Wow! Are you joking?I didn't know mods had the license to be condescending and downright rude to a poster that was just stating her experience.

But you're not alone.

New rules for the board:

1. only happy, joyful, pixie-dust-filled posts from now on please    .
2. No complaints or grumbling allowed. :rolleyes1
3. We don't care what you experienced while you were on vacation - unless of course everything was covered in pixie dust, then you're more welcome to share. :thumbsup2

And yes, I'm being saracastic. :stir:

I think you are onto something....I find this to a moderator stance these days. So much for America being a country where we have freedom of speech. :teeth: I think Disney World is being confused with Duloc from Shrek.

Shall we sing along..............

These kind of threads always go this direction. They end up with personel attacks, and a blanket condemnation of a group of people that are also member's of this community. If you want to bash cleo for trying to avoid this I guess that's your business. Moderators are there for a purpose, and they know that threads like this always end up with attacks. Most smokers obey the rules, these kinds of threads only alienate innocent people. Go back and reread all the post, and listen to the bitterness and hatred in them. I don't smoke, so if it makes you feel better, or you like having more people who share your opinion to back you up, please feel free to flame away at me. :wave2:

You're forgetting one thing- That was life back then. Times have definately changed. We now know the dangers of smoking, and don't want to be subjected to second hand smoke.

My long-departed grandmother put it best. "They just figured out smoking is bad!? Anybody with an ounce of common sense could have figured that out without help!"

Okay- I have to respond here.
I used to be a smoker so I know all about the "addiction". I also know that you make a choice to smoke. Now I don't care if you smoke or not. That's your business - BUT- I can only imagine just how polite and nice someone would be if you walked up to them and asked them to stop smoking (nicely of course!)
Hey, that reaction is nothing compared to the one I get when I walk up to a smoker and say, "I quit smoking, would you mind blowing some smoke AT me?"
Mama House Mouse said:
Also- YES- I don't have to be on top of you to smell your smoky clothes etc. I happen to know a family of smokers and you can smell them from at least 10 feet away. I am not the only one who notices this.
Okay, but I didn't realize we were talking about smokers we know. I thought we were talking about a smoker at Walt Disney World who's smoking in an area where it's not permitted. I can't see any non-smoker sniffing THAT person to determine how she/he and his/her children smell.
IMO It is only common sense that if there are designated smoking areas noted everywhere, ie on the maps, on the Disney tv channel in the hotel room and many other places I observed in April, then all other places are designated as non-smoking.
But then you've got (a) smokers who are not staying onsite and who do not have a map; and (b) smokers who just don't care. Since we can't tell which is which, doesn't it make MUCH more sense to assume all fall in the first category - and either politely point out the smoking restriction (and area, if one's nearby), or finding a Cast Member to do it?
So - advise me. Where and when should I light up to least offend people.
Interesting question. Smoking may actually be prohibited on the dock (for safety reasons, i.e. it may be wood :)). Somewhere on the beach, maybe? Get there early, away from people already there, and light up. Guests arriving after you will know to stay away :)

Oh boy this is one of my favorite topics! I got back from WDW a few weeks ago and was surprised by the number of people smoking anywhere they pleased! It really seemed up from last year.

Ideally as a non-smoker I would love for Disney to ban smoking in the parks. Realistically I do not think this will happen. I would love for the smokers to stick to the designated areas.

There are many people out there who have severe allergies to smoke. I am one of those people. I have only one lung. I am extremly sensitive. Just a few sniffs of smoke can make breathing very difficult for me. On my trip I politely asked some people to stop and was rudely told to mind my own business. I then talked to a CM who would handle it.

It seems so simple to me. Smokers smoke in thier area and those of us that have problems with it can avoid that area.

Maybe there needs to be more areas. I am not sure if that would solve the problem but I can say that I would love it if I could go around the parks without having to worry about getting sick from someone's second hand smoke!

People smoking where they should not is one of the worst part of our trips to wdw. I think the problem is getting worse.
a lot of people do not worry about smoking around my children, why should they when they are smoking around their own children :confused3

People who smoke accept the risks involved, this may help them have a lighter view to the risks of passive smoking to others.

People who smoke also accept the smell etc and probably think the tiny amount (compaired to them) they inflick on you not a problem.

Rember this is a comment on the people who do not follow the rules

As a non-smoker for the last 9 years I can say that seeing people smoke in non designated areas bothers me. I can't see that after "directly" smoking for over 40 years, second hand smoke will have very much effect on me. I still know that times are different.

