Today is National Sports Day so let’s take the time to discuss our athletic selves. We take so much time talking about our kids or others we know playing sports, but rarely do we talk about what we do/did and our achievements. Today, is the day we put us first and if you have any sporting achievements to brag about, this is your time to brag. So tell us today…..

What sports do you play or did you play?
(multiple choice)

*Additional questions that you will need to post your answers….
Do you play today?
When did you play?
Did you have a Letterman Jacket?
Did you break any records when you played?

For Me…..I ran two half marathons in 2013, so I’ll give myself a shout out for that - very exciting for me. I also played basketball and volleyball when I was in middle school, but that’s it. I would have loved to play more, but it wasn’t encouraged when I was a kid. I played a lot of baseball with my guy friends for fun, but that’s doesn’t count. I think I had so much fun being one of DD22’s softball coaches, because I wanted to play softball so bad as a kid - I think I would have been really good at it.

Nope, no sports here, not for me, DH, or DD. My family just wasn't sports-oriented, and DH was in the band in junior high and high school. DD spent about 4 hours a day in the dance studio, so no time for anything else!!

Things were very different in the 1960s and 70s than they are today. Unless you were on a school team, there wasn't a lot of opportunity to participate in sports. My schools had intramurals, which meant you stayed after school one day a week (or maybe two) to practice and play with others in the program, and the sports changed with the seasons. However, there were no scrimmages or games with other schools, and certainly no travel teams or anything remotely related. Non-team sports were something done for fun, not like it is today. I think this attitude changed as families changed from single-earner to both parents having to be at work all day. There needed to be something for kids to do as they aged out of day care, and having to be at practice several afternoons a week, having a weekly game against another school, etc., was a reasonable substitution for child care as kids got into middle and junior high schools. Just my opinion, of course, but there's been a definite shift in attitude towards school sports since the early 1970s.

As a kid, I played basketball, baseball and swimming.

In HS, I played baseball and basketball my freshman year, then dropped baseball and switched from basketball over to swimming. I lettered in swimming for three years, then picked up tennis as a senior in HS, because a couple of us were bored Seniors and the team needed players.

As an adult, I’ve played some softball and now play pickleball.

I only was on bowling leagues from about 8-14.
There weren't a lot of sports available for girls to play at my high school and the ones they had, I wasn't interested in.

Both kids played in a lot. DD a lot of them

I never participated in team sports when I was in school. There wasn't much of an opportunity to participate in those days. The only team sport that I can say I participated in was a bowling league. It was a lot of fun, but I had to quit when I went back into the work force when the kids got older.

I have done a lot of individual sports, though. I've run two half-marathons, one of them was the Disney half marathon.
and I've run in many 5k's and 10k's.

Other sports:
biking
tennis
badminton
water skiing
snow skiing
archery
swimming

I played basketball in jr/sr high school and slow-pitch for years in my farm town community league; everybody did. As an adult over the years I’ve tried various racquet sports, paddling, golf and bowling purely for fun and to go along - I’m not athletic and I’ve never had a serious interest in any of it. I do love watching the majors though - we’re avid basketball fans and we’re really into the baseball pennant race right now. popcorn::

I was in Little League baseball for a year (before they started offering softball for girls) - third grade. I took tennis lessons and took YMCA basketball through middle school.

But I never played on any HS teams - I was pretty firmly entrenched in marching band and music and was, frankly, too scared to actually try out for a ball team. I guess it's a regret. I was pretty good at baskeball.

Little League and street/alley ball as a kid. Basketball in high school. A little drag racing late teens/early 20's. League bowling in my 20's.

I took tennis lessons as a kid and still enjoy playing. Not sure why I didn’t play in HS. In HS school I was on the swim team and a goalie for the soccer team.
After HS I worked as a lifeguard at the YMCA giving swimming lessons and helping coach the swim team. I also became a lifeguard at my local beach until my son was born.

Part of my mother's degree involves athletic training. She swam competitively into college and also played field hockey. When she retired, she was teaching classroom science, but she spent much of her life teaching PE and health. She even coached several school teams...even stepping in as a middle school football coach when needed. My brother is athletic...played baseball and tennis...even walking on to his university's tennis team (although pretty far down the roster). My husband was a multi-sport athlete, even playing high school football with an NFL hall of famer. My kids tried several sports early on but softball is what stuck for them. BUT ME...

I don't consider myself an athlete. I liked field hockey but the running triggered asthmatic tendencies. My mom enrolled me in rec softball, but my happiest times were sitting in the dugout and cheering on my friends. She also had me swimming from pre-school age. She pushed hard for me to make the Ys swim team but I never had the upper body strength to swim a full lap of butterfly, my racing dives left a lot to be desired, and my turns were horrific. Still, I was a strong enough swimmer from it all to pass all kinds of lifesaving stuff and handle rough ocean conditions. I have done a number of races, including three half marathons...but I walk or do intervals and don't really appreciate the whole vibe. Sure, I still put in around 5-10 miles each day, but it's just for exercise and doesn't make me feel like an athlete. In the end, my mom eventually realized that I'm a theater kid. She let me start dance around the age of 7 and when swimming fell apart, she really let me lean more into my dance side for physical activity.

I did not do sports it was probably a good thing I’m not that coordinated and it was never encouraged in my family I think it’s cause my father probably couldn’t afford it
I’m not what you would call athletic to begin with it’s not that I’m out of shape again not a coordinated person I’ll owe it 🤣🤣 matter fact no one in my family did sports and neither did my kids not that I didn’t encourage it they could’ve done it if they wanted to they just never did

1 yr. of little league baseball, several years playing ice hockey league in my 20s, have skied and played golf for many years, but gave up the skiing a few years ago.

I figured skated from the time I was 5 through college, so many many years. Still have a love for the sport to this day. I also played on the women's ice hockey club team in college. It was a way to get more time on the ice (a place I loved).

🏀 The only organized sport I played was intramural basketball in college. (Oh, and a dart league in the 90s if you count that.)

Recreationally, I've enjoyed tennis and golf, but never played either seriously.

My current exercise is mostly walking and yoga.

No sports here, I played netball briefly as a kid but I don't count that as it didn’t last long.

I'm not particular sporty and certainly not athletic, but I like to stay active. Mostly through walking and the odd run, but rarely through sports. The only sports I play are the fun ones (bowling, crazy golf, social darts).

Little League softball grades 2 thru 6, then junior high and HS teams. I received varsity letters in junior and senior years. Intramural softball in college.

I was on the HS field hockey team for two years but gave it up.

Recreational tennis for many years from HS to just a few years ago. My knees couldn’t handle it anymore. I never got into pickle ball.

I also like ice skating and roller blading.

As a kid we made up many types of games in the street, alleys, backyards, etc. Wall ball, wire ball, ball hockey, etc.
