I’ve been up since 1:30am today so I could drop my DD21 off at the airport - she’s taking her first trip alone. I’m not gonna lie - it makes me nervous. I really shouldn’t be though, she’s so smart and has such a good head on her shoulders. She’s already called me to let me know she’s at her gate and everything went smooth for her to get there, so that’s good. Dropping her off this morning is what inspired this poll today. Until today, I haven’t been to O’Hare airport in 30 years, literally. We always fly out of Midway airport. Also until today, I have never dropped anyone off at the airport. So I started wondering how many of you drop off and/or pick someone up at the airport. Drop off your answer today…..

Have you dropped someone off at the airport?
Have you picked someone up at the airport?
If yes to either……how long ago?
(multiple choice)

For Me…….As I mentioned above, this morning was the first time I’ve dropped someone off at the airport, but my DH and I have picked up a friend at the airport a long time ago - like 28 years ago (we were married, but had no kids which is how I remember it being 28 years ago). Everyone I know either parks at the airport or takes a ride service to the airport. When our girls were little we always took a limo to the airport - it was fun! I will be picking up DD21 next Monday.

I used to drop people off and have them drop me off.

It's actually a lot easier to get the Airport shuttle in a lot of cases IMO - I wish I had tried that years ago.

Its a much more pleasant experience and those bus drivers do this route all day every day - so they know how to get through the traffic.

Back in the olden days when you could go to the gate and have a drink with folks before their flight - that was a different story.

The only expectation would be someone who needs assistance - the buses are not set up for that.
So for example my mother needed a wheelchair the last few times I dropped them - bus would not work for them.
Im guessing they have some sort of alternative - but I did not even consider it.

Sure, I've dropped off/picked up family and friends at times at the airport. We're a couple hours from the major airports, and the cost of a car/driver and the cost of parking at the airport is crazy, so we'll handle the transportation when possible.

Yes I have dropped off and picked up family members many times over the years; the last time was with my youngest DS when he was flying to his Air Force base in Oklahoma.

I have been dropped off and dropped orders off in the past but not in years. Since I moved back home i haven't as our local airport is 15 minutes away and has free parking.

DH is leaving for a business trip tomorrow and is taking himself to the airport.

Dropped off and picked up at the airport (always O'Hare) (more pickups) but many years ago. None in recent years.

@slo, how was the drop-off experience, pretty quick and easy? Wishing Katie a great trip. She'll be fine, mom.'s

I have dropped and picked up a couple times but the last time there was an incident driving home that was a bit dangerous for me and that made it the last time - it was not a driving situation it was more of a might be attacked situation because the area you have to drive through is not safe area to be in and I said never again in a car full of people pull up next to you and pull out a gun is not a safe thing
So these days I will not do it most people I know do not park at the airport they usually try to get someone to give them a ride or they call a rideshare the last time I had to go I called a rideshare because I’m usually going at the crack of chicken and I’m usually coming home after midnight and I don’t wanna ask somebody to drop me off or pick me up that early or that late when I know they have to go to work so I just use a rideshare
With that being said I live about 25 minutes from the airport my last rideshare took an hour and a half to get me home from the airport we got to tour the whole city the outskirts of the city I literally thought the man was kidnapping me my goodness gracious I was like where in the heck are you going I don’t think the man had a clue and he had his GPS on and I’m just like what are you doing I literally finally said get on this highway go this way or I’m calling the police because honestly I don’t think he had a clue what he was doing and he’s like I do this all time Well I don’t know what you’re doing but driving me home is not It

I do it all the time and friends do it for me. It's better than leaving a car there and paying high parking prices. I also prefer a car be parked at my house when I am away or the place would look abandoned. It's not a big deal here at all, though I bet it can be at some airports.

"You have to do anything I ever ask until the end of time." - That's the second half of the joke.

Yeah, I've picked up and dropped off plenty. Can't remember the exact last time I did it though. I've also been dropped off and been picked up. But, often our flights are super early in the morning or come in very late at night, so we more frequently use a park and ride service.

I've gone to airports to plane watch or watch an air show, but I've never been inside an airport myself. I've never dropped anyone off or picked anyone up from the airport myself.

I regularly bring people to and pick them up from the airport.

Growing up I lived 2 miles from the airport in the town it was in and people regularly left their cars at our house.

I work in the next town over and often pick up/drop off remote employees and people from our Atlanta campus.

I also dropped off and picked up 2 different friends in the last 30 days.

We drop off and pick up at our local airport (BGR). It's less than a 15 minute drive and it seems silly to pay for parking so close to home. We do this pretty regularly with one set of friends, and they reciprocate. Sometimes if the flight is stupidly early (like needing to be at the airport by 4:30am) we'll park in a pre-determined location and then they'll come get our car later in the day and then pick us up at the end of the trip (and vice versa) to avoid paying for long-term parking.

If people fly in and out of Portland... sometimes we do the shuffle and provide transportation. Lately DH and I have been renting vehicles one-way (BGR-PWM or PWM-BGR) on either end of our trip; it's been cheaper than paying for parking, and keeps the miles off our vehicles. There is bus service to Portland, but the bus station isn't near the airport so requires a cab/uber to get there. Not another hurdle I am willing to jump when I am on a time-schedule.

Boston is another story. There is direct bus service from Bangor to Boston, but it's a 4+ hour trip. Sometimes I drive down either day of or the day before, depending on the flight time. I can stay overnight at my sister's (which is about an hour's drive from Logan) so I get a visit out of the trip, too. Sometimes I'll put the traveler on a bus to Logan from Portsmouth, or sometimes just take them to the airport. I grew up in the Boston area, so driving in the city doesn't really bother me too much.

Countless times of both picking up and dropping off. We’ve got company coming in on Friday so we’ll be heading that way again. Our airport is about 10km outside the city and it’s a 45 minute drive, no matter what route you take. We ourselves have used airport park-and-ride lots in the past but not for 10 years since DS got his license. He’s our shuttle driver now. :goodvibes

I work in the D.C. area now with three airports to choose from, but family seldom visits so don't have to do this pick up and drop off very often. Two of the airports, Reagan and Dulles are serviced by Metro, so little need for this unless it is early morning before the Metro starts running. There is also a train from Union Station to Baltimore for the airport there.

Can you take luggage on the Metro?

Of course I have, less than 10 miles from Newark airport, but now with uber and 5 young adult children in the area, nit much anymore (H is driving ds22 tomorrow morning). The kids friends’ also take each other. He’s company pays for Ubers, sl no need when he’s traveling for work. Two of my daughters flew to Italy alone at 20, my oldest has been flying alone since 11. All of them love to travel and fly several times a year (one at least once a month). I don’t know anyone who parks there, drop off and pick up do not require parking.
