Small Suggestion

Unfortunately, there are some nasty, clueless parents out there.

We have seen the changing of dirty diapers in all sorts of inappropriate places and have been known to say something to the offending parent.

Where is a vomit smiley when you need it?

Some people are just thoughtless. Or just plain rude and uncaring.

Changing a baby's diaper where people are eating is beyond rude. It is unsanitary and disgusting.

That is so gross.

Speaking of gross, I was in the 50's prime TIme Cafe on our last trip. My DD6 was taking a very long time going to the bathroom & I was waiting outside of the stall for her, directly across from the changing table. There was a line to use the table. I must have seen 10 mothers come in & change diapers and maybe 2 of them washed their hands afterwards. And most of them were poopy diapers. And this is in a restaurant. I was SO grossed out. I have a baby & a 5 & 6 year old and I'm often alone with them in restaurants but I still ALWAYS manage to wash my hands. The other gross thing was that almost no one used a changing pad. So they laid their baby down where someone else just changed a poop. I sometimes forget my pad, but I always at least put down some paper towels. The whole thing just totally made me lose my appetite!

This reminds me of a story when I was in college 10 years ago. I was working in a sporting goods store at the time, and on this particular day, at one of the registers closest to the parking lot (we were in a mall and had an outside entrance -sweet location!) Anyway, a woman approaches my register with her stroller and a child of about 2-3 standing next to her. She politely asks "can you throw this away for me?" Not seeing what it was, I told her yes, and she proceeded to hand me a very soggy, warm, wet diaper! I suppose I should be thankful that it was only wet.

Now, diapers don't gross me out, not even the messiest ones. I'll tackle that any day. To me, vomit is far more disgusting. :rotfl: And I suppose I should be grateful she didn't just throw the diaper on the ground in the parking lot on her way out (a pet peeve of mine whenever I see that). Still, I thought that was kind of odd -she could have just asked me to hand her the trash can behind me or something.

As far as changing your child in public? I honestly don't have a problem with people doing it in their car, or the child's stroller, or even a park bench when a changing pad is used. Sometimes a bathroom isn't close by, and a change can't wait. But to do it in a restaurant, where people eat? And then to try to leave the diaper in the booth? That's just nasty.

I have never seen that and am totally shocked that someone could be that rude to do something like that!

I have however witnessed a woman change her baby in her lap while on an airplane!

I know that the bathrooms on planes are small and all but I just found it rude!she had the aisle seat and i had the aisle seat next to her. not to mention the other people sitting next to her the guy(had the window seat) and his wife(was in the middle). It was not a pee diaper either! YUCKO!

Not only are airplane bathrooms small, its also VERY dangerous if you hit turbulence. I would prefer a mother change her child on her lap than another seat, while avoiding the lavatory altogether!

I do find it disgustingly rude to change your child in a booth at a restaurant. That is nothing that cannot wait 2 seconds to walk to the bathroom.

While that must have been very unpleasant for you, in her defense, not all airplane lavs have changing tables, and those that do are so small that only younger infants will even fit on them. Maybe she could have used the one in the restroom, however it's not always possible.

Changing a baby at a restaurant table - Gross, Ick, Eewwww. Wouldn't do it at home on my kitchen table, so I certainly wouldn't do it elsewhere. That is just disgusting.

But they do give us food and drink in our airline seats, so I don't see much difference between what the woman in the airplane did, and what the one in the reasturant did. Even if there is not a changing table on the airplane, the mom could have put the baby on top of the toilet seat, or on a towel on the ground by the lav. Who wants to sit next to someone why they change a dirty, smelly diaper? That's gross!

pirate: Arggggg....these stories pain me. Here's another place to avoid: On another thread, I heard about a mom who changed a baby on top of the table (no pad either) near the pool at Wilderness Lodge. :scared1:

A little off topic but....(and I know there are many dog lovers out there. Don't flame me but I don't have any pets.) So you can imagine my dismay when I go to the grocery store, pharmacy or restaurant and people have their dogs with them. Now that grosses me out as much as the diapers.

