Snacking Around the World Showcase Plan and Questions

I hate the World Showcase. I know. Throw me out of the DIS. But personally, I find it boring. Not interested in travel films. The American Adventure is a nice history lesson, but doesn't excite me. Shopping is not really my thing. I like rides. So we've always managed to get to Norway and Mexico. I like food. So we nearly always go to Canada. But since we've started going as a family we've never once made it around the World Showcase. This, I am told, is a travesty. Everyone I know loves EPCOT. Me, I rank it dead last of the four parks.

So to try and appease my dh (Flightless Duck) who really REALLY wants to make it around the World Showcase this trip, I have decided to try and add an incentive for us to make it around. We have the QSDP, which means we have more snack credits than anybody needs. So I thought we'd try to snack around the world showcase. At each country, we'd get a snack that's at least slightly representative of that country's food. Then, we'd share it four ways between us, so none of us explode from way too much food. Course, even shared four ways, we may explode. But here's the plan, with lots of questions inserted. What do you think? What are we missing? (And don't say alcohol - I'm sure Flightless Duck will get some of that, but we're neither of us drinkers enough to do the whole showcase. And we have our 13 and 10 year old with us.) Opinions, advice, and observations are all welcomed!

Canada:

Le Cellier -

We're starting here because we have an 11:45 lunch ressie here. Then we're going to go around counter clockwise. We're not getting a snack here because we figure Le Cellier will count. Mmmmm....

UK:

Yorkshire County Fish Shop -

We think a side of chips is our only option here. It's definitely the only thing listed on the Confirmed Snack thread. But looking at the menus, it seems to be the only choice besides packaged shortbread. And we'd like to avoid packaged items. Anything else we should know about?

France:

Boulangerie Patisserie or Crepes des Chefs de France -

Unlike the UK, here our problem is too much of a good thing. Do we go for one of the decadent pastries in the patisserie? Or should we have the chocolate crepe we crave? Opinions?

Morocco:

Tangierine Cafe -

Is there anything for a snack credit here? Not on the confirmed snack list. But we can go out of pocket to accomplish our goal if necessary. Couscous Salad side order? Maybe one of the "freshly baked pastries" the menu mentions? Is there BAKLAVA??

Japan:

Kaki Gori -

Rainbow flavored, please!

United States:

Fife and Drum Tavern-

If it's not too soon after the Kaki Gori, we might go for The American Dream - frozen strawberry, vanilla ice cream, and frozen blue raspberry. But if we're all ice creamed out, a box of popcorn is American, right? It's indigenous and all that!

Italy:

Tutto Italia Kiosk -

MmmmMMmmmmm tiramisu... Not sure if it's on the DDP, but we'll take it anyway!

Germany:

Sommerfest -

Pretzel? Apple Strudel? Black Forest Cake? What shall we pick??

China:

Tea Stand -

Pretty sure this is not DDP, but we'll grab a Caramel Ginger ice cream to be completist. Or maybe Strawberry Red Bean, but frankly, that sounds really odd. Or does the Lotus Blossom Cafe take DDP? If so, are the egg rolls or pot stickers snack credits?

Norway:

Kringla Bakeri Og Cafe -

Thought School Bread would be the easy choice here. But then I saw this berry filled cream puff on the Disney Parks blog... This may have to be an on the fly decision after checking the case.

Mexico:

Taqueria Del Lago -

Again, no word on what counts as a snack here from the Confirmed Snack list. I'm guessing churros and flan. But we might go OOP to grab a quesadilla instead to combat the sugar high we'll be on by this point.

Will we make it? Will we explode? Will we ever want dinner that night?

I can only chime in on a few things...

Japan: kaki gori was so fun - the kids loved it. Very refreshing.

China: the ice creams are on my must-do list for next time.

Germany: we had a CS lunch there and we loved it! The streudel was very good.

Norway: we tried the school bread and we were kind of unimpressed. Like a Wal-Mart donut with creme filling.

At Norway I LOVE the sweet pretzel with almonds. It is sooo good and I always get one or two while I am there. DH has the schoolbread and he loves that.

First of all, skip something in America... you can get that type of stuff anywhere else - nothing special about it. Enjoy the show, but without food. You'll have plenty elsewhere anyway!

As for Norway, I was also rather disappointed in the school bread. I was expecting more of a donut texture, but it seemed a little more like a roll to me - and not as sweet as I was expecting. I am, however, a fan of the lefse. It's thin bread-like stuff that they roll up with butter, cinnamon, and sugar. I love it! But there's lots of other good stuff to try in Norway too.

As far as the strawberry red bean ice cream in China - sounded really weird to us, but we actually love it! Don't think of black beans or kidney beans or something like that... rather, think about something like vanilla beans. It works in ice cream.

Good idea for snacking throughout the WS though! I like it! :thumbsup2

We always love getting the funnel cake from america.... but being English, I'm not sure if this is available all over america so may not interest you that much. Fried ice cream is also amazing!

In Norway there is so much choice of cakes in the Kringla bakery, so I would not choose until I get there and see something that really jumps out at you.

Maybe in France you could treat yourselves to 1 aloholic drink? Grey goose slushes (lemon vodka flavoured crushed ice) always go down well with us!!

We've heard good things, so we're hoping we'll like it. We have Rita's Italian Ice in our area, and we're wondering if the Kaki Gori is more like that or more snocone like.

Germany: we had a CS lunch there and we loved it! The streudel was very good.

May have to go for the streudel then. I love me some streudel...

Norway: we tried the school bread and we were kind of unimpressed. Like a Wal-Mart donut with creme filling.

We had it in 2006 and were underwhelmed as well. But we liked it a lot during our Akershus princess lunch last time. :confused3

Thanks for the tips!

Good point.

Wow. That sounds good! I think my family would be fans as well.

I was wondering if it might be a vanilla bean kind of thing. Decisions, decisions!

Thanks!

My dh is a funnel cake snob. We've never found funnel cake anywhere that tastes as good as it does in our home town (because of the Pennsylvania Dutch connection, I think). But the rest of us aren't so picky! Thanks for the suggestion.

DH has been talking about getting one of these since he heard about them on the DIS last year. I think that will be a must-do on his list!

Love this idea!!!!!!!!! My kids don't go for EPCOT at all. This is such a fun twist.

Not sure when you scheduled your trip, but one thing last year that we really enjoyed is going around to the presentations from the different countries about Christmas time holidays/traditions. If you are ever visiting between Thanksgiving and Christmas, I would highly recommend it!

there are so many yummy things to choose it would be hard for me to pick just one thing in each pavillion. I really liked the schoolhouse bread, but I knew going in it would be more like a roll than like a donut...but everything there looked so good!!!

Since you have so many snack credits- you can always share some things...;)
And if you find something you like- try to grab an extra one (or 2) to bring back to your room for a late night snack :)

Enjoy!!!!
