Smoking & stroller wagons banned May 1!

It kind of makes me wonder how those people can function in day to day life. I cannot FATHOM yelling at someone to move or intentionally running into someone. I just can't. I'm so sorry that happened to your daughter. Having to explain to kids why some adults are just plain mean or without manners is sad and difficult.

My DD is a great person. She is probably the most compassionate person I have ever met. I agree with many of the PP who say that courtesy and manners go a long way.

I think what happens with many people's view of ECVs is that they are more noticeable because of their size and potential to injure. It's not that there are more inconsiderate people on ECV, and most are perfectly fine, it's jsut that when someone does bump into you (or almost), it's quite different than when some oblivious person on foot bumps into you. So the perception that ECV users (and to a lesser extent giant strollers) are a problem is accentuated. It's like how a chihuahua may be more likely to snap at someone than certain large-breed dogs, but nobody really worries about the chihuahua. What we see is one rude person on an ECV and we perceive it as the norm for all of them. We're filling in the blanks, but erroneously (people do that with lots of things all the time). This is why I generally just try not to worry about the rude guests, whether they are walking, on an ECV, pushing a stroller, a wagon, a wheelbarrow, whatever. I'll just try to be as alert as I can, and while everybody should be, I can't control that, so I'll just go about my magical day.

Man, for a theme park that is ultimately about the fantasies of kids, there is a lot of smugness regarding the new stroller rule and what seems like thinly veiled disgust about children at the parks. I suspect the dimensions aren’t going to affect 99.9% of strollers outside of wagons because they definitely accounted for the biggest doubles on the market. I can’t remember which poster was talking about his little kid with naps, but FWIW we have a double chariot that has a bench seat instead of bucket seats, and we’ve had 3 kids simultaneously napping in that and it’s worked.

As for “well just go back to your hotel for naps” - what exactly are people supposed to do when you have two adults, 4 kids under 7 - so no kids can ride alone - 3 over 40” - and a 4 month old that needs naps? We all twiddle our thumbs in the hotel room while the baby sleeps all day? We probably should just not come to Disneyland at all, right? Kind of ridiculous advice, and the reality is there will always be strollers, and children, at Disneyland so it’s best to just have a positive attitude and have the best trip you can instead of worrying about everyone else.

eta I have no opinion about the wagons bc we don’t have one and I didn’t see any on our last trip (November.)

I agree not everyone on an ECV or pushing a stroller is trying to run into people and they are more noticeable due to size, but they do hurt when they run over your feet or run into the back of your legs. Moreso than a person bumping into you while walking. I’ve seen people with strollers and ECVs pushing their way through crowds, using them to cut in front of people. That is what I have a problem with. But it’s Disneyland, still going to have a good time

I just wish there was a compromise with ECVs and those who need mobility assistance would utilize either an electric or regular wheelchair. Those are MUCH different than ECVs and are much easier to control. The problem with ECVs is that they have the ability to move faster than average joe walking speed. In large crowds and impatient (or inexperienced or inconsiderate) people on those is no bueno. Coming into contact with one of those is the force/weight of not only the person on the scooter but also the scooter itself. I would much rather get ran into by a person going at normal walking speed than 200+ pounds of person+metal going full speed ahead.

ECVs do cause a lot of congestion issues, but I have never witnessed what you describe. Not sure what can be done about that. And in my experience strollers are a bigger congestion headache.

I had four kids and we never, not once, took a stroller to DLR.

Those are all examples from just off the top of my head. The beeping is pretty frequent when the crowds get dense and the crossing Main Street example happened a couple years ago. The scooter was driven by an older gentleman going across the dip down areas in the curbs on either side of the street and I (literally) had to hop out of the way to avoid him coming into contact with my leg. Of course the people I was with thought it was funny, but I saw my life flash before my eyes! haha

Two CMs told me that's where guests go when they have Multiple-experience FPs they'd like to use. While CMs aren't obliged to honor them on non-FP rides, often they will, depending on how busy the park is, their mood, guests' demeanor and other such conditions. In any case, as I stood there, a woman in an ECV in front of me seemed to await the rest of her party. She wailed frantically into her phone as she cry-splained where they should join her. Judging from her tone, someone's life depended on it. Then -- frustrated, apparently -- she began to beep the ECV horn. Incessantly; as if the longer she beeped it, the faster her friends would materialize and the sea of guests would part before her... because this was a guest that didn't care for lines (a rarity, I know). After about 30-45 seconds of this, I decided that I'd return to Pirates another time -- when my mental well-being wouldn't be under direct assault. Some guests...

I have had several experiences with inconsiderate people and strollers and ECVs. I don't mind them at all and they serve a great purpose for those who need them. But, I personally feel the people using them should be more aware.

Agreed! ECV's are meant to put guests that need them on equal footing with other guests. They're not intended to put them above everyone else. I've seen guests on ECVs at rope drop with two or three kids aboard as they sped towards PP. Certainly they were going faster than nearly anyone could walk. In effect, they ran. Walt help anyone that didn't make way. ECVs are meant as an accommodation not an advantage.

A friend told me that the ECVs rented by Disney have their speed regulated. Those owned by guests are not always so regulated.

That's actually hilarious! Not in the moment, I'm sure, but your recount of it made me laugh. Sometimes I feel like Disneyland could be a great observation place for sociologists to see how different people behave and for what reasons lol

Back when ours were young, we always used the $39 candy cane stroller when going to the parks. Easier to get in and out of cars and trams, and we did not have to worry about it getting stolen. Not sure why the big SUVs strollers are so popular these days.

Chatting today with a co worker about the strollers. We both think that the big SUV strollers are more of a status symbol for some.
My mom and I can't wait to take her grandson / my nephew to Disneyland for the first time but we are waiting till he is around 5 yrs old so he can enjoy more of the park.

Just a heads up: Saw on MousePlanet that the glider boards will also be banned starting on May 1st. Apparently they fall under the "nothing towed behind a stroller" rule (https://disneyland.disney.go.com/park-rules/). Does anyone have any other confirmation on this?

Thank you! And it’s just occurred to me why she was so frantic to get inside. She was under the impression that all of the treasure was real and she was the only to realize. It’s the only thing that makes sense... provided we reject the idea that she was completely and utterly insane. I, for one, suggest strongly that we don’t.

If only there were a designated smoking area in the park. You know: smokers' rights and all that.

I feel confident that they will. Zero tolerance seems likely, given how seriously they take smoking in non-smoking areas of the park. No (smoking) means no (smoking).

This happens at MHP every year -- CMs (usually leads and managers from what I've seen) address smokers and send/escort them to the designated smoking area in the esplanade. This year, I assume the designated area will be outside the secure zone. But we've seen Disney keep DL non-smoking for every MHP we've attended over the past few years, and they've done a good job. Now let's see if they can do it for both parks and DTD.

Just wondering if a stroller with a removable standing platform at the back for an older child is allowed with all these new stroller changes? Couldn't find the answer anywhere.. Though I am new to the boards... Could be user error on my part! We would be attaching it to our small-ish single stroller and removing it for use on parking trams/busses as the stroller doesn't fold with it attached.

Welcome to the boards! Are you referring to a glider board? If so, the post above (#192) and the link to DLR's rules should answer your question. The stroller itself should be fine if it fits within the allowed measurements and and the allowed guidelines. The glider board will not be allowed after May 1st.
