When I see pictures of things I used to play with, I get flooded with wonderful memories. I often wonder what wonderful memories today’s children will have, in regards to toys. When my girls were little, I had an away bag with items they only enjoyed when we were away (a Magic Slate, which is what the below picture is called, was in their bag). Today’s kids get their parents phone, iPad or their own iPad. When patients come into our office, the first thing they do with their kids is hand them their phone, unless the child brings in their own iPad. Almost never do I see I child look at a children’s book, carry a doll or truck and etc - it’s kinda sad. They get a phone with the volume loud enough for everyone in the office to hear what they are watching, and their parents are just fine with everyone listening to their child’s cartoon show 🙄 This poll isn’t about that though, this poll is about the Magic Slate. So let’s find out today who has enjoyed this fun toy. Give us your magically written answer today…..

Did you have a Magic Slate when you were a child?
If you have children, did you buy them for your child(ren)?
(multiple choice)

For Me……Yes, I played with them and so did my kids. My parents took road trips for our vacations, we never flew, so the magic slate was always something I had in the car. I remember taking them into restaurants to play Hangman (I loved playing Hangman with my parents or grandparents). I remember always wanting a new one if the theme of it was something I wanted. My kids did enjoy them too, but not as much as me, because restaurants had the children’s menus with crayons, so no need for it there and my girls loved to color, so they always had a coloring book with colored pencils.

I definitely played with Magic slate and so did my children. I don't know if my grandchildren played with them, though. I don't think so.

We used to take long road trips with the kids in the days when you had to look out the window instead of at a video screen. Toys like this really helped pass the time. :)

I do remember them but to save my life can't remember if it was me or my son playing with one. Well, I mean, if it was my son it was me playing with him.

Same here !!! We used to get them for Christmas

I definitely played with them! I think I probably gave one to DS as well, but don't remember him being particularly into them.

I recall using them. I recall getting tears in the plastic overlays as well as me digging in to the somewhat soft black backing and making dents and grooves. We had them for Natalie and Vince but I don't think for the grandkids. We did have Etch-a-Sketch's for them though.

Yes - I had one (or more) and the paint with water books and coloring books and crayons, of course. I was never particularly crafty/creative though. My favorite way to quietly pass the time was with a book. :goodvibes

I definitely had it as a child, but never heard the name Magic Slate. I think DS had one too at some point, but for drawing like that, played more with a Magna Doodle.

We only took one, two week, summer vacation each year when I was growing up. It was a road trip from the Midwest to Florida, so two days driving down, two days driving back. We always got a magic slate, a new coloring book or activity book, and a few other little items to keep us occupied in the car. We each had a bag to put all our items in, and we had to take them indoors with us at meal stops because the magic slate was a layer of wax, just like crayons. If it got left in the hot car, it melted. I can still hear that sound when you lifted the plastic sheet to erase the drawing . . .

I thought this was actually going to be a post about vintage iPads, since I use my first gen iPad Mini as an ereader. It goes with me on road trips these days.

I definitely played with them and had a number of them over the years, but this is the first time I'm learning that they had a proper name. I can't recall what I called them but I never knew they were called Magic Slate. I learned something today!!!

These look vaguely familiar but I really don't remember if I ever played with one or not. Could be getting them mixed up with something else!

I don't remember the name, but I do remember having one that had a man with metal shavings and a magnet. I remember you gave the man a beard and/or mustache with the magnet. Strange how easily occupied I used to be. :)

Def had those and the thing with the bald guy with magnetic shavings you could move around to give him hair or a beard. Our kids would also have had magic slates, our grandkids would not have been amused
Had that also, Ron. Can you imagine all the warning labels that would be on that today.... Don't eat the metal shavings, etc.

Me too. It’s called Wooly Willy and is still
available.

I definitely had multiple magic slates, along with etch-a-sketch and Wolly Willy. Wonder if any of them are still around in an attic or basement somewhere?
