If you lose power, all that extra stuff in your refrig/freezer could spoil if you don't have some sort of backup generator if you happen to lose power.
Yep. Our BIL, who had just sold us a side of beef, loaned us a generator when we lost power for a week. It saved our fridge and freezer. Afterwards, we bought our own generator and use it every fall for blowing leaves (electric blowers) just to make sure the gas cycles through it. We also keep a big stack of wood for the fireplaces too.

My biggest worry when snow/ice is headed our way is laundry. I want all of it caught up before the first flake falls.

I ran to Aldi tonight to get some French Fried Onions for a recipe tomorrow night (I thought I had some) and this is the bread section ⬇️

I asked the employee if all the groceries sold out was due to the snow coming and the girl said the store has been insanely busy all day. We’re honestly going to get more rain than snow. Thank goodness they still had my French fried onions - those apparently aren’t in high demand for snow storms - LOL!

I was in 5th grade that year. We were in school until June 23 thanks to all of the snow days!
Way way back, one would listen to Kyw 1060 to hear school closings. Zillion of numbers. I don't remember the year, but it seemed it was almost every week. One day as a joke, the station said If it snows again, just assume your school is closed. QUICKLY , then saying No we are happy to provide this service.

I don’t have a regular dinner in for us for tonight. I’m going out now before the big rain storm kicks in.

We generally get lots of warning before storms, but I’m well stocked. Full freezers and pantries. I learned some good tips during the pandemic lockdown. I now flash freeze certain items - mushrooms, red peppers, onions. It’s easy and I have the time. When making stir fries I can just grab a handful of each. I also have frozen mixed vegetables and fruit in the freezer in case we run out of fresh. We occasionally freeze milk but use it quickly. We’re older so avoid driving in bad conditions so this gives us peace of mind. We live in the Canadian prairies. I’ve read a fun fact about storm shopping in the Maritimes. People who shop before a storm buy “storm chips”. Can’t run out of those. 😁

I live in a hurricane-prone area. The rule they always remind us of right before a storm hits is "enough food and water to survive 72 hours on your own." After that, most of the time power is back on. A couple of years ago, when the main transmission tower fell in the river and the entire city was out of power for two weeks, Red Cross and FEMA were here right at the 72 hour mark passing out rations and bottled water. So we always try to have at least 3 days of nonperishable food and water on hand. Occasionally we'll pick up a few things right before a storm hits, but it's generally not necessary.

The only major storm we have ever had in So Cal was the recent hurricane. I believe it was a TS before it hit shore - kindof a dud where we are. We got stuck in OR when SWA repositioned their planes in advance of the storm so we missed the real nonsense, but we saw all the reports of the hoarding people were doing - WTH? Glad we were not part of it. FWIW - our rescheduled plane landed at LGB, on time, ahead of the storm. It was pretty entertaining watching the news crews trying to find evidence of destruction - there wasn't any. Then they got re-routed because of the small earthquake - that was really funny!

I always try to stay prepared. My area is more prone to tropical storms and an occasional hurricane.
But you never know what may happen ( cough pandemic lol). So I would rather be prepared and not need it, then need it and not have.

Big wind storm here; no power since 2pm yesterday. Still "assessing". I got home from a big grocery haul to find my garage door not opening. Fortunately the generator is doing its thing and keeping on the furnace, fridge, water heater and basement freezer. And a couple plugs to use for the coffee maker and cell charger! But it's not the type of storm where I couldn't get out or anything. Nice to have it either way.

I blame this thread for us losing power ;) :p (not really)

Strong winds last night knocked over some trees and blew out a transformer - one minute, I'm getting ready to start cooking, next minute complete black. Outside our window, you could see flashes of light - must have been the transformer blowing up.

Power was out the rest of the night and still out this morning. Estimates from the power company started at restoration at 11pm last night (didn't happen) to 11am today and then 11pm tonight. At that point, we started looking for hotel rooms. Fortunately, as I was on the way into my office (showered at our gym this morning), my older son called and said the power was back on. We never opened our fridge or freezer, so everything should still be good, I hope.
