We're a Filipino family and you can't be a Filipino family without roasting a pig at large family gatherings. It has been a few years since our last roast. My BIL, who is 100% Igorot, does the roasting.

I have been to several but have never hosted one. The ones I attended were all many years ago. My (small, Catholic) high school used to do one every year for homecoming.

At one, the whole pig was on display, complete with the apple in its mouth and… I dunno. That grossed me out. I am not a vegetarian and I know where meat comes from, but that was a little TOO “farm to table” for me, I think. (I don’t want to see the face of my meat!) At the high school, they had a big tent over the roasting pit and brought the meat out on platters. I never had to see the pig.

If I went to another one, I’d probably just eat the sides.
When in Spain, we ate in a restaurant that had a "pig with an apple in its mouth" window display...gross! I do eat pork, but that is a sight I do not ever want to see again!

I've been to a pig roast. Many years ago. I just felt nauseated by the whole pig turning around, and sorry for it, too. This makes me a hypocrite, because I love pork. I love all kinds of meat, I just don't want t6o be confronted with the death of the animal. I'm really a massive hypocrite.

I've never been to a pig roast. Only saw one on vacation in Hawaii.

The only other thing close to roast pig around here :scratchin is that certain restaurants in Chinatown roast duck, pig and pork and place them in the front window area, under heat lamps. The butcher is there behind the window to cut the meats. Usually the whole duck is on display, head and body. But when one orders the butcher to cut it up either a half or whole duck, the first thing he does is lop off the head & neck and tosses them away. So we never get them in the food container.

The roast pig, only a section the size of a rack of ribs is all I've ever seen hanging up. Roast pig is different than roast pork. Roast pork is just the tenderloin(?) or some part of the meat off the bones. It is marinated and slathered with the bright reddish-pink color that you see in pork fried rice and spare ribs.

Whereas, with roast pig, the skin is brown and roasted extra crispy and crunchy. It is the best part, in my opinion. The meat tends to be on the dry side and not as flavorful. So, I've only had it a few times.

Me too. I don't want to eat meat resembling the live animal it once was.

I know Native Americans used to say a prayer to the buffalo they just killed, honoring and thanking it for feeding and nourishing them so they could continue living. I kind of don't want to think about the animal that was part of the food chain for me. Selfish, I know.

When I've had steamed sea bass with ginger, scallions and a garlic infused soy sauce, it's fantastic. But, I don't like when they serve me the whole fish, complete with head, tail, and an eye ball. I have to turn the head away, so it's not staring at me before I devour it. :crazy2:

I've had the kalua pork (cooked in the ground) several times in Hawaii and also a friend did one at his house for a luau-themed party, but I can't ever remember eating pork from a whole pig cooked on a spit. It's probably delicious that way. The kalua method sure does taste good.

Growing up, our neighbor had an annual pig roast. It was...macabre? Is that the word.

He would pick up the pig the day before, put it on a thing in the front yard and let the "juices" run into the street overnight. Then it would go on the roaster for a looooooooooooooong time before the party started. If I recall, it was at least a day and a half? Then everyone would serve themselves from the pig once done. I was a kid and thought it was odd but cool. They would rent slot machines and I could play them in the basement.

Now...ew.

Never been to one. New neighbor suggested a few years ago that we do that for the annual block party. I usually coordinate that event and agreed that was a good idea and put him in charge of the pig. We still eat chicken every year.

Unless you are having a party for a LARGE number of people, doesn't seem practical to do at home. You likely would need to hire someone that knows how to do this and seems like there would be extensive prep involved. It is WAY more involved than just doing some sort of barbeque. Can't recall ever attending a pig roast at any of our relatives when growing up. Probably makes sense for a large restaurant and/or commercial kitchen to do this since they serve a lot more people and likely have all of the necessary equipment.

My DD24 has been a vegetarian since she was a baby. I think I scarred her for life bringing her to a luau in Hawaii. She was so grossed out by the roast pork in the pit.
