Small yet thoughtful gestures for a SO's birthday

Other than the obvious, like a cake, gifts and dinner out, what are some nice, thoughtful, maybe even unexpected gestures you might do for your SO on their birthday? What are some that you might like them to do for you on yours.

Okay well that leaves out the favorite no cost option. (though a good back rub and foot massage goes great with it)

Usually his favorite cake, small things he may have mentioned wearing out or needing but keeps forgetting. Birthday card in his lunch box if it's a work day. Doing one of the things he usually does around the house (mow the lawn),

We don't usually do big gifts as if it something we need we get it anyway.

Last time DD cleaned out his car including windows and vacuuming it, scrubbing the mats.

how about things like a note in the fridge that he will see when he gets milk for his coffee, a message on his work voicemail. A little treat that he likes. DH loves sunflower seeds so pick some up once in a while when I am out.

On a serious note:

I've put love notes in jackets, tucked new shirts in luggage, put gift cards for MP3s inside of wallets and slipped chocolates into laptop cases, among other things.

I just think of little things DH loves and put them in places where he will definitely find them, but not at that exact moment.
