*No to Smoking!*
After a whole year of quietly reading and learning (Thanks Everybody!) from this board, this is the topic that has finally brought me out of the woodwork.
My husband and I (no kids) took our first Disney cruise last September. We thoroughly enjoyed every part that we could, but were very frustrated at night when every place we wanted to go into (for drinks and entertainment) was full of smoke. We spent each evening sitting in the non-smoking Promenade Lounge and strolling the decks feeling a bit "cast out." I wish we could enjoy all parts of the cruise. DCL needs to really improve their ventilation system if they are going to continue to cater to the minority who foul the air for the majority. I have my fingers crossed for this year's cruise - hoping for less smokers and better air.
Sorry my first post has to be a negative one. I really enjoy all the fun and helpful information I find here.

As an ex-smoker (Clean for nearly 6 years now) and someone who is very easily bothered by second-hand smoke, I must state that I have never been adversely affected during both our DCL-cruises.
The discrimination of smokers in the US should IMHO have its limits. Smokers have rights, too!!

How is it on a cruise--sitting by the Micky Mouse Pool???? Maybe if we NON-SMOKERS would speak up--and politely ask the person smoking to kindly put their cigarette out--maybe that would help. I am planning on doing just that. Most of the time they will do it--some give you a dirty look---but do it anyway...with a bad attitude.
I did just this when someone started to light up near the Mickey pool. I kindly informed them that it was a non-smoking area.

I did the same at WDW. I was sitting on a bench when 3 or 4 people came over and sat on the bench next to me and lit up. I looked on my map, then informed them this was a non-smoking area, and told them where the smoking area was. Now, I did that because I was sitting there first. If I was walking by and saw them smoking, I would not have sat down or even said anything, but since I was already there and it was NOT a designated smoking area, I felt I had the right to speak up!

I was bummed to find the smoking is allowed on the secret deck 7... and it seemed like they were all smokers when I was back there. Yuck.

from time to time, they are probably already aware of this poll :)

100% smoke free. The damage done by passive smoking to children is undeniable. I can't see why this issue is even discussed in society any more. I insist my employees are non tobacco users.........

I just Emailed Disney about the smoking around resort pools, asking them to please limit smoking areas to "one side of the pool" so smokers and non-smokers could go to their respective corners. I got a call back, of course acknowledging nothing and agreeing to nothing. It was frustrating -- I would have rather they didn't even call. A form letter would have been more responsive! What they said is "We limit smoking at the parks and otherwise we don't limit smoking outdoors." Gee, thanks -- I knew that!

I did finish the call with "Well at least you can pass along that people are writing and calling with this request" and the woman agreed to do so. So by all means, call or write Disney, but don't expect an intelligent response at this time!

Collene,

What address did you use to e-mail Disney? I am sure that a lot of other people would like to know.

Just a few words from another considerate smoker, here! :)

My DH (who also smokes) and I will be taking our first DCL vacation next spring. One of the first questions that we asked both our travel agent AND DCL directly, was about the smoking policy on the ships. We wanted to be clear about this information immediately, so that we knew the rules and restrictions even 9 months in advance of our sail date.

We always obey the smoking restrictions in the WDW parks and resort hotels. CM's have even thanked us for asking where the nearest designated smoking area is, when we've been in the parks.

We plan to smoke in only designated areas when we are on board, this spring, and are grateful that such places exist, so that we can enjoy our Disney Cruise, just like everyone else.

Although I can't really add anything to the original topic of this thread (as we have never been on a Disney Cruise - yet - so cannot offer an opinion about the current state of smoking issues), just wanted to let you all know that there are some of us smokers out there who use forethought when planning their Disney vacations and abide by the rules when on property! And we try to encourage others to do so, while they're there, so that Disney does not take smoking "priviledges" away all together. If everyone just follows the regulations - what ever they may be - and is considerate of others (both non-smokers and smokers) around them, then everyone will have the most magical time possible!

IASW Rider, thank you for being a considerate smoker. I hope you and your husband have a wonderful time on your cruise. One warning, Disney Cruise are addictive!

Your attitude is the only way to oppose the Health-Nazis!! This was exactly my way when I smoked. Try to minimise the impact on the non-smokers, but stand for your rights. Every smoker, who ignores rules by smoking where he/she isn't allowed to, helps the intolerant. I quit nearly 6 years ago and I prefer not to be bothered by smoke, but there must be a stop put to that harsh discrimination smokers in the USA have to face right now. Some people obviously don't learn out of history: The last time you tried to prohibit a vice, the only people who gained from it were the crimimals. But perhaps sometime soon I can finance my USA-vacations by smuggling some tobacco ;)

Well, I don't smoke and I detest cigarette smoke but with only two ships there is just no way DCL can make them smoke-free. They would not be able to eliminate a portion of the population as potential guests. Other cruise lines with multiple ships and multiple itineraries have more flexibility to offer smoke-free ships and cruising...the smokers have other options on that line. I just do not see this happening with DCL.

Honestly, the only time I have ever been bothered by smoke is in Beat Street, and I lived through it. :) I really did not see much smoking at ALL on decks and have never had a problem with the verandahs either. I think DCL does a good job now of limiting smoking to certain areas.

Michele,

Is this your opinion or Disney's opinion?

You may not have a problem with smoke but many people do. The question here is whether more acommodations should be made for non-smokers such as non-smoking clubs, non-smoking pools and smokers with starboard verandahs - non-smokers with port. It appears from the poll that 75% of those responding would like at least a few simple changes made.

Michelle
I would have to agree with duckielucky, according to the poll at least 75% would like it banned or more restrictions. I bet if Disney changed to smoke free they would still sell out most cruises.

The smokers would have a choice to not smoke(at all) or go on another cruise line.Nobody forces anybody with that decision.

I'm offended by this comment! I am also a considerate smoker and I really enjoy the Disney Cruise Line. We have done a 3 day, a 4 day, and are going on a 7 day next month. If the boat became smoke free we would have no choice and would have to book another line. I'm not going to debate whether or not it is good for you or whether it would be healthier to quit. What I will tell you is that if my husband and I attempted to not smoke for 7 days, it would be the vacation from h%$#! Have you ever been around a smoker who is trying to quit? It's not pleasant. The other alternative would be to quit completely, months in advance I guess but I don't think that you have the right to tell me to do that. You don't smoke...good for you! But I believe we still have freedom of choice here.

Michele, Is that your opinion or Disney's?

By the way Duckielucky I think that comment was just plain rude to Michelle. Of course it was her opinion and nobody else's just as your comments are your opinions and certainly not mine!

Sorry if you were offended by my post. But facts are facts and nobody should force non-smokers to in-hale second hand smoke. You may be a considerate smoker, but the fact is cigarette smoke
rauch25.gif
does stink and is hazardous to everybody's heath.
Non-smokers would like to go to a club on the Magic and Wonder and not have to come out stinking,de-contaminate the clothes, take a shower immediateley, etc.

I don't have a problem with anybody smoking in there own homes(pity the children).....but DON"T make me in-hale your smoke somewhere else.

I knew sooner or later this would turn ugly.:(
