Smoking in Non designated areas

I know everyone states they are a considerate smoker but I've yet to actually meet one.

That is because a considerate smoker would never have been doing that to begin with. So, in all probability you have met several considerate smokers, you just don't know it.

goofyernmost *bravo* I think you are probably right. :)

These smoking threads sometimes get out of hand.. people do get passionate about their rights... so far I think everyone has been great here with their posting and I thank you for that, makes my job easier as a moderator of this board. :) :)

I will share an experience I had this past December during MVMCP... I was waiting for my family to come out of Alien Encounter (I refuse to do that ride, although I have done it twice, it just creeps me out)... I was talking to an older gentlemen, he was a CM, actually I think he was one step up from just a regular CM, he had one of those ear things... organizing the lines of the pictures.. He spotted a group walking by and one of them was smoking.. she tried to cup the cigarette so to speak but he spotted her.. he chased her down.. walked with her to a spot where she could put it out and stood there till she did and threw it away... I stood there with my mouth open thinking... WOW.. that is the first time I have seen that.. When he came back.. I said BRAVO to you...he told me some horror stories of encountering smokers who would not listen to him.. but that was one CM that was paying attention and doing his job..

BibbidyBobbidyBoo- I like your line "Is THIS a designated smoking area?" I think I'll use it next time!

Also, Kylara, You brought up a good point about safety! Those who do not abide by the rules risk burning people, especially short little kiddos!

I remember saying to Ted on one of our previous trips that I was going to get burned by somebody's cigarette before the week was over! With crowds that tight, I wonder how often it happens!

Holly

PS THank you to all our DIS smokers who are considerate and abide by the rules!

I handle the situation in one of three ways. I am extremely allergic to smoke. I can be bedridden for days if exposed to con centrated smoke.

If I with others they have no problem handling the problem for me. If I am alone, I always take the "I'm sure you didn't know" approach. I approach them and say I'm sure you didn;t realize this is a non-smoking park. I have ALL the smoking permitted areas committed to memory. If I have a brochure with me, (It's a good practice, you leave them with no excuses) I give it to them, so they can find the nearest one.

My third way was applied only after extreme rudeness on the part of the smoker. When parties in my group approached him and told him it was non-smoking, he said he'd smoke where he damn well got the urge. and right now it was right here. My friends continued to explain that I had ashtma and allergies and had been carried out of Disney parks on 4 separate occasions on a gurney by Reedy Creek due to smoking. (Ruined my day) The guy refused to put out the cigarette. I didn't have my inhaler that day and went close enough to ask him to stop. Thinking that if he could see the effect it was having he would be more considerate of others than himself. I was sure he would be sympathetic. No he reached out with the cigarette and said "here try it. It helps me when I feel out of breath". As I drew away he followed/chased me. (not that I could run, just the faster I walked, the faster he walked). Well that was the last straw. All EIGHT of us became very verbal. He was waiting for his wife to exit a restaurant so he really couldn't leave.

He said what are you going to do call Security on me? Well, it hadn't crossed my mind, but "Yeah I think I will". I keep their number stored in my cell phone. if you don't know it just store the main number 407-824-2222. They will patch you through to security in any area you request. When the CM Security Host answered the phone with his first name, I called him by name and told him the situation. He dispatched someone immediately. Well that scared the guy off. Once our CMSH showed up we expalined all that had happened and their first concern was for me. Once they were sure I was OK they reported the guy's stats over the radio. Heighth weight, clothes etc.

Several times that day a security host would approach me (must have given my stats too), ask if I was OK and gave me a "report". They said they had been tailing the guy as he crossed from area to area and NO ONE was allowing him to light up in an unauthorized area.

A bit extremem, but then again so is my reaction to cigarette smoke. ALWAYS point out the smoker to a CM. I have learned that smoking CM's do not 'SMELL" the smoke the way we do so they do not notice it. If you point it out to them they are almost always willing to assist. When they don't I ask them to call someone else who has been trained or feels comfortable approaching a violator.

I am a smoker too. I have tried to quit and will keep trying. I have and will only smoke where smoking is allowed. In a restraunt, at home, if the seat or booth next to me is non-smoking I refuse to light up! It's not fair to the family of Non Smokers. (I hate when they seperate us by one seat. Like the smoke don't travel. I will wait for a table or booth where I'm well within a safe distance from Non-Smokers. Same at WDW. Eventhough I am a Smoker I am glad WDW has designated locations. It's the right thing to do. Just had to jump in...

Just out of curiousity does anyone know what the rules are while walking around the grounds of the resorts? I was with my kids by the pool when someone lit up by us? I was unsure of the rules and we just moved, but I was curious if anyone knew what the official rules are for the resort grounds? Thanks in advance.

the pool area at all resorts is non-smoking area. If you need assistance just approach the life guard or any other CM. They all know that the pool area is non-smoking. Smoking is only allowed in posted areas.

