Not to cause a debate, but I honetly don't know: I always request nonsmoking rooms, however it seems like I always get a neighbor who smokes. The rooms of course have the nonsmoking plaque on the door, so they smoke standing outside their rooms. The only problem is then we have to walk through the smoke to get to our room. I have no problem with smokers smoking in the designated areas as I feel if I walk through that area it's my own fault, however what do you do when you can't get to your room without passing a smoker? If I'm by myself I can just turn and go the opposite way either toward the stairs or toward the elevator, however if I'm with my mom we have to use the elevators due to her scooter. For that matter we always manage to run into smokers downstairs standing next to the elevators and smoking. Usually all the nonsmoking rooms are on the same floor. Correct? If so then should these people be smoking outside their rooms? Again if I get a room on a smoking floor or if I happen to walk through a smoking area then it's my own fault, but I hate trying to get to my door or waiting for an elevator in a cloud of smoke. Should smokers be smoking outside on the walkway of their nonsmoking rooms where nonsmokers must pass by?

That's because ashtrays are usually place by the elevators. At CSR, every elevator entrance has an ashtray by it. Rooms are non-smoking but not the outside area. At least not yet.

I find the same problem with people who wear too much cologne or perfume. I can instantly detect it in an elevator and just step back out immediately before the doors close. My husband smokes, but only outside (patio, balcony, etc). I'd rather have him out there than inside smoking in a non-smoking room. As someone else said. THe inside of the room is non-smoking, not the outside. I know Shades of Green is a non-smoking hotel, but that only means the inside. THey have ashtrays set outside on the patios and balconies. I think having it that way would make a person more likely to follow the rules.

As a smoker I always request a smoking room and have only gotten 1 in the last 3 times. I have been told that the request for smoking exceeds the number of rooms. So I do smoke outside the door as directed by the CM's. The CM's tell the smokers that they can smoke outside their door when smoking rooms are unavailable. I have actually heard of CM's telling people to go ahead and smoke in the room also, when there is no smoking rooms available.

At the AKL my hubby and I smoked in the room because we requested a smoking room but didn't get one. When staff got wind of this they moved us to a smoking room. There was no smoking in that building at all! We requested a smoking room at CSR this year, hope to get one.

:rose: We too requested a smokers room as the 2 adults smoke . However I will probably only smoke in the bathroom or on walkway as DGD has asthma and being in a room filled with smoke is not a good idea so just like at home we have a sperate room for smoking and for any one whop is thinking she 's going to use the bathroom we have 2 rooms. So this should work also I do understand how non smokers feel and obviously if I saw someone using O2 headed my way I would butt it, but I don't know who is sensitve and who isn't but i certaqinly will try not to make the walkway a smokey way! :smokin: :smokin: :cheer2: :cheer2: pirate:

We've had the same problem with balconies. Quite a few trips we've been totally unable to use the balcony on our non-smoking room because someone was ALWAYS on the next balcony smoking away. Who wants to sit on their balcony and enjoy the view surrounded by a cloud of smoke? YUK! I really wish they would make it against the rules to smoke on the balconies of non-smoking rooms.

I know this is OT, but I REALLY wish there were designated smoking areas at the resorts like at the parks. I hate trying to enjoy the pool or the beach with a cloud of smoke hanging around.

I for one hate it when I'm walking to my NON-smoking room to have to breathe in the smoke of someone standing in front of a room smoking. There should be designated areas that people can smoke outside like there is at the parks.

I really despise people who are incessently condescending. I'm sure you're perfect in every way and are never rude or make an honest mistake. Gee, the second coming of Christ right here on the DIS boards, how fortunate for the rest of us poor flawed human beings. First, we didn't know we were in a non smoking room because we requested a smoking room, second, we smoked on the balcony because we have children and tend not to smoke around them.

Additionally, balconies of non-smoking rooms are also non-smoking hence the above notation.

Your reply is a little harsh. You posted "At the AKL my hubby and I smoked in the room because we requested a smoking room but didn't get one. When staff got wind of this they moved us to a smoking room. " This sounded to me like you did it out of spite. Now you are claiming it was a simple mistake. That is very different. I wish you stated that in your original post.

Okay, perhaps it sounded intentional, however that is not the case. To clarify, we checked in in the late evening, we went out on the balcony to smoke. The next day housekeeping must have seen our ashtray outside and the staff informed us of the issue. They promptly moved us to a smoking room which I requested and had in writing. It wasn't a big deal at all. I may be a smoker, but I too dislike to smell of other smoke and can't even stand for my own cigarette to be smoking in my face. It sounds weird, but true. I am quite diligent about not smoking where it is prohibited in the parks and other places on the planet. With that said, I still think people who judge others just because they don't agree with a lifestyle, well, just plain suck. I don't think it's right to impose my beliefs on others and don't expect others to do that to me. I love the DIS boards and don't want to be part of a situation where coming here is uncomfortable for myself or others, but I will speak my mind as respectfully as I can.

 You're the one who made an unclear post about your smoking habits that seemed to suggest you purposefully smoked in a non-smoking room. My reaction to your original post was exactly the same as the previous posters.

You've admitted you didn't articulate your meaning well - surely you then can see how people reacted as they did. Nobody said a thing about your lifestyle; just that it was rude to smoke in a non-smoking room. You are adding 2+2 and coming up with an overdramatic 5 my friend. Relax...you've taken responsibility for the misunderstanding and I think we all get it now.

As a non-smoker, can I throw my 2 cents in?

I really detest the smell of smoke, nevermind the health issues. I think the problem is we've all been around people who are just rude about it. I hate walking into a revolving door after someone who has just let out their last puff ahead of me. Trapped!

However, I was pleasantly surprised one evening dining on the patio of a restaurant where they apparantly allowed smoking. I had my 3 month old nephew with me, and the smoker at the next table actually got up and moved around to the other side so his smoke wouldn't bother the baby.
There were no "dirty looks" or anything from my party that would have prompted him to do so. I made sure I thanked him for his courtesy.

Wouldn't it be nice if we all treated each other in this manner - smoker or non-smoker!

I'm thinking that that lack of an ash tray would have clued you in. Just guessin'.

Yeah, it's kind of happening everywhere. It is annoying as you leave the airport too.

We had the same issue as we arrived to our resort on our last visit (POP). I said loudly to my DH as we approached the room with our baby sleeping in the stroller "I thought they said it was a non-smoking room!"

It turns out they quit smoking right in front of our room. That was nice, I feel bad that I didn't approach it a little nicer though.

1) I guess rudeness and selfishness shows not bounds.
2) I wonder how you can possibly survive in a non-smoking restaurant.
3) You poor, poor people.
4) God must have something against you.
5) Imagine, being put into a non-smoking room!
6) Life can be cruel!
7) Next, they will tell you smoking is hazardous to your health.
8) The audacity of some people!
