snake, harmless but probably surprising none the less. You're right to tell your grandson to never pick up any wild animal without adult approval. Even if it is nonvenomous, a bite can be really painful. I've never seen a snake at WDW but have seen an alligator (small) near the GF, while on the monorail.

Tidbit: The largest indigenous snake in N. America is found in FL, the Indigo snake. Normally between 5'-7', it seldom attempts to bite when captured, is usually found in unsettled areas, is federally protected, and eats larger snakes like the Cottonmouth and Rattlesnakes.

I understand that snakes are in FL. However, I sure would not want to touch one, or be so close to one that I COULD touch it. If that happened, I think that I would be feeling like something is crawling on me all day. You know....you start talking about lice and then all of a sudden your head itches...
Don't like snakes....never will....God made me that way!

I picked up an inner tube in the lazy river at BB last month. There was a black snake underneath it trying to get out of the water. Needless to say, I didn't help it along but did tell the lifeguard who promply dealt with it.

I had read stories about other people seeing snakes in the lazy river and was thinking about the reports when I entered the water. I will be more observant when I get in and out of the water from now on.

we were watching the fireworks from right outside the gate (to avoid the stampede after it was over), sitting on the ground, leaning up against a fence next to the ferry dock. wonderful evening, all is calm, show is almost over whem... THWACK! "something" slapped me on my elboe between the fence rails and scurried back under a bush. I nearly flew out of my skin and almost dropped DD when DS11 yells, it's a snake! I spum around in time to see a long dark snake slipping away. The more I looked, we saw MANY golf-ball sized holes in the mulch...his hideaways. SInce the ppl were flowing out of the park now, there was not a CM to be had. When we arrived the next morning, I showed security where it was. Hopefully no one else will get that surprise! Consider yourselves warned!
