Smokers at AKL (this is not a rant thread)

DH is a smoker, dd's and I are not!! I really do not want to book a smoking room since at AKL there is no smoking on balconies this means that smoking rooms are pretty much guaranteed to smell. At home Dh only smokes outside and would not smoke in a closed up room with dd's and I. Have any of you non-smoker's been in a smoking room? How bad was it?

Anyway, where are the outdoor smoking areas at the resort? I'm hoping that there are several places that DH could walk to from the room. I wonder if I could request a room close to an outdoor smoking area.

Thanks in advance for any information!!

We always request a non smoking room so I can't help you on how a smoking room would be.

As for a smoking places outside the only real place I remember is in the very front just off the entrance towards the bus stops. There is also a smoking area just outside the doors by Boma's and Jiko's. He can also smoke by the pool.

We took the Sunset Safari once (via concierge level) and the guides told us that at AKL the only places you are allowed to smoke are out front, near the buses, by the pool, or on your balcony/room if you are NOT facing a savannah.

At the time...I was a smoker...and it was no prob for me to go down to the pool area (or out the front) for my smoke.

I've seen people smoke by the pool area, they even have those little 'cigarette' trash bins around there. I would definitely ask for a room near the lobby or close to an elevator/door that will lead your DH outside to the pool area. Walking to the bus stop area is kind of far, imo.

Goodluck!

Thanks! I did do a search (which I should've done to begin with - sorry) and got some information. This has gotten to be such a big issue in our family and now it's trickling over into other parts of our lives!! I was a smoker many years ago and know how hard it can be to quit, but I have found my life to be so much more hassle free as a non-smoker. I'm feeling a little resentful of dh for adding another element to my ongoing saga of trying to decide on a resort. He did not accompany us on our last 2 trips and our first trip (we stayed at CBR) we didn't know any better and he just smoked outside in the courtyard like areas so this is the first time this has come up.

Thanks for letting me ramble!! If any others from mixed (smoking/non smoking) families have any advice or input I'd love to hear it!!

Don't!

Trust me - the walk to an outdoor area isn't THAT far if you are able bodied!

There are ashtrays all over the pool area, big standing ashtrays outside jiko/boma and Mara (also near the pool - keep in mind, the only "outdoor areas" are either the pool, or out front near the valet/gift shop entrance - as most of the land is for the animals).

Seriously - if he wants his smoke...he'll walk for it! :)

I had a smoking room on my first visit there. (with my Mom the smoker) I don't recall it being bad at all.

DH is still struggling to quit. He thought I didn't notice when he went for a walk at night to have a smoke out front....

Maybe next trip he won't need to take that walk!
