Ugh. My mother made those weird things for pot luck. they always had those tiny marshmallows with stuff that did not belong in jello!
Yeah never got that. I think Jell-O pushed that after WWII and the early fiftys.

It was never more than just OK for me. Now I tend to avoid it unless it’s the only vegetable dish offered, then I’ll take a small amount to be polite.

I never liked green beans prepared in any manner, but DW and kids like the casserole so it’s sometimes made for holidays. I don’t eat any.

Our Thankgsivings included "Sunshine Salad" which was basically shredded carrots, pineapple tibbits and lemon jello. My grandmother (who is from Massachusetts) started making that at some point in the 60s, probably earlier. I love it, it's refreshing, but I don't make it at all.

This site says it's a "Classic Southern Recipe" but clearly no one in my family was ever from the south. https://www.lanascooking.com/sunshine-salad/

I don't like it at all, but I don't like any vegetable really. I think only my DH and my mom like GBC so it doesn't make it on the table for any holiday.

I was looking at recipes from that era and started a Pinterest Our Parents Ate What? Some of the pics are hilarious!
Oh my gosh, I just looked up that board. - I don't know how they served some of those with a straight face!!

Just read on NJ.com that it was invented by a New Jersey resident who passed last year at the age of 92.

My husband never liked them either but I cook them in the oven with garlic and olive oil and he loves them. Everything is better with garlic!

I don’t like it at all. I don’t even like to look at it. But it is one of the things that I bring to thanksgiving dinner because everyone else likes it

I like it enough to eat it if I happen to be somewhere that it is offered. However, we typically have a small Thanksgiving at home and no one else likes it so I haven’t had it for years.

My first experience with green beans was my mother serving overcooked canned ones, so that turned me off from them for a long time.

I’ve had them a handful of times either baked like you described or sautéed in a pan mixed with other veggies. Much better, but still far from my favorite.

My dad was in the USN. We had a LOT of canned and powdered food from the commissary. I was an adult before I realized I don’t hate vegetables just canned ones!
