Smartphones

I say, let hubby have his Droid. Seems like a small enough luxury...could be worse, he could want a sports car.:lmao::confused3

Seriously, though. I love my iPhone. Completely worth every penny..and I have Internet at home too.

OP, I'm kinda like you. My cellphone was an old flip phone without a camera. I used it mainly to keep in touch with the kids (via texting more than anything else). DH on the other hand, likes the newest gadgets and several months ago got a blackberry.

He was riding me for months and months to upgrade to a smartphone. I resisted until my beloved ipod would only stay charged for 10 minutes. Rather than get a new ipod, and still have to carry a camera and phone, I caved and got a mytouch slide (tmobile).

I gotta say, so far, I love it. It has the genius button so you just have to speak to it and it will send your text / email without touching the buttons. I have also figured out how to personalize it with Mickey & Friends. It'll take me years to figure it all out, but that's ok. I plan to keep it a long long time.

I vote let him have his droid. My wife and I both have one of the original droids. Just got the latest version of Andriod OS installed, and it rocks. Even got Flash working so I can play games on Facebook.

Let's see the iPhone do that. :rolleyes1

The only thing I could justify it is getting rid of our home internet...since the phones have it. But DH threw a fit at that idea.

True, both the smartphone and your PC/laptop are sources for the internet, but (unless you have the ability to "tether" your smartphone to your home computer), the smartphone (IMO) is not a "complete" replacement for the computer (as the apps on any smartphone are watered-down versions of the websites we know and love).

That is just plain wrong. Verizon's brain wash. For example, the moto Droid, with the new 2.2 upgrade, you will have an option to turn off 3G data at any time. You can just use wifi without incurring any 3G data charge. And Verizon still would charge you $30 just for having the Droid. And you can change the settings to never check emails automatically.

CoolDisneyCat is right -- some smartphones (such as the BlackBerry family) do require a data plan, because of the constant pulling of e-mail (which is the function all BBs were built-on).

Also, if you work for an employer with a national presence (such as a government agency or a large retailer), you can get significant discounts with VZW (and the other carriers) -- it's worth checking-out -- especially if you go with a smartphone with a data plan.

For those of you who are budget-minded, and want a device with a QWERTY keyboard that only does texts and e-mail, Peek Mobile is worth checking-out.

As Peek works off T-Mobile's national network, it works everywhere T-Mobile does...

I agree. OP, if you don't see the need for it and he does, why not let him upgrade and you keep a non-smartphone. Seems like a win/win situation. I have a Droid and I love it. Maybe I don't need it - I could have kept using my older phone. But why should I? I enjoy being able to hop online wherever I am, and I love the apps and the GPS navigation I have on the Droid. I'd never drop my home internet and just rely on my Droid, but I enjoy having both. It's worth the cost to me, and it sounds like your husband feels that way as well.

Dis_Dreamin, how did you get Flash working? I finally got my Froyo update last night and I read that you have to download Flash from the marketplace after updating, but I can't find it. What am I doing wrong?
