GBC must be an East Coast thing - I had never heard of it until I started dating DW (from Boston). TO be fair, she had never head of putting things like shredded carrots in Jell-o and that's what I grew up with. We have dropped the Jell-o from the menu but GBC makes the cut every Thanksgiving. I voted it's just OK FWIW.
I think its a big thing in Minnesota and that part of the country for the most part.

Don't see it much in the Boston area - other than maybe a church pot luck type of thing.
Was probably more prevalent 20 years ago.

My husband grew up with shredded carrots and mandarin oranges in orange jello. I, on the other hand, grew up with mandarin oranges and mini marshmallows in orange jello. So I typically make both for Thanksgiving.

Also in Chicago!

Everyone I know makes it and we are in that area. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve never heard of carrots in jello. Is that one of those weird salads that aren’t really salads?

Odd, its not something I run into very often.

Of course we are Italian on one side so on Christmas and Easter was always ham lasagna raviolis meatballs and sausage.
Turkey instead of ham on Thanksgiving.
Never had it with the Irish side of the family either.

I wish I had Italian relatives. I LOVE the food.

DW had a visceral reaction to it. Seems like I saw a video about the history of Jell-o and it was something they put on the packaging as a way to sell more Jell-o. Oh look! a tricky way to get your kids to eat veggies! I think the carrots are OK. Oranges, pears pineappleand a number of other things I've seen gets a no from me.

Green Bean Casserole is a classic Thanksgiving dish since 1955. Not everyone likes it though :sad2:
What is your opinion of this Thanksgiving staple?

For Me….I love it, but no one else loves it, so therefore we don‘t have it on Thanksgiving. It’s actually been years since I’ve had, which is a bummer for me. I could make it for myself, but that seems silly. Maybe one day I’ll have it again

I love it too, but no one else does. We always have broccoli casserole at Thanksgiving, which I love even more than GBC. We'll have roasted green beans. For some reason I always associate GBC more with Easter than with Thanksgiving. No idea why, I don't think it was something my parents really made much growing up either.

We grew up with shredded carrots and canned crushed pineapple in our orange jello. It usually shows up now at 4th of July.

As for the GBC , growing up it was sometimes on table . We usually go to my SIL's since we got married and it's a NO there. My Sister makes an alternate version which she brings to the extended family Christmas party.Since she dislikes mushrooms ( as do I) most likely uses another cream soup. Also has some shredded cheese too.

Yep. Can probably be found in multiple Church/ Neighborhood cookbooks in the 50s to 70s. A sample at pot luck dinners in the day.

"I do not like it" is a huge understatement for me. I think if there is a "love it" option there should be a "loathe" it option as well, lol.

I eat no mushrooms and nothing with mushrooms in it. We have had others bring it to Thanksgiving and I cannot even handle the smell of it near me. Just.NO.

Ugh. My mother made those weird things for pot luck. they always had those tiny marshmallows with stuff that did not belong in jello!