I would also like to add that my dearest pin trading pal is a smoker. She was so considerate and thoughtful that I began feeling inconsiderate. She was conscious of her habit every step of our way.

For the most part almost everyone I have ever encountered has been that way. Very few are conscious of what they are doing and stop the moment it is brought to their attention.

Does anyone know where I can get a map or something online of the smoking areas? My mom smokes and she's worried about accidentally smoking in the wrong areas.

Thanks!

DrKnow,
Every Guidemap for each park has the layout of the "land" and a Lit/burning/smoking cigarteet in a circle designating a smoking area.

They are very well marked and it large enough to spot easily. Once you get to the general area on the map, looking for persons sitting or at the very least an ash/butt area. You will be in the right place.

Just want to add a quote I recently read...

"Rudeness is the weak man's imitation of strength." -Eric Hoffer

If everyone was as nice and considerate as the folks on this board the world would be a much more pleasant place. :D

. . . maybe WDW can have a couple of designated areas for people who bathe in an entire bottle of perfume before going to the parks. :p I'm not sure how I always find these people, but this gives me as much of a headache as cigarette smoke!!

Or, while we're on the subject, how about an area for the people who don't bathe regularly, but sweat profusely?

I'm not trying to make light of an important subject, just thought I'd add a little levity! ;)

Hope everyone is having a GREAT day!!

I love it!!

A designated stinking area. It could be the place to meet Flower from Bambi.

Actually, you make a valid point (surprise!). I don't disagree someone blowing smoke in line is out of whack. As a smoker, I only get offended at the concept that smokers in Disney are rude. Rude people are rude. So let's all not be rude! It's a simple concept...And by the way, I hope YOU are having a good day!

At my recent stay at ASMu I asked about this. They said that smoking was allowed everywhere outside EXCEPT around the pool. This seemed to be established as true since there were also ashtray type trashcans or a single ashtray stand near the entry doors in the front AND back of the main building (ie: front desk, stores, foodcourt building) presumably so you can put your cig out before you enter the building. I only smoked one cig on the long long trek from my room to the main building one time walking BEHIND all the resort room buildings... not in front where the pool would be. It was also a value season and NO ONE in sight. If I'd seen anyone during my walk, I would have put it out because they wouldn't be expecting to breathe my second hand smoke as they walked behind the buildings to their room or something! Smoking around the pool is definitely not allowed! They should probably put very visible signs up saying this so people wouldn't do it. :(

Not to defend rude smokers but the designated areas for smoking could be missed. We hadn't been in WDW for a year in the time period that they put in the designated areas. I don't use the maps(we know where we are going) and drive to the parks! I wonder if others could be in the same situation and just not know! Once I realized that the rules had changed it was no big deal to get the map and comply, but it wasn't made clear that the smoking situation had changed.
So a gentle comment to someone breaking the rules may be the first time they heard of the rules. That said there is no excuse for smoking in any line, or near children even before the new rules!

Nice to see a civil thread about smoking for a change..

I'm curious about the incidents you are all reporting here though - about people walking around the parks smoking, smoking in lines, etc.. We were there for two weeks - from Sept. 9th to September 23rd of 2001 and never saw anyone smoking where they shouldn't have been..

Is the time frame of experiences you're all talking about SINCE that dreadful day of 9/11? If so, it makes me wonder if it has anything to do with the changes in the way people think now.. A rather cavalier "I-could-die-tomorrow-so-I'll-do-what-I-want-when-I-want" type thing.. I've seen peoples attitudes towards life, living, and self-absorption change dramatically since that horrible day and I'm just wondering if this is what is going on with some of these people..

Well the incident I saw takes place last November. I was sitting outside the Tiki Birds and saw a couple smoking over by the Alladin ride. A CM approached them, talked to them and pointed out a smoking area. The couple looked over toward the smoking area as it was pointed out to them. Then the CM left and they continued to smoke right where they were. When they saw another CM walking by they both put their cigarettes down by their side so as not to be noticed.

Continuing to speak as a smoker, 911 didn't give me a live-for-the-moment attitude. Far from it, it made me think about what I have, my family, my wife, etc., and one of the MANY things I've been evaluating ever since is smoking. I think it's more likely you never saw people smoking out of designated areas because the time frame you visited -- Sept. 9-23 -- is a very light crowd time anyway, and if you indeed meant 2001, then I'm betting it was a lighter time than usual. I still say it all comes down to "rude people are rude people," whether they smoke or not. In July, there's more people, thus more rude people. Shortly after Sept 11, 2001, there were very few people, thus the percentage of rude people must have been WAY down....

Did I mention I've not had a smoke in six weeks?

Just wanted to say Congratulations to you Pat_Elliott. Here's hoping you can make your decision to stay smoke-free a lifelong commitment for your sake and for your loved ones!!!
