smelling books....

One time i had an old copy of lord of the rings from the library that smelled like rain.

I love the smell of books too! I have never tried a kindle, so I don't know if I would like it of not, but I couldn't imagine books ever being out of print - that would be a shocking day when school systems nationwide could afford for students to read books electronically.

I have to say that I absolutely LOVE the smell and feel of a book. I wouldn't sway from buying an e-reader for that reason, though.

And I know it's slightly OT, but the part I highlighted above is an excellent point, except that I do think standard school textbooks will eventually be replaced with ebooks. Sure there are problems with them, not the least of which being cost per unit and durablility (what with kids toting them around and dropping them. :headache: ).
But think about this: if the durability issue were solved, the price issue would also be solved. After the initial cost to purchase the units, they would virtually pay for themselves after a year or two of use! ebooks are considerably less expensive than standard books, so the cost to load them and keep them up to date would be far less than using standard. I personally think it's the way to go. Imagine kids only having to tote a little e reader home instead of 4 or 5 heavy textbooks in his backpack! How nice would that be??

In addition to the things you've mentioned, they could be updated with just a quick download.

As information changes, so could your textbook.

I think the future of reading via electronic devices is exciting.
The updating of textbooks electronically has tremendous potential.

They just need to put a "scratch and sniff" of "old book smell" on the electronic device.

Wow, this has really opened a "can of worms" and gotten a lot of people to talk about books.

I started the thread because of the email show and Julie's comment...and the fact that my DH likes to smell his magazines. (he likes the smell of new tires too, uck)

I, on the other hand, hate the smells. I would love to have a Kindle. But I also want a iphone, netbook, flat screen TV....so which comes first?

I believe I would read more with a Kindle, I really do. I know my health would be better with a Kindle as well.....

I hate the smells of some books/magazines because I am allergic to most chemical smells. I hate having reactions to those smells and getting sick. I especially hate it when the magazines put in cologne advertisements. I subscribe to very few magazines and pick them only by what is stuffed into them when I get them. Two that I get just started including smelly cologne ads. I have to open them and quickly rip them out and toss the ads. I must be careful not to scratch the sniff thing or open the little flap and let the smell out. I have thought about writing those magazines and asking why, but I know why...money... So I will just continue to do my best to avoid them and when the subscription runs out I will notrenew...

I can't go down the soap isle at grocery stores but I still shop there...I can't go into candle stores at the mall but I still go to the mall....so IF I read on a Kindle, because it doesn't smell, I will still go to a bookstore or library...I love that my library has lots online now and I can check things from home.

Kevin has made great points about schools and the Kindle. Now that my DD is in college and I am buying her books, I can see where an instant update would be perfect. Plus the cost of these college books....really a paperback book for over $120!!!??? When the used one cost me $10.00? I have found a great source for new and used books online. It is a site called Alibris. I get most of her used books from there. I saved almost $400 just this past semester on books.

Everyone has their reasons to own a Kindle....easy to use, large print, storage issues, etc.....
....I want a Kindle for another reason.....

I know I will be able to breath better because of it!!! :)

Yes, this would be an AMAZING tool for college! And in high school I would have loved not having to carry all my books, I just don't ever see public schools coming up with the upfront money (but like others mentioned it would save money long term). I couldn't imagine young kids having one provided by the school, I am just thinking of all the kids that had to dig through the garbages/dumpsters after accidentally throwing out their retainers, :rotfl: Thank god I was not one of them!

I want to point out that some Universities are doing this, not with e-readers, but by having all the core reading online in PDF file. I haven't bought any text books this year for my course, plus it really does save lugging them around. I often print off my reading, so annotation is easier, but you don't have to.

All our journals are also online, and searchable. I don't know how people go through university without it now!

It is only a short period of time before e-readers become common place, at least in University classes.
