I know last year they announced plans of non-smoking areas. I have heard over the past year about how bad those areas are near bathrooms and people still walking around in groups smoking. Are the areas really near the bathrooms, all of them and that bad? We would not be there a night, late anyways. I have a severely asthmatic child with other issues and one time already at DTD they had to have a medic transport for him a couple of years ago because his inhaler was not enough. We do our part to plan the best we can but we can not skip going to the bathroom.

Hopefully someone who has been can tell me the locations and how it is. Why they put things that cause medical issues in high traffic areas I do not know. Do they actually enforce this rule? Planning our trip...

While I can't help you with where the smoking areas are at Downtown Disney, the best thing for you to do is to first go to the bathroom area and smell it out. You know your son the best so you can determine what is "acceptable". If the fumes are too much, you can kindly ask the gentlema(e)n to move so your son can go to the bathroom. Many people would do this for your son's sake. However, if they don't, there's really nothing you can do as, just like your son with his allergies and other issues, smokers have their rights as well and they are confined to areas where they are allowed to smoke. The only clear way to resolve this issue is to bring it up to Disney World but usually smoking areas are near to the bathrooms. People can take care of all kinds of needs all at the same time. Notice that water fountains are usually near bathrooms as well?
