So I was putting off having my knees replaced, and put it off once again when my father was diagnosed with cancer -- I told my orthopedic surgeon that I needed to be available for my mother. His response: "If you can't walk, how can you help anyone?"

My orthopedic surgeon originally sent me for PT for the knees (to "strengthen the muscles around the knees"). I came back from PT and told him it really didn't help. He said the only thing that would help would be to get them replaced.

So October 2021 I had the right one done (Northwestern Huntley -- they were AMAZING), and March 2022 (Sherman Elgin -- not so amazing, but they got it done). I actually liked the second PT better - they had an app (Healow) that had videos of all of the exercises and would count them out for me. It also reported to my PT that I was keeping up.

Just do it. My only regret is not having them done 10 years ago.
Sounds familiar - this is my reason.
My DH and I are only children with 4 elderly parents where some need our help more than others. I really need to just do it and be done with it.

I was referred to physical therapy 6 years ago. Put it off because my insurance would not cover it. After further testing, the mobility issue would not have been helped. My joint stiffness was cause by an allergic reaction to blood pressure medicine that triggered an autoimmunity issue.

Luckily I've never needed it. Almost did for my sprained knee, but it ended up healing fine on just rest.

My son is a physical therapist. He is well trained and now trains students and works in sports medicine. He spent many years working with the best surgeons in the area we live in and now lives in a metro area and works for a huge hospital system.

I think the three year doctoral course after four years of college must be similar at all universities, but it is the type of clinic the practitioner works at after that makes the difference. Working at a bigger clinic with surgeons offers more experience IMO.

DH and I have both seen former colleagues of his and they are experienced and no-nonsense. We both have benefited from their treatment since they worked with our surgeons.

I am working on getting pt for my knees since my latest x-rays and mri show OA and some issues with kneecap. I had a cortisone shot last week so i get my appointment soon I figure out insurance and coordinating my parents' stuff and my other appointments. I might get pt for my feet and possible hands with tendon issues.
I had pt in past for neck and back after a car accident and that was someone at low speed hitting our parked car.

My first PT was for balance training, which didn't work. Balance training works with training either the right or the left side of the brain to take over for the other side, but my problem was mid-brain, so it did not help. Then I had PT for vocal cord dysfunction.
Currently in PT for a hip and/or back issue. I'm not sure I've been diagnosed correctly, as the original problem remains, but I've gained a lot of strength back, which has helped alot.
Next I'll have speech PT and PT where they will do the Epley maneuver for balance issues. I am so ready for this all to be resolved!
