Smoking Etiquette Question

I think this problem is going to get much worse. In certain situations I think all the bans will increase the incidence of smokers smoking where they are not supposed too.

from all the numbers I have seen 20% or 1 in 5 Adult Americans is a smoker.

My belief the VAST majority of those smokers will be more than glad to follow reasonable smoking rules. Most of them are willing to not smoke in resteraunts if they can just step outside. Most would be glad to go out on a balcony if they are given a non smoking room.

When confronted with unreasonable rules I also believe the vast majority will not follow the rules. Completely non smoking hotel? You KNOW people are smoking in the bathrooms. 5 hour layover in the airport with no smoking lounge? Once again I have smelled smoke in so many airport bathrooms I can't count them.

I have heard people say the parks should be completely non smoking. That would be the WORST thing you could do to non-smokers. The vast majority of smokers now limit their activity to the desiganted area's. Take those away and they will do it while walking up main street USA.
The most any cast member will ever do is say "Excuse me sir there is no smoking in the parks".

If a non-smoker is truly concerned about second hand smoke they would support reasonable accomidations for smokers. I believe that would go farther towards lowering their exposure.

:thumbsup2 I firmly believe that there should be smoking sections in the Parks. I wont visit DL for this reason. However in Resorts this is a problem. I am a smoker and always get a NON Smoking room. Like at home I only smoke outside. I am usually the only adult with children, so I wont walk away from the room door to have a cigarette.

Also, please remember that many of WDW are from other countries where Smoking segregation in non existant! For them this is a concept hard to grasp!

I'm an ex-smoker so I can see both sides. I see no problem with smokers if they follow the rules (which I think, at Disney anyway, are quite reasonable). To comment on the "other countries" folk, I must admit, for the most part, the people I saw smoking while strolling along Main St. or WS at Epcot, almost always had an accent. I think it's true, with the exception of some of Western Europe, a lot of nationalities have no idea of the uproar they are causing and they don't understand all the fuss of smoking where they shouldn't. But, I think slowly but surely, no smoking laws will infiltrate much of the world in time.

I really despise people who are incessently condescending. I'm sure you're perfect in every way and are never rude or make an honest mistake. Gee, the second coming of Christ right here on the DIS boards, how fortunate for the rest of us poor flawed human beings. First, we didn't know we were in a non smoking room because we requested a smoking room, second, we smoked on the balcony because we have children and tend not to smoke around them.

Additionally, balconies of non-smoking rooms are also non-smoking hence the above notation.

DisneyJen0504 and PugDog....did either one of you read post number 10 after reading post 5? Apparently not, considering in post 40 I asked for people to stop mis-quoating LuvTony0508.

Let us all agree on one thing. This will never be resolved. People are going to smoke. There are going to be RUDE people who do not care about anyone else, and I'm not just talking about smokers being rude, you non-smokers can be rude also. (Yes, I am a smoker :smokin: )

Again, as I have said this is never going to be resolved and all we are doing is arguing amongst ourselves. Does anyone know me enough to think I am a bad person because I smoke? Does anyone know anyone on here well enough to think we are terrible people because we smoke? I don't know you. I don't know your family's health history. I don't know anyone's health history (HIPPA regulations!!!! and for those in the medical field, you know what I mean :smooth: )

Listen:listen: I buy my cigarettes with my hard earned money that I busted my tail bone for. I pay the hefty taxes because the government says I have to. I voted them in, my fault there too. I am a curtious smoker who follows the rules (and I listened to my parents when they told me to be kind to others even though they are not kind to me) and I smoke in the designated smoking areas, not around children, and if I see someone with an oxygen tank (usually I'm not smoking, but I know the smoke smell is on me) I'll make sure I'm downwind if at all possible!!!! I'm not typing here saying it's my right, I'm just stating, I'm paying for my habit out of pocket and with my health.

And for those of you who are sitting there thinking...well just quit...and you are wanting to type it in, but your not. I am part of the generation that had the Cigarette Advertisements every where. It was cool for people to smoke! You wanted to be like the people you idolized (they smoked) Surgeon General's warning?!?!?! Yea on the side of the cigarette pack, but who actually looked at that. I started smoking when I was 8 years old, because when I was growing up.....it was cool. Now 31 years later, I wish I could go back to that 8 year old, and tell her how much money she is going to blow on cigarettes, the smokers cough, and well, I'm probably going to die from it (if I don't get hit by a bus or something else like that). Do not judge my parents and say they were horrible for letting me smoke at an early age. They did not know. I'm sure you've done stuff as a child that you do not want your parents to know now....so do not judge my parents! And if we kept that away from our parents, think what our children are keeping secret from us!!!!

Remember, this is never going to be resolved where both parties are happy. All it is doing is bringing up ill feelings. Thus my part in this post about knowing each other. The only thing I know about each one of you is this....You like Disney. And for that one reason...I like you, I like you all.

Have a great weekend....Happy July 4th!!!!

Then it's the absolute responsibility of the person with the medical condition to avoid the smoke.

May I just interject and point out that legally this is not true in the UK and (I believe) the USA?

Citing the case of Hayward [1908] 21 Cox 692 Maidstone Assizes and Watson [1989] 2 All ER 865 CA, it is established that one must take one's victim as you find them.

It's called the "thin skull" principle - if you hit someone over the head and they die due to a medical condition whereby their bone density is especially low, the assailant is responsible for the consequences in their entirety as it is not the victim's fault that they had the condition.

The case of Blaue [1975] 1 WLR 1411 CA extended the principle to spiritual conditions; in this case an injured man refused blood on religious grounds; the same principle applied.
