Smoking in Parks

Spent a day each in Epcot and Magic Kingdom last weekend. Don't know if it was my imagination or not but it seemed like more smokers were using the smoking areas in the Parks and less people were just walking through the Parks smoking. I know several years ago when Disney started having the designated smoking areas in the Parks people wondered if they would be used. Anyhow, thanks to any smokers who do use these areas.

We are so spoiled by Disney's smoking policy. It's such a wonderful thing. One of our children has severe asthma. We use to have to run around all the people smoking. Now we just have to avoid the designated smoking area. It's great! I hope other amusement parks catch on.

I've seen better enforcement of the smoking policy also and glad for all guests and CM's.I know some still abuse the policy but it does seem to be getting better.::yes:: :wave2:

More people would use the smoking areas if they could find them. The ones at MK are clearly marked, but the other 3 parks are hard to find. You have to go from trash can to trash can looking for the smoking sign with the ashtray on top. It's crazy!!

When I was at WDW in Sept, I saw the CMs enforcing the designated smoking area policy. A person could not have the cigarette fully lit before they were approached and directed to the designated ares. Kudos to WDW!

I think the smoking areas are great. I am a smoker and find it very convenient to use the designated smoking areas. We were in a non-Disney amusement park last summer and I spent a lot of time studying the map trying to find the smoking areas, only to discover that there weren't any. It was actually more of a pain to try and find a spot that was out of people's way to light up and there were few ashtrays to be found.

When we were there a couple of weeks ago we saw plenty of people walking through WS with a cigarette. I guess the food and WINE festival was too much for them to handle. I never saw any in the other parks though.

thank you, also, to all smokers who use the designated areas. My husband has chronic asthma & just a whiff of cigarette smoke can sometimes cause a severe attack. I think a lot of smokers simply aren't aware how harmful the smoke can be if a person has a respiratory problem. By knowing where the designated areas are, my husband can avoid them, but when someone walks by smoking there's not a lot of time to hurry away from the smoke.

I truly appreciate all who are considerate in following the rules when they wish to smoke...thank you!

I like the smoking areas too. DH smokes--- I don't. He'd never think of smoking outside of the designated areas- as he doesn't smoke in our cars or our house either. Anyhow, when he goes to smoke-- I go duck into a shop. Works great-- this way I get a few minutes to shop alone.

Yes, there are marked on the park maps.

A note on World Showcase and the Food & Wine festival. There were a few of the designated areas taken over by F&W booths. However, in each case they have set up a temporary area to replace them, just ask a cast member, they will direct you.

My BF uses only the smoking areas when he smokes. I'm allergic to it so I usually stay away. But sometimes, if I find a smoking area and no one is there at the time, I'll stop and take some pictures. The areas are usually in out of the way places and offer great photo oppurtunities. :)

Thanks to everyone who uses the designated smoking areas!! As a former smoker, I know it helps curb my temptation to light up again if I don't see others smoking (or smell it!), especially if I am having a glass of wine at the F & W Festival. Also my 4 year old son has no idea what a cigarette is, and I'd like to keep it that way for a while longer!

Our whole family really appreciate the smoking areas and the smokers who only smoke in those areas. Being non smokers, and having visited many different Paramount and Six Flags parks over the years, finding a majority of all the Disney parks to be non smoking was certainly a pleasant surprise when we visited last year. Hopefully Disney will always be able to continue with this practice.

We use the designated areas, although I think if they created a few more areas everyone would use them. It can be a hike to find one sometimes and some areas are not very visible.

Disney was thoughtful and tried to create nice areas with benches but it also sort of back fired. More than once, we went and it was loaded with non-smoking families taking a break with their kids. I have no problem with that but I did have a problem when a few of the parents gave the smokers dirty looks when they lit up. Sometimes, you just can't win, lol

Thats the one that gets me. It is clearly a smoking area, they sit on the benches and make rude comments at us. They will sit there waving there hand at the smoke as if I'm going to leave. If you don't like it don't sit in the smoking area! :grouphug:

This happened to me in AK...The girls were getting their face painted near the entrance of the Safari- and I left them there with DH, to find a smoking area. I asked a CM Security guard- and he directed me to the area behind a restaurant. It was like a patio type place, forgive me for forgetting the name.

However- I was there, along with 1 other lady, just lit the smoke, and this family shows up with 3 little kids. the mom- loudly, and rudely says to the dad "well, we could rest here, IF these people didn't SMOKE ALL OVER THE PARK".. she was only about 3 feet from me, so I said- as nicely as I could "I'm sorry YOU must be mistaken, this IS a smoking area, not a rest your feet area, they're benches RIGHT OVER THERE in the shade- for general resting"..

She shot me "A LOOK" and walked away. The other lady commented on how she hears that at least 1 park a day while she's there.

I really wish they were better marked...and more plentyful. never did I smoke not in a designated area, however I agree with previous posters, some of them are few and far between, and are very poorly marked.

When you want to just duck away from the rest of the family, and quickly get a smoke in, it's hard to do so you spend 3/4 of the time looking for the nearest one!

oh and as an FYI- neither DH nor I saw anyone smoking outside of a designated area on our trip in April, and that was during the flower and garden festivites.

I so appreciate the fact that smoking is only in designated areas. We were just in Cedar Pointe Amusement park where smoking is permitted everywhere. We were really aware of this as everyone was smoking and there were butts everywhere.
