So we were planning on flying into SNA but I recently read some of the threads about the take off and that has me worried. My DD 10 and I have horrible motion sickness issues anyway. We wear the Sea-Bands, take Bonine and chew the ginger gum and we still get sick. We could fly into LAX but then I am sure we will be sick for being in the car for an hour. So talk to me and tell me how bad the take-off is at SNA and is the landing the same way? Thanks for your help!

I haven't noticed any difference in take-off's or landings at SNA compared to other airports.

The plane rev's up and off you goooooooooooooooo.

I hope you do fine on your air portion of the trip.

Have to say the fact that the reply was a You Tube video really freaked me out. LOL Then I watched it and it looks no different than usual. LOL Think we will take our chances. Thanks!

We fly in and out of SNA several times a year. You really feel no differance during take off there than any other take off. You will *hear* a differance when they power down the engines over the home soon after take off.

My eldest had horrible motion sickness as a child and would usually throw up on our drive from LAX to DLH. She never had any problems flying in or out of SNA.

Take-off angle is steeper than at most airports, and after a few seconds the engine power is reduced to cut down noise.

You will be fine!

The pilot often comes on to make an announcement about takeoff to warn people who haven't flown out of SNA before. It had me a little nervous, but it's honestly just because the cabin gets pretty quiet when they cut the engines back and that tends to freak people out a bit if they don't know it's coming.

I HATE flying (hate, hate, hate), and I actually find the SNA takeoff a bit better than the average takeoff. Once they cut the engines back, it's just a much more gradual ascent than is typical. For seome reason, I found that a bit calming.

I found no difference in landing there at all. Seemed like a completely typical landing to me.

I am not a pro by any means on SNA, but I am a flight attendant for a major airline who flies in and out of Orange County.

SNA has a noise abatement rule which makes the pilots do their job a little differently on take off and landing. It is NOT violent or jarring. The motion won't be radical -- but it will feel and sound just a little different than most take off and landings. Most people don't even notice the difference, only those that are hyper sensitive to it. Honestly, if you can take a normal take off and landing you'll do just fine. It really isn't a big deal.

Relax. Don't worry. And no need to do the LAX drive. :goodvibes

We just flew in and out of SNA a couple of weeks ago, and I didn't notice a thing. I had no idea it was any different until I saw your post, so I don't think it will be much of an issue.

They may have made an announcement, but I didn't notice that either. Though I'm not exactly the best at listening to the safety talk every single time ...

We flew in to SNA during a heavy rain, and out of SNA in beautiful weather. Both were fine.
And after having been through SNA, I never want to suffer with flying through LAX again!

OP, I live here in the OC. I fly in and out of JOHN WAYNE as well as LAX often.

AND exactly LIKE YOU, I wear the sea bands and take the Bonine.

I can honestly tell you, neither airport bothers me.

JW (SNA) is just a really nice airport. AND CLOSE to DL.

We just returned from 2 weeks back East and landed into LAX. Now the landing was absolutely fine BUT BUT BUT ugh … there was so much traffic driving home. Ugh.

GO WITH JOHN WAYNE.

The pilot telling us what we were gonna do made me over-anxious (I hate flying!) but had he not said anything, I wouldn't have really noticed.

I fly between Phoenix and SNA and back again about every 45 to 60 days as my spouse lives in Orange County.

My standard Southwest Airlines flight out of SNA is the last one on Sunday and we get the noise abatement notice from the pilot or flight attendant.

The only difference you will notice is that the engines will be louder than normal before the start down the runway and then then engines will get very quiet shortly after the wheels leave the ground. There are no jarring movements, although you can feel the momentum wane.

And, as another poster said, you often get a flight attendant telling everyone to be quiet so we don't bother the wealthy people. :)

I have never heard anyone complaining about the motion causing them nausea or anything else.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. Relax and enjoy the flight.

Yeppers. It's very obvious to me; I listen to everything. To me, it's MUCH steeper than going out of most airports.

Agreed.

I *think* they do the same in San Diego, but the approach and landing at that airport are what stick most in my head. :)

But OP none of it is likely to make anyone more or less airsick.

As others have noted, the only difference in the take off is that they accelerate down the runway and climb out faster. That should actually lessen the propensity for motion sickness since you'll be in smooth air quicker.
