slo’s WEDNESDAY 11/22 poll - Green Bean Casserole

We’ve made it a couple of times and everyone just eats the crispy onions and leaves behind the beans. I went back to our traditional green beans cooked in bacon grease and they get devoured. So I stopped bothering with the casserole. Maybe it would be different if it had been a family tradition from either of our childhoods?

I’ve never eaten a gb casserole or seen one on a table among my circle of family and friends. I knew it existed because it was always advertised in Family Circle, Woman’s Day, BH&G, etc. made with Campbell’s cream of ‘shrooms and topped with French’s fried onions. Funny that.

I like it but no one else is particularly fond of it so I gave up making it forThanksgiving.

@slo Make some for yourself. Either a small batch, or better yet split it across 2 ramekins or such -- one to eat and 1 to freeze, small enough for a couple of servings each.

I have a good friend who cant eat pork because of his religion - at least that his what he says when someone serves ham so his in laws no longer serve ham on the holidays.

Bacon wrapped scallops - no problem.

Not sure he is meant to eat shellfish either...

Same. I’ve never been served it anywhere and certainly never made it. Coming from a farm, garden veggies were staples, enjoyed in their simple splendour, mostly steamed or roasted with butter, salt and pepper. Fresh beans are almost impossible for me to come by now but I do love the colour they add to the table so I use flash-frozen uncut ones (green and yellow together) sautéed in olive oil and garlic with a few cherry tomatoes thrown in until they blister. Very nice!

It’s really a magical food! I once made chocolate covered bacon for a work potluck. Everyone was skeptical but the bacon candies were a huge hit.

Bold choice for a work potluck. That brought a smile to my face - skeptics and naysayers! If you can drown a strawberry in chocolate - why not bacon!

I loved it when I was a kid, but not so much anymore. It’s not a Thanksgiving tradition in our family. My stepmom just does cook all day in the Crock-Pot country green beans.

Yeah - we had creamed tuna fish and peas on toast - and it was a treat.

Still have fond memories of it - but don't try it now - it will ruin the memories.

We no longer make green bean casserole because there are both gluten and dairy allergies in the family. The casserole used to be a tradition inherited from my DH's family and we enjoyed it for many years. But now we have to make very plain side dishes to keep everyone safe.

I think I probably had it as a kid—we went to my aunt’s house when I was little for Thanksgiving and it seems familiar to me, but I don’t recall my mom ever making it. It has not been on the table during my adult years. It sounds like something I would like well enough but not love. I voted other.

I like it well enough, always have a serving,, and maybe a little 'seconds'. Marie has always made it for Thanksgiving, I think that's the only time we have it. She will be bringing a casserole with us to Vince's tomorrow. My mom and her mom also made it years back.

Make a treat for yourself, Sandy. Maybe Katie might like it also?
