Well, I voted I had been to one, but I guess technically I have not. I guess a Hibachi grill cooks with coal or wood. The places I have been to use electric or natural gas to cook and are known as Mongolian BBQs.
What is everyone's understanding of what a Hibachi grill is?

Hibachi is the term used even though most are gas or electric. More accurately, this style is called teppanyaki by the Japanese and used the flat-top cooking surface.

Technically, what most Americans know as a "Hibachi restaurant" (e.g. Benihana's) is teppanyaki style cooking.

Mongolian BBQs (to me) are a similar concept (at least, cooking style), but in a buffet form.

Happy Birthday, Slo!

I've been to the one in Epcot once, and I didn't enjoy the experience. I'm something of an introvert, and didn't really enjoy eating with a bunch of strangers. My sister loved it though, so I'll probably wind up going back on our next trip.

Unfortunately the word hibachi in the states refers to two different things. What you are referring to as a hibachi grill is actually a shichirin which was originally a device for heating the home. We know it as a hibachi because the brand name. I'm not even sure the brand name still exists but much like other bandages are called band aids and other tissues are called kleenex's, other brand grills in that style are called hibachis. Fun side note. I saw one thrown at the refs during a football game. How did someone get a hibachi in there? The restaurant that usually uses a gas fired flat top is also referred to as hibachi but that is actually teppanyaki. The food is usually cooked in front of you and you get a show. They'll make a volcano onion, and cook a steak or fish or shellfish, or chicken breast, fried rice and veggies, They'll have a shrimp appetizer which they will toss and people will try to catch with their mouths. These are all cooked separately rather than all as one. Mongolion BBQ is often cooked on a flat top (usually round) here in the states. But they first got started in Taiwan. Traditionally the grill was curved rather than flat. But it's usually shaved meat that cooks very fast with some veg and a sauce (or multiple sauces) all together that you put in a bowl then hand to the cook who will cook it and then hand a finished bowl back. Some are AYCE others are per bowl. At the per bowl places, you'll often see people mashing their bowl so they can cram as much into one bowl as they can.

I have only been once 22 years ago on our honeymoon. It was fun. I keep meaning to try it again. I actually had reservations for one last year but ended up cancelling it and went to a Japanese’s BBQ place instead Which we enjoyed.

Enjoy your birthday dinner!
Thank you E&Cmom :goodvibes

(I've always loved your screen name - makes me think of the big sorcerer hat that used to be at HS - I loved that)

Have fun and Happy Birthday Slo.. We have a few by us and we will eat at them every once in a while. If you have a good cook that can be entertaining it can be fun.

Fun but the novelty wears thin pretty quickly. Plus my group are so picky most of the food is lost on them. You've probably had dinner and might be headed home by now. hope you had a great birthday dinner Sandy!

We had an awesome cook. My mom tipped him $20 and then my dad didn’t know this and gave him $20. He was incredibly grateful. Those places aren’t cheap, so I was also grateful for my parents taking my DH and I out for my birthday 🙂
My family loves hibachi!

Enjoy your birthday dinner!
