Snake at Haunted Mansion!!!!

Well, there are 45 types of Florida snakes. Only 6 are venomous and, of those, only 4 could possibly be found in C. Florida. So, odds are very very low that anyone in WDW is in any danger. I know that's not a comfort to some of you.

Can you remember what it looked like? I might be able to tell you what it was.

Again, sorry you were startled! :grouphug:

In May I was on the bridge at POP Century and saw a snake about 1 1/2 feet long, bright orange with black and white stripes. He was really pretty. Sort of reminded me of Nemo, but in snake form. Any idea what kind he was? He was swimming in the water by the way, not next to me on the bridge. I don't think he would have been quite as pretty if he had been up there with me.

I seen snakes twice at Disney. One time I was riding a bike in Fort Wilderness and I saw two black racers slithering away through the woods. The other time was in November, I went out to swim in the Wilderness Lodge pool at 11:15 pm, and there was a snake swimming around in the water near the bridge near the far side of the pool. The "animal control" people came out and used a big white net and caught the snake. They seemed very unconcerned. They said it was a brown bandit. Funny thing is, some people kept swimming in the pool even with the snake there (though they swam on the other side of the pool, of course! :eek ).

That orange snake could have been a rat/corn snake, scarlet snake, or maybe a coral snake - but they are poisonous so I hope not!!!!

Okay its bad enought that I'm constantly scouring the ground when we're walking around the GF, the Poly, AK and the water parks now I've got to watch for benches too? I'm am petrified of snakes, yes I know most of them aren't venomous but it still freaks me out.

Not wanting to cause a scare but from what I have read in books and seen on TV the coral snake is sort of red yellow and black and it is venomous, the scarlet kingsnake is similar but red and black stripes touching, it is not venomous, and a mimick of the coral snake. The coral snake is usually found under logs in woodland. Can anyone help shed light on this snake???

I"m not snake-phobic, but if I put my arm on one that wuold pretty much make my heart stop. Sorry, I'm not buying the animatronic snake theory. WDW was built on swampy low lands and I'm sure there are plenty of critters, but I just don't want to sit with one in the parks.

Yeah....Yeah...if you believe that snake wasn't animatronic then you probably don't think the animals on KS are animatronic either....and we all know THEY are. :rolleyes1 :rotfl2:

Well, If I remember correctly It was a yellowish/brown with black stripes. :crazy2: Thanks! :wave2:

:earseek: It's a good thing I haven't seen a snake anywhere in WDW. I'd make a fool of myself trampeling anyone and everyone in my flight to safety.

Now I have seen an alligator in the pond at SoG, but only from the safety of the bus.

There is a saying to figure out if it is a coral snake or just one that tries to mimic the coral. "Red on black, friend of Jack, red on yellow, kill a fellow". Like I'm going to remember that as I flee for my life. :rolleyes1

aubriee is not describing a coral snake... they're darker and could not be called "orange".

I'll post some photos for clarification...

*Warning* Snake pictures to follow...

scarlet.gif

This is a scarlet snake. It ranges from a foot to less than three feet. NOT venomous. This might be the orange snake that was mentioned.

corn3.gif

This is a corn snake. Generally 1.5 feet to just over 3 feet. NOT venomous. Also primarily orange.

coral.gif

This is the coral snake. It's generally 1.5 ft to 3ft. It is venomous. Here is some additional info on red/yellow/black snakes.

Now... a yellowish brown snake with black stripes. I'm having a hard time with that one. It sounds as though it's probably a yellow rat snake. Depends on the orientation of the stripes.

The site I linked in the coral snake description is a pretty good one for Florida and Georgia snakes. But, be warned, there are many pictures and some of you will find it pretty uncomfortable.

I'm kind of surprised at the response to the CM who saw the snake. Although most all the snakes around Disney are harmless (so they say-they're alive-IMO, that means they're not harmless-they might scare me to death!), the CMs usually are trained to at least shoo the snake away into the woods or something, as Disney knows snakes will scare a lot of guests, and Disney doesn't want to do anything to spoil the magic (and snakes would definitely "spoil the magic" for me!)
We got one of our most memorable experiences seeing a little garter snake on our last trip. It was at BCV on the walkway from the bus. Apparently it had slithered up from the pond and couldn't get back down. Fortunately we saw it with enough warning to back away, but another woman didn't and so was quite obviously startled. She yelled "Holy S***" and jumped a mile! What made it so funny is that her reaction was so spontaneous-I don't think even she realized what she'd said! But she said what alot of us were thinking.
But a CM came along, shooed the snake into the grass and assured us that it was long gone before we got to where it had been.

Oh my :( I've not seen snakes yet luckily. I have seen an alligator though, floating in the Rivers of America.

I don't know why I read these reads because they just terrify me. Must add "do not sit on benches" to my list of avoid the snakes.

Tuesday my DD age 13 and I exited Haunted Mansion and sat down on a bench to consider our next move. Around five minutes later she raised her arm to put it on the back of the bench, screamed, and jumped up. A snake approx. three foot long had crawled onto the back of the bench while we sat there. The first CM we attempted to show ignored us and kept walking. The second came over, looked at the snake and remarked that it really wasn't unusual. Wow! We have been to WDW six times in the last two years and we sure thought it was unusual. Guess we should remember Disneyworld was built in a low area. :sad2:

And WDW is in Florida where snakes aren't all that unusual. If that wasn't bad enough, every puddle in Florida has an alligator in it. Puhleeze, don't get me started on the spiders.

Seriously, unless it's poisonous, a snake is not going to hurt you. Just shoo it away and it will go. Don't be afraid of a plain, old black snake.

Welcome to florida!! :rotfl2:

We have a screened porch off our lving room, which is on the second floor (we live on a slope). One day my DH called me out to the porch to see a snake slipping through a small hole in the screen!! He must have fallen out of a tree! (I live in a little patch of urban woods).

Six? I was taught 4. Pygmy rattler, Diamond back rattler, Cotton mouth and coral snake. What are the others?

Oh, for goodness sake, if you travel to Florida often, you will see snakes and bugs and alligators galore. Disney can't control quite everything.

I have a book called Florida's Fabulous Reptiles and Amphibians, and they list the other two poisonous snakes as the Timber Rattlesnake, and the Southern Copperhead. I am actually rather fascinated with snakes, but not too close, please!
