Small contract different use year

There are a plethora of SSR contracts, absolutely no need to go with a different use year. Even if it cost a couple more dollars per point I would pay more to avoid the second. I have multiple use years and don't have problems navigating it but I don't think a SSR unicorn exists that makes it worth getting a second UY.

Agree with the advice everybody else gave you. I wish we had fewer UYs but at least ours are all big enough to be used independently with banking and borrowing if we want and we typically take shorter trips in smaller units, even still we will be ditching at least one UY at some point.

I would just keep borrowing out for the extra points until you find something you like in your UY.

Might be an unpopular opinion but contracts below 50 points can be a real pain to use and maximise
A different UY? That’s almost guaranteeing you will run into an issue down the line whereby you could orphan points

I have been convinced to only purchase the same use year.

Most likely it will be on an SSR contract but I will continue to track other resort options.

As I mentioned earlier I have time. I do not need any 2025 points unless I can find and close on any contract by January. Anything after a deal by November I only need 2026 or 2027 points.

FWIW,

I have a reservation in Jan using combined UY contracts. Member services *was* able to transfer banked points from one contract/UY to the other... they had to put me on hold and talk to someone in 'back office' or whatever. But I was able to use banked points across UYs.

That being said, id rather have one UY too...

Good Luck!
Have Fun!

I’ve heard one of the other issues of different UY is that after transferring the points, they don’t work on the online system for 7 month trading home priority booking without calling member services. Is that right?

@Sandisw to the rescue below! She knows everything about DVC :smickey: Thanks!

As many have already said, I would stick with one UY. I thought I could handle multiple UYs and memberships; however, I find it confusing to track and anticipate having orphaned points. I don't like making a reservation with points from X UY/membership plus points from Y UY/membership.

How many points? I am hoping I can do this with some banked points that would otherwise be orphaned.

I have multiple use years, and do not find it to be a problem. I will borrow from one use year to complete a booking and bank the remainder from the other use year, then do the same but with the opposite use year for the following year.

My point distribution would be 180 and 50 points is your distribution of points similar?

I have since added on to my smaller contract, but yes. I would borrow from my first one to book one year and bank the smaller contract, then use the banked points plus the necessary points to fill a reservation borrow if necessary or bank left over points, then use the other contract.

I am thinking of buying a small contract, but the pickings are slim for our use year. How does it work if our second contract is a different use year? Do I have to have the points transferred before I make a reservation?

We have 180 points at SSR-August use year. My preference is to buy 50 points at SSR with an August use year but if none become available might consider buying a contract with a different use year.

After taking our last trip and knowing we are going again next year we plan to start going every odd year after that. We plan to go for 9 nights and book a 2 bedroom so I believe on average 460 points will work. Most likely we will rotate among all the unrestricted resorts for the next 5 or 6 trips at least. If points become a problem we will also book one of the 3 1 bedroom 2bath resorts as a point saver. I just want to understand what issues I face with a second use year.
I agree with everyone else. I have multiple UYs as well. But each UY has about 250 or. so points. As I rent studios, I have no trouble making multiple full trips out of each contract. An add-of 50 points in a different UY would make little sense here. If I had a 50 point alternate UY contract, I think I'd end up booking the key dates (weekends or holidays) with the main contract at 11 months and then hoping at 7 months I could fill in the missing dates (Tuesdays, Wednesdays) with the other UY. Just something to think about.