Okay...I can "out gross" you, but it has nothing to do with diapers.

During our November trip, one day there was a torrential downpour about lunch time. We ducked into Casey's Corner for hot dogs. A young couple came in about the same time and got the table next to us. There were 4 seats at our table (we needed 5), there were 3 at theirs. The couple sat at the table (they didn't order anything) and the girls put her foot up on the extra chair, ignoring the fact the we were alternately standing and eating so the kids could sit and eat. The young "lady" then put her other foot up on the table, :scared1: removed her shoe and sock, :scared1: :scared1: places them on the table, :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: and proceeded to pick her blisters! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:
In the process placing her used band-aids and skin bits on the table! :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Ok. That is just disgusting. While I have changed my son in his stroller before, I've never changed him on or near a table where food is. That's just gross. I will also admit that rather than carry him to the front of the plane on the way home Saturday, my mom and I made my hubby stand in the aisle, and we laid my son on the middle seat and changed his dirty diaper, only to hand it off to my hubby who took it back to the flight attendant to ask how to dispose of it properly. We changed/cleaned him quick enough that the smell didn't linger.

We also changed him on a bench at Epcot, but laid his blanket down first.

Sometimes it's tough to be a parent of a child in diapers. But, I'd never stoop so low as to change my kid in a booth or near a table in a restaurant. Gross.

That's pretty bad. However, I will admit that we changed our dd's diaper on the plane without going to the bathroom. There was some turbulence, enough that I didn't feel comfortable walking with her all the way to the back of the plane, so we changed her in our aisle (we had all three seats, and she stood up in my lap while I changed her wet diaper, which dh then threw out).

Yeah, but you had extenuating circumstances, not just pure laziness! God forbid your DD *fell* in the bathroom! Eeep!

That is just too gross!!
Luckily is has been a long time since my DS's were in the need of a diaper change. (They are 11 & about to be 10 in a few days.) However, we were out to eat with my in laws a few months ago. It was my DH's parents, his brother, his brother's wife, and his brother's son. My m.i.l. was baby sitting my nephews less than month old son, so he was there, too. All together we had 10, including the infant. Well they had us on the inclosed patio, but we were the only ones there at the time. When I noticed that he needed a diaper change. My m.i.l. suggested that I just use and empty chair and change him there instead of taking him all the way to the bathroom. I told her that I would rather change him in the bathroom b/c it would be more comfortable for him and I would need to wash my hands anyway. Just the thought of changing a diaper near the table grosses me out. I might be kinda be able to understand it if there were no diaper changing stations in the bathrooms. Luckily now days, most places have them in not only the women's but the men's bathrooms. I would rather walk out to my car, and change them in my car than at the table. In fact when mine were in diapers I carried small scented trash bags in my car just in case I had to change them in the car.

Ditto this. Our favourite little mom and pop restaruant here has no changing table in their bathrooms (real hole in the wall, but the food is sooooooo good), that often times, when our son needs a diaper change, I'll walk back out to the car and change him on the seat of the car.

My DS is 2 we are still working on potty training. Anyway we went to eat at Rose and Crown. I tell my DH I have to go change DS so I go to the restroom no changing station. So then I had to walk across to the other restroom. Of Course it would have been easier to change him at the table but eww gross.

Oh and if you care to notice you will be amazed how many people don't wash their hands. It really is disgusting.

or the ones that do just run their hands under the water, and nothing else. My DS9 insist on singing the birthday song at least twice in his head and scrubbing every finger and area of his hand before he's done. I'ld rather have them over do it, than under do it.

I would never lay my child on the top of the toilet seat or the floor of a bathroom. Do you know how many germs are lurking? Not to mention the airlplane can get kinda bumpy and you never know what misses the toilet and lands on the floor!