When I first started to visit WDW you could smoke almost everywhere except in the actual attraction. On the street, in the Q, in the restaurants, everywhere. It was acceptable back then, it isn't now. I personally have a job that on occasion requires me to confront smokers who are smoking in areas deemed non-smoking. Some say they didn't know, others spout off about being tax payers and they will smoke any place they please.

After I point out that I would be more than happy to get a policeman to explain the no smoking ordinance to them, they seem to have a change of heart. What that means is that enforcement is possible and really not all that difficult. If you can get enough reasonable demands through to Disney, not the ban all smoking in the universe one, but the enforce the areas one, they will, I'm sure, make it a priority at some point.

:smokin: I really wish Dis could lose this smiley because I feel it sends exactly the wrong message.

Why is it that CM's don't do anything about it? I hate it that people are allowed to smoke around kids. *sigh*

You've actually hit upon the very reason that there is a problem at all concering smoking at WDW. The cigarette nazis make it very unpleasant for the CMs to enforce this particular rule, and, therefore, the rule, for the most part, doesn't get enforced at WDW.

Much to the chagrin of the vast majority of nonsmokers (or former smokers who had the wherewithal to quit--cold turkey, and without any crutches--like me, many many years ago).

Excellent! Another rant thread!
If that sounded harsh, I really did not mean it to be as bad as it sounded. ;) I completely agree that smoking outside designated areas is wrong, I just do not want to spend my time getting worked up over it.
I am just frustrated because there are so many threads like this, where all people do is complain about misbehaving guests. This subject was thoroughly plastered in other threads. It's a pity that we put so much time into getting upset over something. :sad2: I think we should be talking more about nice things people have done.

Best not, in your case, to frequent message boards then, eh?

although they`re shooting them selves in the foot, because one day disney will put thier foot down and totally ban it from the parks all together, ruining it for all those curtious smokers who DO think about others.

Can't wait 'til that day comes! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

Amen to that. And notice how it's never THEIR family who does something obnoxious? (Not directed at the OP here, just a general comment)

What's with all the complaints lately? Geez! And the smoking thing has been 'done to death'. I'm a non-smoker, I hate smoke in non-designated places, but for heaven's sake....enough already!!

I'm not going to close the thread since the OP has every right to let her thoughts be known on the subject and to get replies. If it goes the route this particular topic ALWAYS goes, I'll see you shortly with my big, nasty Whammy Stick.

I'm a smoker of the worst kind...I absolutely cannot STAND the smell of smoke, yet I can't quit! I carry a little bottle of body splash with me and spritz myself after smoking and wash my hands, etc...seriously can not stand it! I don't smoke around my son and of course not in anyone's houses (including my own), etc. I am very aware of it all the time and am curteous as to the others around me. I get a non-smoking hotel room and smoke outside on my balcony and stick to designated smoking areas and it bothers me when others can not be as curteous. Ok, there could be more smoking areas I guess. Especially around World Showcase since there's more adults. But how rude, especially someplace where there are so many children around, to smoke outside of those areas! I never noticed the smell until I was pregnant and had quit - it was the most disgusting smell - and yet like a dumba**, I went back - huge mistake! One thing that bothered me - and you'll read about this in an upcoming trip report - on our last trip in February, we invited my BIL and SIL, also smokers (BIG SMOKERS) on our trip with us. They don't smoke in my house and they requested adjoining rooms when we stayed at WL - they were non-smoking rooms, mind you! My SIL insisted on smoking in her room and got mad at me when I kept our adjoining door shut all the time - and the smoke still came in our room so I rolled up towels and placed them along the bottom of the door. She ranted and raved (someone has issues) about how it was HER vacation and she paid a lot of money for it and there was no way she wasn't going to smoke, yada yada yada...made me very angry and very uncomfortable - pretty much the tone of our trip unfortunately! And man - her room STUNK...and my poor little boy didn't understand why I didn't want him hanging out in their room - they had the nerve to smoke in there (unbeknownst to me at the time) while he was in there with them. And in the parks it was just as bad. It killed them to have to go to one smoking area to the next - they did nothing but complain the whole time about how far apart they were, etc...It was embarrassing...and they spent their time on line for the rides (the few that they did actually go on) complaining about how they had to have a cigarette, and complained the whole time...ARGHHH...you would think just being around them would enable me to quit!! I am usually just so excited to be there that I don't want to waste time smoking - I want to have fun!!
