DH are flying out to Florida this weekend, and are looking to pack some snacks in our carry on to save money. Is there anything that we shouldn't pack? Also, my aunt is making an Orange Slice cake to take to some family we will be staying with. Will this be ok in my carry on? I have never taken food through security, and I really don't want to loose it, only to have to buy more. We will be on the plane for 6 1/2 hours, so I want to have lunch:)

When we are flying "over a lunch/dinner hour" we try to get fresh subs (i.e. Subway) to purchase after security. I would not get a pre-packagted sandwich - YUCH!

We generally will not pack a sandwich at home, as by the time we leave our house 3 hours before a flight...well it is just an "old" sandwich by the time you would eat it.

My DD just went on a long flight - and I packed her some trail mix - made of all things that are "safe" to bring through security.

Now - does the cake have frosting? The cake itself shouldn't pose any issues - but I would be concerned about frosting. Last I checked things like cream cheese and peanut butter are not allowed - and IMHO - frosting would resemble peanut butter or cream cheese. The TSA sight specifically states:

You can bring pies and cakes through the security checkpoint, but they are subject to additional screening.

However, I would consider that frosting would be considered: Creamy dips and spreads (cheeses, peanut butter, etc.) which need to be part of your 3-1-1 liquids clear bag. So my guess is, it would be dependent on the individual screening agent.

We have brought sandwich crackers, protein bars, trail mix, packaged dried fruit, and fruit that we ate at the first airport we flew out of.

If the frosting is on the cake you should be ok just like peanut butter sandwiches are ok. We take sandwiches all the time. We also take dried foods and crackers. I would not want to fly with a cake just because I would worry it would get damaged. We take lots of snacks and have not had a problem with any spread already on something.

Off topic, but can you please share that cake recipe. DH's gma used to make that for him, and it was his favorite cake. I never did get her recipe though. Thanks!

If you pack something with peanuts, you might want to eat it before or after the plane. With so many peanut allergies, airlines will not serve peanuts when there is a person with that allergy onboard. I have also heard that they ask that others not eat peanut products while on board a flight with a severely allergic person.

I used to pack trail mix, or peanut butter & celery. Still haven't figured out what to pack instead... :scratchin

I tend to bring things like granola bars, nuts (although this one I tend not to eat on the plane, at least with the granola bars the nuts are better contained), chips (pringles work best as they aren't so greasy), things like grapes would work well. If you do apples or oranges be sure to have a baggy for the trash until the flight attendants come by with the trash bag.

Am I reading this right? I zip lock baggie best to be able to pull out of bad in security easily? So like my liquid foundation is 1.2ou, travel shampoo 1.7 ou, and body wash 1.2 ou = I would be over the limit allowed? Those are the smallest bottles the stores carry how do people do this?

3-1-1 for carry-ons = 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume); 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin. One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3.4 ounce (100ml) container size is a security measure.

No you are not reading that right. 100mL is not the total volume you may carry. Each bottle inside the quart bag cannot exceed 100mL.

OP, there should not be any problems placing frosted cake into your carry on. I would make sure it's in a sturdy plastic tupperware-style container.

You can take any food on the plane that can hold its own consistency if it was poured out. You will have no issues with most foods, unless they are surrounded in water or juice.

We travel with all of DS' food because he has food allergies. Things I would avoid (from experience of being made to check it) fruit cups, applesauce cups, canned tuna/chicken. You can have a sandwich with jelly on it, but cannot have a jar of jelly. I would think a jar of pb or something of that nature would be fine though because it's not a liquid that you can pour. :confused3

Any other type of food is not an issue!

And 100 ml is 3.4 oz, so it's a good amount of liquid allowed especially if you cram the baggie full. :)

Thank you. I was sure wondering how this could be right. So excited 12 days left and might be getting a little panic about forgetting something

I've traveled with lunch

lunchmeat sandwich (never stoped by TSA)

Peanut Butter sandwich (never stopped by TSA, never been told not to eat on plane)

or purchased a sandwich/wrap in airport after security

chips

as far as snacks I always have:

something crunchy salty (pb crackers, snack mix, goldfish, etc)

something sweet (m&m, fruit gels, sourpatch kids)

and gum

If my experiences are any help, I've gone through MCO security with two boxed cupcakes from Disney (frosting and all) with no issue.

Only thing I've ever had taken away was my son's yogurt. I saw a lady in front of me lose two jars of homemade apple butter. I was tempted to ask if I could have them, since I could have gone back to my car to stow them.

I sometimes take a cheese sandwich if it is a really long flight. I put a "to go" packet of mayo in my quart baggie. I always take something like pretzels to munch on to avoid air sickness. Bananas are good if they don't get mushed, as are muffins or cookies.

I would do pringles like PP said they are not greasy. They come in a can so they won't be crushed and are easily resealable.

I ALWAYS carry a few of the large peppermint patties with me which are good encase someone gets a queezy tummy.

I always buy a bottle of water before I get on the flight just encase the flight is too bumpy that they can serve drinks at least I have something.

I like those little snackables pre packaged lunches, so I will freeze one then put it inside an insulated lunch bag. I get to the airport early and by the time I board the plane it is defrosted and ready to eat.

We brought cheese and crackers in a soft sided cooler and use frozen grapes to keep it cold. I once saw a family ahead of us have their chewy fruit snacks taken away, you know that betty Crocker kind in the shape of cartoons? Don't know why. Their little boy seemed a little sad about it. I was busy getting our stuff on the belt so I didn't catch the reason.

I bring a soft side lunch bag with sandwiches and small ice packs. No problems. I bring granola bars and breakfast bars as they are filling. I always buy a water after security as you never know if you need water to take a medication.
